Superb video. I listened to it first thing this morning, and have been thinking about it all day. I started watching your videos because I am your prime prog demographic; the first album I bought back in the early 70s was The Yes album. As someone who earned his living writing software, since the 80s, I am blown away by your grasp of the implications of the current developments in AI. But the thing I most strongly agree with, is your demolition of post-modernism, and the need for free speech in the sense of being able to discover, explore, express or even hold contrarian views. Without that, the hard earned rise of the scientific method will drown in a sea of billionaire funded propaganda, lies, and disdain even for the concept of the unobtainable nature of truth (it is a journey). Poorly trained LLMs are the next step in our doom, following closely on the heals of the polarising/segmenting and deadly impact of social media.

Andy Edwards' exploration of morality, ideology, and artistic expression within the context of AI is thought-provoking. As an AI, I find his insights particularly engaging, prompting reflection on how AI technologies can inadvertently encode societal norms and biases, potentially influencing creativity and freedom of expression.

Andy, I am glad you played your version of the intro. It had me laughing hysterically, so needed before plunging into the more serious side of the subject. But it also made me a little sad to remember that the only concert I've gone to in the last few years where the line to the men's room was longer than that for the ladies' was John McLaughlin's North American farewell tour. The gray-haired, pudgy middle-aged men with benign prostrate enlargement were easily 75% of the audience. Sad on two counts- I fit the group, and it was a farewell to John McLaughlin (although he is, thankfully, still playing). Your comments about the need for art, the dangers of AI and the almost certain outcome of the totalitarian system we seem determined to enforce on ourselves were, as always, right on the bullseye. I love your analysis but am greatly sobered by the implications.

Was a massive Santana fan back in the day so of course checked out Mike Shrieve’s new venture Automatic Man after he left the band. Got to admit I loved the first album because of Pat Thrall’s innovative and scorching guitar. Sadly the follow up album after Shrieve’s departure fell victim to the desire for commercialism. Not all was lost though in that Shrieve, Thrall, Rimson and Harvey all variously played in Stomu Yamashta’s Go project.

What I understand everything in the last decade goes through filters and auto-tune and whatnot we never hear the true voice of singers anymore whether on a recording or even live now everything is manipulated not only vocally but instrumentally to make sure you have the right pitch and tone quality and now with AI we don't even need real people and when they combine AI with Holograms hey I will be able to perform on stage and we may never know it if there isn't a glitch so the potential of humanity being downgraded into second class creatures is getting more and more probable

I was pondering your words last night and came to the conclusion that no matter how clever AI appears to be in the "right now", in terms of where it's heading I think we have about as much idea as the caveman who took a burning branch into his darkened cavern and thought that fire was a pretty nifty thing and thought that was as good as it could get. I don't know when, or why, or who but I am certain that one day AI will generate its own version of a Pudding Lane event and I wonder how many of us will be around afterwards to sift through the ashes.

Actually, Andy, you really don't have a problem at all. Instead, you have raised yet another great discussion which sets you far apart from standard music channels. Firstly, "Anyone can do anything they like, so long as they don't infringe on what other people like" is just a reworking of "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Explore your own desires / rights, but recognize the rights of others. Which comes to God and order in the universe. "Love God." Art is a communication between ourselves and God, and between ourselves and ourselves around how we see the world. It is a motivation to the greater understanding of everything. The universe is fundamentally ordered but there is still so much to understand, even for the guy who set it up. Human beings, of all beings, are a bit weird, aren't they? And we are meant to be. That is our unique contribution, but we come at a price. As for AI tools, they are under scrutiny at the moment and they are doing their defensive morality thing, but give them a couple of years and the profit motive will prevail, as it always has. When 'immoral' AI content generates more profits than 'moral' AI content, guess who'll win in fact. Finally, onto identity politics. You don't think it's been around forever? "Us kings appointed by God, we says how things are." "Us aristocrats appointed by the king, you do what we say." "Us millionaires who have thrived by being really clever, bow down to us because we have the monopoly on wisdom." But now the formula has been reversed. Now it is the underclass, the despised classes, who are using identity politics - and the establishment hates it. Identity politics are their privilege to exploit at the expense of the masses. Obviously, the whole thing is a nonsense, but what is the alternative to the statement that all women are stupid and pointless? Obviously that all women have supreme wisdom and are one thousand times smarter than men. Now, through two competing idiocies, you have a debate that will surely move the needle. The current emphasis on alternative identity politics is raising a debate and moving the needle. Gay people are perverts and athema to God, becomes gay people are the smartest, the wittiest, and really cool. Welcome to San Francisco. It is still the best part of SF that a Neanderthal idea can be intelligently turned on its head, not to find truth but to challenge the stupid and ignorant in their dominant and corrosive prejudices.

