This video is very good. The main point is that contemporary singer Tenors sound much different from a Classically trained singer. However, you can be a contemporary singer and have a high C. David phelps is a perfect example.

By the way I noticed there was a comment where you say that tenors use a "ahh note" due to their brightness in their voice. But Technically the voice should not be making Strong E or I sounds after a certain part of the voice. For the Tenor voice they normally start flipping to an Ah after G. You can take other vowls higher but it's not recommended. I'm classically trained singer for the past 2 years.

This video definitely helped me some although I’m still confused af about my voice type. In high school I was told I was a baritone but since then, I’m 24 now, I’ve been told I’m a “lyric” tenor. My range is G2-G5 but I can only be full voice from D3(I think, the one right above that G2) to A4(I think, the one below the high C). I can’t belt out those really high Cs like they do on broadway or opera which bums me out but I can climb up their relatively easily, it’s just not quite as full. It’s not falsetto but not chesty, not sure how else to explain it. Last role I portrayed was Drew Boley in Rock of Ages and let me tell you, that show was definitely the most challenging role I’ve ever portrayed. *i put the parentheses in there because I can’t read music so Im not positive on the numbers but I know where they are in relation to others*

Hi Samuel Bradley, i love your channel and videos, very concise and straight to the point. I've always been in self conflict with myself because i can't seem to figure out my voice type. I can have a total vocal range of C#2 to Bb6, but i am most comfortable singing or vocalizing at E2 to E5 (F5, when i am well warmed up). My low notes and chest voice is supported from a D2 to Eb4 respectively and my voice shifts into a much lighter placement from F4 to C5 (From F4 i can't sing with my full voice), from C#5 to F5, my voice sounds belty, heady and nasally placed, as i can even sing up to an A#5 when i sort of place the notes in my nose region, my voice flips into a flageolet from G#5 all the way up to Eb6 but i can't seem to sing here or readily access this part of my range, but i can make sounds like exclamations using reversed phonation from A5 to Bb6 (C#7 on a good day) I know this is a lot, but i need help What is my voice type? kzbin.info/www/bejne/np-2e6qXorihd6s I know it isn't much but Please watch this video where i cover Beyonce's Sandcastles. Thanks. 🙏😭😣😬

I'm not 100% sure. But from that clip, your voice sounded very free and natural in that lighter higher place. Had a great ease up there and you didn't force too much weight up there. So it sounded to me like a tenor voice, with its higher timbre. Obviously if you're singing lower songs it may be different. But that song sounded like a tenor!

“Higher chest notes”, a tenor does not sing with their chest voice under any circumstances. They sing with their “head voice”.
@raddist7012
@raddist7012 3 жыл бұрын
Wrong, we do sing with our chest. It's just that it's better to use our chest sensation in the lower area of our voice. The higher we go, we still use those chest sensations, but we also let go of all the weight. While the sound feels lighter and softer in our head, in reality it's very loud and ringing.

@@markcasey2517 head voice is lighter but a tenor can still feel those vibrations in the chest area when we sing higher. The sound in the higher area feels less "full" as in the lower area as it sounds softer, lighter in our head. The actual sound produced is actually loud, however the sounds should be fluent throughout the rest of the voice, however the sensations may shift a little. A tenor still uses the "foundation" (aka "chest" voice) whether they sing up or down. There's just a slight gear shift.

If there are double tenor and double bass lines in a men's choir, tenor 1 would be best suited for counter tenors and tenor 2 would be for tenors. However, counter tenors are rare and due to that rarity, some tenors will share tenor 1 with counter tenors and some tenors will share tenor 2 with baritones. As long as there are double tenor and double bass lines, my voice would naturally sit in the range of that tenor 2 line, which is still lower than tenor 1. We, tenor 2 guys, will normally sound beefier than those tenor 1 guys. That is why we sing a little lower.

