I think the reason the jokes don’t always hit is because the Addamses never struggled with the modern world in the TV show or in the movies. Gomez was an active business investor that stuck strictly to the schedules of a financial year but had so much money that he didn’t notice he was being taken advantage of. Morticia was an active member of several social clubs and the Ladies’ Auxiliary and the school PTA. Pugsley and Wednesday went to school with regular kids. The family just was just so cheerfully different while also being wealthy and confident enough to get away with their eccentricities even in the face of “Good Old Fashioned America.” They were weird and proud and it didn’t matter if people understood them. When carolers show up at the door, the traditional and proper Addams greeting is a pot of boiling something on the head. An engagement means a bridal shower same as any other family, but the Addamses just put a special twist on it just by being themselves! And they support one another no matter what. So long as they are happy and using the right tools for their experiments, have at it family! Having the Addamses be hermits with a “no outside world” policy just doesn’t feel right and it doesn’t fit with why the Addams Family was such a hit.

I know in Coraline they had a ton of characters with crazy body proportions yet it doesn't come off as annoying or cheap (granted those character designs also went along with the character's personality) so perhaps they could have made the designs work in computer animation if it tied it more with their character (I have not seen the movie myself and this is just off of content covered in reviews, so I could also be completely wrong)

It's an annoying change, because the Addams Family has always been portrayed as unconditionally loving and accepting in prior media. People hold up Gomez and Morticia as the ideal couple, but less spoken about is how they're also ideal parents. An episode I remember from the original show has Pugsly going through a phase of wanting to be a boy scout, which his parents are disturbed by, but they seek advice and then do their best to involve themselves in their son's new interest despite how uncomfortable it is for them.

Not to mention what they did to Gomez as well, he was a highly educated man that dressed to a T and absolutely worshiped his wife. That's what I said, and was also around the time I really stopped caring about the movie. Like, shouldn't her response to him comparing her hand to a dead fish while he kisses it be something more along the lines of "save the flattery for when we get home" or "You always know JUST what to say"? I feel like that would've been a more appropriate joke to make here rather than an unfunny sight gag. It's like they sacrificed character development for the sake of humor, and poor humor at that.

My issue is the “We’re scared that no one will accept us and the world is a cruel and dangerous place. We want our family to be safe and accepted” thing that The Addams’s were scared of. Um…last I checked, the Addams’s didn’t care what people thought of them. Any insult or ill will was taken as a gesture of affection and kindness for them. They welcomed it! I think in one of The Addams Family animated shows, a neighbor, who really hates them, insulted them and/or tried to get rid of them. And the Addams’s? Actually in different incarnations of the Addams Family, the family relations change. In the original 1964 series, the 1998 - 1999 revival The New Addams Family, Grandmama is Gomez’s mother while in the films and the 1990s animated series she’s Morticia’s mom. They even lampoon this in the Broadway musical where Gomez is surprised she’s his mother and tells Morticia he thought she was *her* mother and Morticia states “She may not even be part of this family.”
@PatrickPrejusa2 жыл бұрын
that's been a matter of confusion since the tv series
@therealCrazyJake2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that kinda has a tendency to change with newer iterations, considering that not only was Grandmama Gomez’s mother in the original ‘60s show, but that Fester was originally Morticia’s uncle instead of Gomez’s brother. That family dynamic is somewhat malleable; what ISN’T malleable, however, is the family’s unconditional love and support for one another, even when faced with something that makes them uncomfortable, Gomez and Morticia being relationship goals (AND the implication that they’re kinky as all fuck, which tbf this movie sort of hints at, only as subtly as a modern PG rating will allow, possibly less), and the fact that the Addams give literally zero fucks about what anyone outside of the family thinks of them, their appearance, or their lifestyle choices. Wednesday having a non-goth phase could have made for a clever story arc, but this movie BUTCHERS every aspect of it! The family themselves are butting heads way more than they ever reasonably would be, and character traits and behaviours are ignored entirely for the sake of making a watered down, safe, bland mess of a movie that misses the entire point of the IP it wants to represent. Gomez wouldn’t give six fucks about tradition, just that his family is safe (for an Addams, at least) and happy (or the emotional equivalent of joyous for being an Addams). Sorry this turned into a tangent, there is just so much this movie got wrong, my point being that who is related to whom is the least of the movie’s problems.

I think a problem with a lot of the jokes you’re describing is the delivery. For example: That “surfing the web” one had the potential to be funny had Morticia been self-aware of how dumb of a joke she was making. Like, halfway through of just silently walking across the bridge, she gives the other people a funny look and says “Hmphf. Surfing the web. Get it?- hahah, terrible.” Or something like that. Morticia has always kinda had “dad” humor, it’s always been a sort of minor trait of the whole family (in the original series’ anyway), I just think the DELIVERY and SETUP is more what is falling flat than the actual jokes themselves, if that makes any sense. Do we still need movies about accepting people? Have people really not gotten it so hard that we need to make every other movie about it? It feels so dirty to be using the Adam's family like this. Arent they like a celebration of the weird and macabre? Do we really need to put THEM in this kinda situation? To the point that we have someone ATTACK THEIR HOUSE WITH BOULDERS JUST FOR BEING DIFFERENT?!?!?! That feels like spitting on their legacy

