Speaking as a millennial who grew up on Nirvana, Radiohead etc. I just can't see how Sgt. Pepper is one of the best albums ever. I understand that it was ground-breaking for the time, but as a collection of songs, it is not THAT strong, and there are definitely better albums by the band. It really is over-rated. And albums like Nevermind and Ok Computer completely blow it out of the water in terms of the song-writing.
@MrDubyadee1

Speaking as a Boomer I agree with you. Rubber Soul was better. A Space in Time (10 Years After) was better. A lot of albums were better unless you view music as a collection of interesting experiments. I don’t.
@richardhorrocks1460
@richardhorrocks1460 Жыл бұрын
@@MrDubyadee1 What's interesting to me is that they had Mystery Tour songs written at the same time, right? And if they'd put the best of those two albums into just one album then it truly would be one of the greatest albums of all-time. The fact that they didn't suggests that - at that period of time when the rules were being written - that the band saw music as a 'collection of interesting experiments'. Which is fair enough. The Beatles were on a journey and their albums were documents of that journey. But we can still be honest. I was disappointed by Sgt. Pepper. In fact, I was disappointed by most of their albums, which mostly seem kind of patchy. BUT, they still have the best catalogue of individual songs in popular music history.

I can understand your viewpoint, but the grounbreaking aspect as this guy mentions ( I don't know his name) is the clincher here. It is great because of the moment in time it represents. There was nothing like it before and there really has been nothing like it since. That's really tough to do in rock and roll. The same could be said of Pet Sounds.

I was 19 when Nevermind came out and I bought it and I liked it but it was never my favourite. Now I can't understand why it's so valued for so many people. It changed the musical preferences of many people and it helped others to be more visible like Pixies, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, etc but this kind of impact was even bigger with Nevermind the bollocks (Sex Pistols) wich is a better album to me. And regarding quality, there are many records much better (Pink Floyd, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Kinks, Rolling Stones, etc, etc)
@richardhorrocks1460
@richardhorrocks1460 Жыл бұрын
@@josemiguelcarrizo7373 It always comes down to personal preference, I guess. I think the additional factor with Nirvana is the emotional connection that certain fans felt with Kurt. If you were a weirdo and an outsider then he just somehow meant so much to you. And there's no way to explain that, and no way to separate that from your enjoyment of the music. Maybe if I didn't have that emotional connection then I'd view them differently. But I do lol. And I wouldn't change that for the world. They did something to me that no other band has. But if you were well-adjusted and had parents that loved you then maybe they are less appealing :D

Way better than I thought when it was played non-stop on my FM radio. Our presenter is wearing a Led Zeppelin T for God sake. He seems pretty stuck in the 60s for the most part but with exception of the Velvet Underground which I recently listened to and found wanting, (the solo Lou Reed stands up better)these are great choices.

I love your #1, #9 & #10 but the rest, while I don't dislike most of them, are too expected and for my taste, too in line with rockist conformity. I'd replace the other 7 by Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust' (1972), The Sex Pistols' 'Bollocks' (1977), Sly Stone's 'Riot' (1971), Os Mutantes' 'Mutantes' (1969), Jacques Brel's 'Ces gens-là' (1966), Kraftwerk's 'Man Machine' (1978) and Pixies' 'Doolittle' (1989). Different strokes for different folks! Kudos to you especially for your #9 & #10... though I _may_ just substitute 'Fried' for the same year's 'World Shut Your Mouth'!

So many great albums in music history picking a top ten is mind bendingly difficult. Dark Side Of The Moon is in my opinion the most perfect album ever conceived. You're right, no surprises. However, in defence of the list, I think if one is going to make up list best of ranked type of list, the guiding rule should always be that of Hamlet, Act 1 Scene 3 (my edit at ellipsis) Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar. Those friends thou hast, and their adoption tried, Grapple them to thy soul with hoops of steel, But do not dull thy palm with entertainment Of each new-hatched, unfledged comrade. Beware Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in, Bear't that the opposèd may beware of thee Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice. Take each man's censure, but reserve thy judgment... This above all - to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.