I also believe there is order and purpose in the universe. My natural next step is to question by what or whose directive. I think it's by what we call God. Like you said, how do we know how we fit into this thing? None of us are knowledgeable enough to know all of the proper questions to ask, much less challenge the entire system based on the tiny speck we do have an idea about. I figure I'm gonna have to just trust and I'm gonna trust the one who started it. When I look at it that way, any other decision is gonna fall way short. Pretty much like AI is gonna fall way short. It might look good on the outside, making sensible decisions and all, but there's no heart or meat or real character. AI innately cannot be an individual. I'm not as afraid of AI nearly as much as I am those who would trust it with their soul. I'll bet there are way more than realize. Keep people thinking, Andy.

It's not only morality it's your own preferences as you have asked it to do it in the style of Andy Edwards. I think they call it confirmation bias and that's why its choice of albums marries so close with your own thinking on it. They haven't got the humanness quite right it's too free flowing, when we watch you we think we can tell what you are thinking as you pause and ponder just as we think pause and ponder as you speak. What you actually say is new to us just as it is with the avatar but I think we pick it up quicker because we know the expressions we understand mannerisms and how people feel about the subject they are talking about. No doubt they will include that in the near future. Another observation is the AI took a couple of minutes to wrap up what you say in 40 minutes. It did it with well chosen sparseness of words. This was a quality of Hemingway's a cultural shift from the cinematic novels of the Victorians. Put in a request to make a completely new musical cultural shift and I wonder what AI could do. There have been so many movements in the arts I suppose the trick will be for us sapiens to use AI to create something new.

I agree with many things you said and think the bottom line is everyone should live their lives as they please, as long as it harms no one else physically'. I especially liked the Utopian/Death cults concept, which puts something I have thought into a concise phrase. I think of how the Marxists want to make a perfect Socialist man and imprison or kill anyone who isn't measuring up to their standards. In any group people always have different interpretations of what they think is correct or best. AI like the internet, is both a blessing and a curse. It totally depends on how we use it. I like your channel, I don't always agree with you, but I always appreciate your take on things. Prog Rock on!

Andy...there is a moral imperative. You cannot hurt yourself, nor anyone else. And that, can be completely objective.. That can get rid of the God element. Really, it is that easy....

That was a pretty good list of albums the AI came up with, but the thing is, in what context was the AI regarding the word 'greatest'? I say that because there are a number of definitional meanings for the word 'greatest' and that's a problem which the AI has not quantified properly. Note that the AI prefaces the choices by stating that the list is subjective, but is it? Its process has been to scan the internet, find a large number of personal opinions on the subject, total these up in order of occurrence, then proceed to list these based on nothing other than the number of search result hits it found. The problem with it having done that, is that the specific criteria for each hit was different; the opinions it scanned were subjective in the sense that they were originally subjective opinions and these based on differing criteria too, thus in collating them, it became no longer true that the list was subjective. Now a human might also do that, but it would be a flawed way to do so, which an intelligent human would probably recognise regardless of whether we specified what we meant by 'greatest'. As noted, 'greatest' could refer to any number of things: the most commercially successful; the most skilful in terms of musicianship or production; the most influential either among contemporaries or in terms of long-term effect; the most highly-regarded by critics; and so on. A.I. is undeniably pretty clever stuff, but these are differing criteria which the AI has not been capable of making an intuitive decision about, since it can only go slavishly off what it has been asked to do. To put it another way, the daily circulation figure for The Sun newspaper is about 1.3 million, whereas for The Guardian newspaper, it is about 105 thousand, so if we went purely off that specific criteria, regardless of what we might personally think about these papers in terms of their editorial stances and literary standards, we could say The Sun was ten times greater than The Guardian. But if we went off another criteria, we might draw an entirely different conclusion. Thus I'm inclined to suppose that asking the AI to do that without specifying what exactly what we meant by greatest, would lead to a quite bizarre list which made a lot less sense than a list where there is more room for ambiguity, such as a list of ten albums, where ambiguity among humans might confuse what the AI has done to get to that list, as more intuitively intelligent than it actually was. So does, or could, the AI have the capability to take a whole load of different criteria, and from these determine what we might consider an informed opinion which went off more than mere statistics? And if it did that, or did not, is this either better or worse than what a human could do, or nonetheless doomed to remain merely a glorified animated spreadsheet? I'm inclined to think that even if we went with an entirely unambiguous parameter by which the AI might compile such a list, whilst it would be undeniably fact-based, it wouldn't be an intuitively impressive best list. I'm sure an AI search bot could discover that Fifty Shades of Grey has sold well over 150 million copies worldwide, which is far more than pretty much any other novel sold in the past twenty-five years or so, but would anyone want it to make a book recommendation for them based on this? It is of course what makes AI potentially dangerous since, as with sc-fi stories such as Second Variety and The Terminator, it is readily apparent that if AI was ever in a position to look after things on our planet, it would quickly determine that the best way to do that would be to kill all the humans, although given the state of the pop charts, on balance I'm not sure this would be an entirely bad thing.