Nessun Dorma is not a high C, it is a high B. Pavarotti was a light lyric tenor. Just for some perspective, in opera terms, his voice was never known for its power and size. Pavarotti did not have a particularly big voice. In opera the voice type is determined by the size of the voice. Pavarotti sounded like a choirboy next to dramatic tenors such as Mario Del Monaco and Franco Corelli. Of it is interesting to think that Steve Perry and Pavarotti have similar voice types.

A G2 is a pretty common note for a lot of tenors. It may be more proficient the higher it goes. But a male voice could often get down to some form of G2. If it's full though, guess it means you just have really good muscle control and know how to keep your chords closed in your upper range and then most likely lighten and mix really well while going higher. what in the world is brendon urie doing featured here...it is very likely he is not a tenor. You can hear his LOW resonant speaking voice, his great low notes(sounds like frank sinatra down there yeah I know sinatras his hero but thats exactly the reason ) and the fact that he struggles to sing a G4 (like any baritone and unlike every tenor so he starts mixing a lot more there), his registration/passagio seems to be at Eb4-E4 (at the most he can't sing an E4 at low volume without mixing or using head resonance unlike a tenor who would easily sing an E4 in chest and most would speak-sing it) and he uses head/mask resonance up to F#4 (again like a high baritone/lyric baritone would)....ticks all the boxes for a baritone. This just goes to shows you how useless classification is in contemporary music, a well trained baritone with a very good mix can sometimes fool some people.

Most of the One of the Directioners, Charlie Puth, Sam Smith, Sean Mendez, Justin Bieber. My favourite tenor pop artist is hands down MIGUEL! His instrument is so beautiful from top to bottom. Manly, dark lows and a soaring, strong head voice that makes me swoooon. 😍 It helps that l can keep up with them. I can sing phrases down to A2. Some male voices are indeed Very High. I being low voiced can belt all of Bruno Mars' songs. His modal head voice goes up to around B5, just like me! extremely high tenors are called altino. Maybe singer Mar is one and possibly Bruno as well? I think Darren Hayes's voice is comparable to MJ

Jeremiah Sheppard I don't see him struggling at all. Maybe you caught him singing on a bad day? His high range is pretty good to me. F4 is a common passagio for the Tenor voice. The Tenor voice among male voices is the equivalent of the Soprano for the females: a voice that is known to soar into their respective high, BRIGHT ranges. Mendez has noted comfort for going down to Bb2 in many of his songs. That is a little bit lower than the standard C3 chest voice tenors sing, but not by much. Even female Altos can do this, so it's nothing special. His voice is not that low compared to say Troye Sivan, who has a darker baritone quality down to F2, but just as boyish!

@@arxsyn so I'm a 16 year old boy and I'm pretty sure my voice has stopped going any deeper... My tessitura is very high for a boy (around F3-F5) which I believe is the common alto range So am I an "altino" or just a high tenor ?
@arxsyn
@arxsyn 4 жыл бұрын
@@dc9067 l am a true Contralto. My chest voice technically starts at D3. For a standard Tenor it should be C3. The low mezzo E3, high Mezzo F3. Your voice is indeed very high. It could be you have a very under developed low range, or your voice is still developing or slow to develop. Give it some time. The highest vocal classification for the male voice is the natural counter tenor. For all intents and purposes, it is pretty much identical to the female Contralto voice. These two voices are quite rare. I am writing a book on the contralto voice by the way. Of course l will be writing about the very high male voices as well. I really have heard a number of high voiced males in my life. For example l heard a man with clear skin and not much facial hair whose singing voice is very Alto like, a music write up compared this singer to Adele! He's part of a music group and for the life of me, l can't remember his group or his name. ☹️ So l will have to rely on singers of the past, not the contemporary ones in my book. Perhaps the lead singer from Journey is an altino. I noticed he can belt very high in their most famous song. Little Jimmy Scott is the quintessential counter Tenor, he's often described as a Contralto, he indeed sounds like a low voiced women, with an uncanny resemblance to the great Sarah Vaughan! That velvety, rich, chocolate tone is very common one among contraltos. I count myself lucky l have this quality in my voice and l can technically sing high Tenor, my chest voice goes up to G4. For full voiced singing with power and projection, around F5 is my max in pure high register.