It's funny how people mention SURF'S UP before SUNFLOWER. I think the 1970 album has an incredible range of songs, and is one of the best engineered album of the decade. Other than "Tears in the Morning," I feel every song is brilliant, whereas SURF'S UP has a few "slighter" songs. Although I absolutely agree with PET SOUNDS being on this list, if it didn't have "Sloop John B" on it and the two instrumentals had been backing tracks for vocal songs, I think it would be #1 before everything else.

Like any list of favorite anythings, one should define some criteria employed to create the list. My top ten album list would be based on 1. longevity: how many times I have listened to it and continue to enjoy it. 2. How many tracks are entertaining; All of my top album picks would play well from end to end. Given that and understanding that a million people would yield a million different lists, here is mine: 1. Soundgarden - Superunknown 2. Ten Minute Warning - self titled 3. The Doors - first album 4. And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - Source Codes And Tags 5. Failure - Fantastic Planet 6. Esthero - Breath From Another 7. Led Zeppelin - 4th. album (Zoso?) 8. Face To Face - Ignorance Is Bliss 9. Eleventh Dream Day - Lived To Tell 10. New York Dolls - first album. I could no doubt come up with 3 or 4 more "lists of ten" that I would feel comfortable interchanging with this list. What's your criteria?

To me sgt peppers and pet sounds defined album music in the pop space. Yes the Beatles and brian wilson weren't doing anything weve not seen before as many musicians used backing bands and concept's. I feel however both album's consistently carry their ideas and sonic work through out and both being pop albums they never forgot the beat that kids at the time loved exposing to them new styles of music escpaing the constant songs of hot rods and women.

I always feel that what makes a 'great' album is that it stands above time. And album that transcends its time and genre. An example would be The Beatles' 'Revolver'. Listening to it today seems to defy the fact that it was made in 1966. Other examples would be, Dylan's 'Blood on the Tracks, Joni Mitchell's, 'Blue', Pink Floyd's, 'Dark Side Of The Moon'.

No real surprises, here. Every album on this list is a well-recognized, stone-cold, classic. Going further off the radar, my first choice to add would be "Tago Mago", the 1971 Krautrock classic from Germany's astoundingly original band "Can". Of all the thousands of albums I've listened to at this point of my age of 62 years, no other has shown me such a shockingly original soundscape of possibilities. Another I would add that really shook my music world would be Radiohead's 2000 masterpiece "Kid A".

I would not be qualified to suggest any "Greatest Album's". I find it interesting that most are OLD. {What does that tell us?} Funny how the Velvet Underground 'Bananna Album' alway's crop's up. I bought it, didn't like it and never formed a band ! {I found the 'Mother's' much more interesting around that period. } Neil Young's first 2 album's much better than the Commercial Harvest. The Great Society much better than early Jefferson Airplane. {Who RUINED, White Rabbit.} I would suggest, MY FAVOURITE 10 ALBUM'S rather than Best or GREATEST & I'd need a Hundred not Ten. I'd have at least 10 album's by the Stone's.... NONE by the Beatles although I did buy most of them upon release... Found them too "POP" and got bored with them quite quickly. {Unlike the Stone's, which I still listen to regularly, including ALL their early one's, I didn't buy when released!} >>> I feel extreamly lucky to have lived through the sixty's music revolution. Been able to see band's in small venue's. The Who, Pink Floyde, Pretty Thing's, Ike & Tina Turner, Geno Washington, and hundred's of other's. YES, I did write 100's . Seeing 2 or 3 every weekend wasn't uncommon.

Another great list, it’s really hard to make a list like this. I feel like Traffic never gets it’s due in regards to influence and importance. Their debut , Mr. Fantasy or John Barleycorn Must Die, really presented a unique sound with lyrical subjects that were anything but pop. Certainly they influenced artists like Billy Joel, Dave Matthews and the Grateful Dead.

