And leaving out Budgie or Deep Purple is tough ... IYKYK Andy talks about a lot of newer groups, and I'd definitely have to put Prong, Static-X, White Zombie, Pantera and Vision of Disorder in a newer (90s+) list and they're inventive as hell - you can even dance to a good amount of it.

The Sweet - “Sweet Fanny Addams” (RCA, 1974). Most of the stuff in this top ten are a bit late to be regarded as “most influential” in my book and I’m 57. I’d point you towards “Sweet Fanny Addams” (US version of “Desolation Boulevard”) by THE SWEET. Along with their B-Sides many of the NWOBHM and Punk bands grew up listening to this album, which contains one of the first thrash metal tracks, “Set Me Free”, which has been covered many times, including by Saxon, who murdered it. There are about five tracks on “Sweet FA” including the title track that are easily ten years ahead of their time and I have turned many metal heads and punks on to them and NONE of them could believe who it was when I first played it to them. Straight up. These guys were able to play Judas Priest into the ground and they make Motörhead and Black Sabbath, much though I like them, sound like tortoises. I bought a Judas Priest live album a month ago and at least two of the guitar solos were straight from Andy Scott (who for my money is the king of the whammy bar) plus “You Got Another Thing Coming” is “Rock ‘N’ Roll Disgrace”. Early Iron Maiden guitar solos are also Andy Scott rip-offs. Gene Simmons admitted that Kiss would not have existed without The Sweet. Queen ripped them off too but never admitted it. Sweet also had an enormous influence on Scandinavian and German metal. Blackmore joined them onstage in the US, Dio badly wanted to join them after Brian Connolly quit in 1978. Graham Bonnet also auditioned for them just before he got the gig with Rainbow. Check this album out if you haven’t already because you’ve missed out. It’s an album which to my mind is a damn sight more relevant to the development of metal as a genre than some of the stuff you’ve got here. Sabbath are doomy hard rock in my book, and I will never consider them as a metal band. Closest they got to being a metal band was with Dio. Musically, Sweet weren’t far off Deep Purple, and are all over most of these bands. Dave Lee Roth has an awful voice and sings like Foghorn Leghorn, by the way. I was pleasantly surprised you had “Slade Alive!” as your #1 live album but that you’d only heard it a couple of weeks before, whereas I bought it when I was 11 years old, knew for years that it was a classic, and I’m the same age as you. If you haven’t heard “Sweet Fanny Addams” yet this album will probably have a similar impact on you. You have to hear it.

I say saw, we were 14 and my mates Dad was entertainments manager. We could watch from the side of stage but we got a rollicking if we went in any public areas. We also had a fantastic local grind-core band called Doctor & the Crippens who did a few Peel Sessions and ep's. They were probably my favourite grind band. The singer wore a huge paper-mache head, sang through a mega-phone and threw burning cabbages into the crowd. They were great but their gigs literally stank.

I am a big fan of Judas Priest but I felt that German band Accept wiped the floor with them as support on the 1981 tour. ‘Breaker’ & ‘Restless & Wild’ would be on my list.

Always a matter of taste but objectively I’d go for the following Top 10 essential Metal Albums… A Vulgar Display Of Power / Pantera Reign In Blood / Slayer Portrait Of An American Family / Marilyn Manson Operation: Mindcrime / Queensrÿche From Enslavement To Obliteration / Napalm Death Master Of Puppets / Metallica Superunknown / Soundgarden British Steel / Judas Priest Number Of The Beast / Iron Maiden Vol. 4 / Black Sabbath

Andy, a couple of questions for you: 1. Why do you never mention Ronnie Dio? Is it the whole 'big voice, tiny man' situation? Or is it personal, ‘ can’t call it Black Sabbath without Osbourne’? Feels like there’s a juicy story here. 2. Do you honestly think Praxis deserves a nod over Highway to Hell, anything by Deep Purple, or Led Zeppelin II? Really? Also, doesn’t the fact that “progressive” metal alienating 80% of listeners, disqualify Praxis?

Deep Purple's In Rock is definitely needed on any such list

Well, I'm not much of a heavy metal fan but I would have included Deep Purple in Rock.

Enjoyed that Andy. Sabbath had to be number one and it had to be Paranoid. I would agree with Master of Puppets also. At least I have five of the albums on your list 👍👍

Yeah, fantastic! On a more serious note, any chance of a break? Waffling on ad infinitum in the frenetic style. An intermission maybe. Thanks and big love!

Are any of the Brits into Electro-Industrial , Harsh EBM, Aggrotech, Terror EBM , Darkwave or Industrial Metal? How about Front Line Assembly, Suicide Commando , Velvet Acid Christ, X-Marks The Pedwalk, Combichrist, Dance or Die , Project Pitchfork or In Strict Confidence? These bands are more German based I suppose.

I love metal so I was looking forward to this. Surprised you didn't bring up Cynic or Death especially because of how jazzy Sean Reinert was. The intro of Flattening of Emotions changed everything in metal and led the way tech/prog metal. Pantera to me is funky as hell, Phil influenced so much of the singing after that as much as they may not like to admit it. Dime was perfection. 80s thrash (for me) was peak metal and my goto thrash album is Kill Em All but yeah Slayer was super important and yeah Charlie B was the shit. As a metal head, we all know that Painkiller is their most important, metal af album and is one of my fave drum albums. Even though Kill Em All is my fave, Master of Puppets is the quintessential metal album. Some of my subjective faves are Catch 33 by Meshuggah, Deliverance/Damnation by Opeth, City and Alien by Strapping Young Lad, Leviathan by Mastodon, Chaos AD by Sepultura but we all know that the greatest metal band is Dethklok. Would love to hear a conversation with you and Gene Hoglan, he shares a lot of influences and also has a love of soul/funk.

He’s probably never heard of Cynic or Death, I don’t think he knows much about metal apart from the “big” bands 😁 \m/

@craze77 I think he knows quite a lot. Maybe more on the British side. But it's hard to narrow it down to ten and very subjective of course.

Any fans of Sacrifist should also look into the band God, one of Justin Broadrick of Godflesh’s side projects with Kevin Martin (who he’d join up with in Techno Animal). More industrial but still dub-y with some jazz in there.