Somebody on Twitter asked people to list abusive relationships that people love, and after I said "basically any couples from the silent or boomer generation on TV" I made a realization. Morticia and Gomez being millennial parents just wouldn't work. Part of what made them stand out for their time (both the comic and the 60's live action sitcom) is that they are absolutely in love with each other. It was made in an era where one of the most quoted lines from television was from Ralph threatening to beat his wife every time she was sarcastic and that was treated as being a beloved, classic joke. "I hate my wife" was relatable to the silent and boomer generations. Divorce was practically unheard of to them. These days it's taboo *not* to get a divorce if you hate your spouse. Why the fuck would you subject yourself to living with somebody who you hate? We live in a generation where living with your significant other before getting married is encouraged. Millennial divorce rates are some of the lowest in generations- not because it's seen as taboo to leave, but because you had time to experience that generations before you (besides maybe gen x) did not. I don't want to toot my generation's own horns, but Gomez and Morticia's relationship is normal these days. And in a way that's kind of beautiful- the fact that loving your spouse was seen as "weird" is finally normalized. But that's why Gomez and Morticia being millennials wouldn't work- because their love for each other is normal. But it'd just be really fucking miserable watching the main couple hate each other so I'm glad that they seemed to have kept that part in.
@WobblesandBean2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say their relationship is normal. It's still incredibly difficult to find that endless love and undying unconditional support, the romance, and that deep understanding of one another that they have.
@asellandrofacchio7263 Жыл бұрын
"millennial divorce rates are some of the lowest in generations" yeah, that's because millennials are just starting to marry. Did you forget to turn on your brain this morning?

A lot of those "boomer" TV couples were only made for laughs. People can differentiate fiction from reality. So no, men didn't regularly hit women in the 50's, that was a lie made up by chronically online people. Every time period in existence had those horrible relationships that was seen as such. Times change, people don't.

As a kid who grew up with the Addams Family movies when I was 12 and 14 in the early 90's, please watch those movies. Those movies and the old Addams Family sitcom are worth watching. You'd have a much better idea of how cool they are from watching them.
@thebigmystery78412 жыл бұрын
Whats silly is the design aspects of the characters make sense. The addams family are 'weird' but to them the outside onlookers are the weird ones. The problem tho is that I can tell the designs were made for a 2d look. Or st least their concepts were designed that way. The super exaggerated features I think wouldnt be as jarring in 2d. But in 3d...the proportions are just too weird ESPECIALLY since they dont USE those to their advantage. The character deaigns can be off the wall in the Transylvania series because the energy and movement in them feels cartoony. So the designs lend well to the action of the characters. Here...everyone looks crazy but are also stiff. So it comes across just....odd.

I despise this version of the Addams. The Addams family is in a way the perfect family like they care for each other, they support each other at every turn, Gomez and Morticia have the ideal love life for crying out loud but this version is just a stupid mock up of their dynamic. Also I know it's technically in line with the comic design but I can't get over Gomez's design, for me it's probably the worst one. I might be too nostalgic towards Raul Julia's Gomez but I adore that version of him, the slick and joyful business man with passion in every word that he was is just too good. Oh and the design of every "normal" person looks like they were held at gun point by a blind person to create designs that looked good for them and the blind lunatic just stopped randomly at this ones.

The sad part is, there is the bones of an interesting film here. Adams move from their home to the USA, seclude themselves (except Lurch who would have to buy groceries and stuff), and don't even notice the town, and all the normal suburban folks feel threatened by the spooky. folks who live in the house on the hill. Bam easy enough story right there.

As a woman named Parker myself (I'm also a 3d character animator) it hurts me that these characters designs are so...um, interesting. I attempted to watch the movie earlier this October, and I made it about thirty minutes before I shut it off. One of the only compliments I had for the movie was somehow they knew to put ambient occlusion in the corners. And that was about it. Everything else is atrocious, and I don't wanna share my name with that character.

when this movie came out, i had a hyperfixation for the Addams family, i watched all the episodes i could find, and the movies. even went as Wednesday for Halloween, so when this was announce, i was existed, but never went to see it. and i'm glad that i didn't because this movie is just god awful. the sequel is even worse. i still wished they were able to make the stop motion version, that would have been so cool. also, there was the webseries with Wednesday as an adult, and the people that made it got a cease and desist letter from that studio that made this terrible movie. Which is just awful, Melissa Hunter's KZbin series, 'Adult Wednesday Addams' had to be taken down even though it was under fair use and at the time the Addams family was in the public domain, though i might be wrong. God the Addams Family deserve so much better than this. they just the characters so wrong it causes me pain. I hope we can get a good animated movie for them at some point. anyway, loved the video Dazz.

The Addams Family aren’t public domain characters… yet. Considering the characters were created in 1938 and works made in 1926 entered the public domain this year, it won’t be till 2034 when they’ll enter the public domain, except for Cousin It and Thing since Thing didn’t his appearance til the 50s and Cousin Itt was created for the 1964 series and just stuck in all Addams Family reincarnations since.

The Addams Family is supposed to be a subversive critic of "being normal" and "fitting in", but these big studios cannot for the life of them do something like that, they need to pander to the broadest possible audience, so they can't say in a whisper that maybe being normal isn't all it's made out to be. So, they can't do anything with the Addams Family except turn it into "bLaCk Vs PiNk", and make both sides cartoonish and bland.