Great list, really enjoy your reviews. Obviously the Beatles could easily occupy 4 or 5 of the top ten alone with their albums from Rubber Soul to Abbey Road. Floyd could have had at least 4 with their run from Dark Side of the Moon to The Wall. Personally I also love The Final Cut and Roger Waters’ Amused to Death is as good as any Floyd album. You could also choose maybe 4 or 5 Zeppelin albums, 3 or 4 Doors albums, maybe 4 Bowie albums, 3 Steely Dan albums, 3 by the Who (Tommy to Quadrophenia), 3 or 4 by the Stones (from their 1968 to 1972 period). Anyway my choice after all that (not in order): The Beatles (White Album) Animals (Pink Floyd) Amused to Death (Roger Waters) Ram (Paul & Linda McCartney) Astral Weeks (Van Morrison) Forever Changes (Love) The Velvet Underground & Nico Abbey Road (The Beatles) Physical Graffiti (Led Zeppelin) Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)

All worthy choices. I find it hard to decide what is a rock album at all ? If we are not just picking from the rock genre then there are many more albums that should be in the top ten. Perhaps that is why these top rens are always done best when it is people voting for their own favourites. I was going to start naming some albums that I thought should be in a top ten but quickly decided that I could not make my mind up. I think could easily go to 25 of the best but deciding the order is impossible.

Great list! I love all of those! Let it Bleed and Pet Sounds are a lock in my Top Ten, but I’d probably trade Dark Side off for its 90s equivalent OK Computer, and put Revolver in for Sgt Pepper. As for Crimson King, 21CS is one of the alltime great openers but the rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to it; I’d rather include something suggested by your tee shirt, say Led Zep 4.

I've got my own favourite list but if I were to do a "Greatest" list it would be a real challenge. Nice that you had 'Village Green' in there, that's well and truly in my top-10 favourites, it is just a special record. Hard to argue with 'Dark Side of the Moon' being top or thereabouts. 'Forever Changes' by Love is one that I couldn't leave out of a top-10 greatest because it just keeps picking up a new audience with every generation despite it being a cult stand alone album in many ways. But the more you think about these things the more records start knocking at the bottom of the top-10. A valiant effort. All the albums on your list are truly great, and your commentary was superb.

Yet again Barry, a superb and entertaining video.As stated in a previous comment below, important that you clarified that your choice was made by way of 'historical importance' as opposed to simply 'favourite' musically, hence for example 'Sgt Pepper' over 'Abbey Road ' / 'Let it Bleed' over 'Sticky Fingers' etc.With regards to 'Dark Side of the Moon' and its 'historical importance' , due to its production values I recall at the time of its release some audiophiles purchasing it in order to merely test that their latest Hi-Fi was set up for optimum performance.

I like Forever Changes by Love from 1968, the first few Roxy Music albums (they're a real eye-opener if you only know the smooth post-1978 stuff), Never Mind the Bollocks... and a few others. But if the house was burning down, my boxed sets of the complete works of Heinrich Schutz and J.S. Bach would be all I'd try to rescue. Everyone has great musical taste. I still pick "Tommy" as The Who's penultimate statement. Since I wrote this, Tawnie has corrected my stupidity, penultimate means second to last. Not my intent but it shows that even at 70 you can learn something. "Quadrophenia", "Tommy"; whatever. I think both "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" are better than "Sgt. Pepper's". They both impacted my life in ways that are beyond even my maudlin retrospection on my stupid life. Except I made it to 70 and I still get up in the morning and think perhaps there is a reason for all this.

For some reason, your list reminds me of a list created by a local music columnist. It was a list of a hypothetical 10 album record collection, one that would enable you to have at least one good record to play for any music fan who came to visit, regardless of their favorite genre. So you had to pick one pop record, one folk record, one country record, one hard rock record , etc. The challenge was selecting single records that could satisfy multiple genres. I remember he picked Live at Leeds for one of them because it would probably be well received by both hard rock fans and heavy metal fans. I think he picked a Patsy Cline hits collection because she might be OK with both country fans and easy listening fans. It’s a little bit of an exercise of putting yourself in a box, and then trying to work your way out.

