Thank you so much to Chesterton Radio for your constant refilling of the supply line of these entertaining plays. I love the diction and cut-glass accents which maybe only the Queen speaks with now. Then there are the customs of another age when sherry was the tipple of choice, women wore nylons and smoking was deemed a health habit. For all who love English tradition, these plays are a treat.

As a child I read every Somerset Maugham story I could. Now still enjoy his style. Im just a little baffled by the ending..are we left with a penniless widow or a vastly enriched one? Could someone please reassure me? Was it essential that George survived until the following morning to deal with the newly revealed situation regarding the mine, or did it not matter and the widow inherits? I cannot reveal which ending I would prefer. Did I miss a key phrase somewhere?

Given the occurrences of the last 5 years here in the US, I would have to say WSM was prescient.... George Winter sounds an awful lot like a certain double-dealing, lying American politician/businessman who will do anything to get his way.

Wow! "Knock some sense into her"! Really? A father encouraging his son-in-law? Thank heavens the world and society, for many people, have changed for the better. I read WSM when I was youngter and thoroughly enjoyed his writing. Now, as a senior citizen, my vision of this world of yesteryear is one of shock. But grateful to hv access to this dead world.

The ending was dramatic but unrealistic. George Winter was a true alpha, and he wouldn't have given up at that point. It's a pity so few writers understand alpha males.

@katiedotson70410 ай бұрын
@@tizwoz I, too, am an animal lover. I've had nothing but rescues for close to 30 years. Not one of those animals would have treated me the way that George treated every person he met. Leaving others broke and destitute was just business. Lies, fraud, bribery, extortion, and blackmail were just tools of the trade. There was not one person that he expressed any real concern for. But when it looked as if he would have to pay the consequences for his actions, he took a very cowardly way out, leaving others to clean up the mess.

George Winter is the epitome of Mr. Nasty: arrogant, bullying and a source of pain to his wife Catherine who wants to divorce him.