@@arxsyn alright, thank you so much for all these informations Your book sounds very interesting ! I do really sound like a deep voiced female, and I can replicate a more girly (soprano/mezzo) tone depending on where I place my voice But I'm scared that my vocal chords will be damaged if I try singing or even talking in a higher pitch constantly (even tho I just place my voice differently to produce a sweeter sound, so idk if it's unhealthy ?) I actually do like my voice and I don't want my tessitura to become any deeper (except for extending my vocal/supporting range) Anyway, I don't exactly know which category I fit (maybe more than one ?) but that's part of what makes my voice special lol

1. The information in this video is very generalised, and seems to be based on what modern bad tenors sound like, not on real opera technique. 2. Opera singers don't belt. 3. Many baritone arias go to F#4 and up to A4. 4. All male voices work the same. No differens in how the muscles work. The difference is only the range, or rather the tessitura. 5. Operatic male singers don't use mixed voice (except for special cases with very high/soft notes, or for effect). 6. Tenors can easily sing lower than D3 if they have correct technique. 7. The notes around the passaggio are the HARDEST notes ant take years to master.

Like Bb4, B4, C5. I don't sound like what i wanted. I am not sure if i am tenor or high baritone or something. For example mornings i can go as low as F2 sometimes E2 easily. Am I baritone or tenor. Hi Sam, I have a question or two. I can sing F3-F4 comfortably however, I can’t hit notes from F#4-C#5 and when I do it’s always unintentional but I can sing D5-A5 with a lot of ease in chest. When I’m trying to hold notes in the lower 4th register I tend to go into the 5th register(for example: if im holding a D4 it turn into a D5 or if I’m holding a E4 it turns into E5).My voice is light. My first question is why can I sing in the upper range but I can’t sing notes from F#4-C#5? my second question is am I a tenor? I can even sing C6 and the highest I’ve gone consistently is G6. It would mean a lot if you would give me feedback. Thank you for this video!

Based on what you've described, you are definitely a light tenor with a falsetto extension (what voice teachers call countertenor). Your F3 to F4 is where your chest voice is comfortable, and F#4 to G4 is perhaps where your voice usually transitions into your falsetto. As a countertenor, you are going to feel most comfortable in your falsetto, and that is perhaps why your voice switches octaves when holding a note (either that or your overtones are very powerful). Below the C#5 is quite low for the falsetto which is probably why you're having some trouble with that area. What I would suggest is that you do some vocal exercises to extend your chest voice and some vocal exercises to lower your falsetto with equal volume, this will help to develop a strong mixed voice to improve chest participation in your high notes. I hope I have been helpful.

Yes he's right! A baritones max high note is likely A4 (or rarely B4). Likely this means that g4 is near the end of their range. All singers must sing in the middle of their voices for healthy singing. An average bari would tire out if constantly singing g4 all the time. Avg Bari comfortable range C3-E4 (B4). @@markcasey2517 it's not theory, its a fact. Baritones and tenors sing in the middle of their voices, however a tenors middle voice sits higher than a baritone. The extremities of ones range can be sung efficiently if the song calls for it. A baritone can obviously graze tenor notes, however a baritone can't stay in that higher range for long periods of time or else they start straining. Same goes for the tenor reaching too high in his range. Obviously, both voices have limits. And we must except those limits or else we face a plethora of problems in the long term. I wouldn't even focus on your voice type so early on. An untrained voice means next to nothing. When I first started singing around 6 or 7 years ago, I could hit an e2 and I couldn't even hit a D4. I thought I was a bass. Years of training has made me realise that I'm a tenor, my tessitura has changed significantly and now I can sing a C5 and struggle to hit the lower notes that I used to be able to hit. A have a deep speaking voice but my singing voice sounds very high and thin. Just look at most rock singers, their voices are often gravely and deep, yet they can belt their asses off way into tenor registers, probably because they actually are tenors or can control their voices very well. Don't pigeonhole yourself too early. It takes years of training for your voice to truly blossom and mature.