Would be interesting to collate the commentary choices. It's a very "boomer" list almost a Rolling Stone collection with a twist of Anglo. What does "great" mean? That's a lot of decades with out any greatest's and very narrow in scope even if you exclude jazz which is probably fair enough in this context. Here's mine in no particular order: 1. Elvis Presley 2. Astral Weeks - Van Morrison 3. What's Going On - Marvin Gaye 4. The Queen is Dead - Smiths 5. The Stone Roses 6. St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles 7. It's really hard for me to make a top ten by off of the top of my head it would be these 1) Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon. I always loved this record but it took on a whole new meaning after my brother's suicide. When I listen to it I imagine his last moments with a soul in his body and the moments afterward. It's really moving. 2) Beach Boys Pet Sounds. I didn't really get into The Beach Boys until later in life even though as a kid who grew up just down the road from where they're from I knew every early hit but never bought a record. In the 80's I remember the dad of my friend telling me it was like the greatest album ever made. I took one look at the cover and passed. In the late 90's I was in a music store and saw it, remembered the cover. The only two songs I knew were Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows. I decided to give it a chance. After the first listen I felt like the whole album went over my head. I wasn't expecting that nor was I ready for it. I'm Waiting For The Day was the first song that really grabbed me. Caroline No was the second one that really drew me in. After listening under the influence of marijuana I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times memorized me. The the two instrumentals. Next thing you knew I was listening to it from beginning to end, almost in a trance. To this day it's my go-to album when I need to move my spirit. 3) So many candidates but I have to go with The Cars, debut album. To this day that albums takes me back to that time period like I'm almost there. It's the perfect soundtrack for the time away from disco. Moving in Stereo and All Mixed up just flow into each other so beautifully. 4) The Who, Who's Next. I discovered this album when I was 14 and became mesmerized by it. At the time the Walkman had just came out and I bought the cassette. I would spend hours listening to it over and over. 5) Queen, Sheer heart Attack. I became a queen fan during The News of the World era and loved their following albums and then went back looking for their early albums. It was when their first greatest hits album came out in '81 I believe that I was given a list of their works. I eventually found all of them at used record stores as most record stores at the time only carried current albums. I loved them all but Sheer heart Attack stood out. It really feels like Led Zeppilin meets the Beach Boys. Most underrated album of all time. 6) So many deserving Sabbath albums but I'm going with Paranoid. Just a great album, great production, Later Sabbath albums would have been so much better if they'd had a real producer. This was the first album I really got into and I believe that to this day it's their most coherent effort. 7) Deep Purple's machine Head. This was another album I discovered in the 80's when my dad brought it home from a yard sale along with Fireball and their early album with I'm So Glad, Hush, Hey Joe... Machine head just sounded so metal, so polished. Loved every song but especially Space Trucking and Maybe I'm a Leo. 8) Gotta have a Led Zeppelin album so I'm going with Led Zeppelin II. This is my personal, biased favorite. It was another record that I used to listen to on my walkman as I walked or rode my bike. Each song really sucked my in and made me feel I was living the record. Moby Dick became my favorite song to play on my guitar. 9) It's getting tough to narrow them down but I have to get Neil Young in here and I go with Rust Never Sleeps. I'm a huge fan of all of Neil's albums through the 90's. There was a point in my life where he was all I listened to. I love all the albums but this one is special to me because when I was listening to it and getting to know it I was enjoying a lot of success in life and this record reminds me of it. 10) Gonna go with something a bit obscure, Love's Forever Changes. The reason I put it here is because it's another album that I really loved that I knew note for note. At one time it was a record that I listened to nonstop for about 6 months. Honorable mentions without detail. Bonnie Raitt's debut album, Beach Boy's Love You, The Who Quadropenia, Moody Blues Days of Future Passed, Metallica Master of Puppets, Red Hot Chilli Peppers Blood Sex Sugar Magic, The Who Tommy, Def Leppard Hysteria, Van Halen's first four albums, The Byrd's Notorious Byrd Brothers, Beach Boys Wild Honey, Stevie Wonder Innervisions... I could go on and on. BTW, my list doesn't include my country and jazz favorites.

I attempted to assemble my "top 10 albums" list, and frankly speaking it happened to be "mission impossible" just to pick 10.

My 10 (no order) Zep IV, Blue, Sticky Fingers, Are You Experienced, Black Sabbath IV, Revolver, The Band, Yes Close to the Edge, Who’s Next, Dylan yes, I like Bringing it All Back Home. I just don’t get the Kinks. I do really like the Velvets but I can’t quite put them in my list. Honorable Mentions: Physical Graffiti, VH1, Aerosmith Rocks, Astral Weeks, Bold as Love, Sticky Fingers, Regatta de Blanc, Nevermind, Abbey Road, Paranoid etc etc etc!!!!!’ Joshua Tree too. I can't think of a record which is as loved and hated by so many fans as Meteora. I'm in the love camp, but for every me, there's someone in the hate camp
