I think it’s important to note that a lot of these AI/ML models will not sans the human portion ever. In oncology, a pathologist NEEDS to double check what the machines output was even if it was at 99.999% certainty, in case there was a false positive output. A trained human eye will always trump a machine in these use cases. But I think the marketing and lack of understanding of AI makes all of the news more scary than it is.

I was going to say -- as a data scientist, this concept of "AI" is being taken wayyyy too out of proportion because of its name. Most AI is just using data science to make predictions. When youtube gives you recommended videos, that's AI. When google gives you ads based on your searches, that's AI. Even chatbots have been used for YEARS, think of how many vendor websites have chatbots to support you in your shopping. There is so much alarmist news out there and I don't understand why. I think the biggest priority right now is to make sure that there are protections with the kind of data we collect and being cognizant that data is sociotechnical and thus biased.

@@makslargu5799 i believe you’re right. I think there’s a difference between chat bot and something like chatGPT. Chatbot just has a finite database of responses that might fit like a query. But chatGPT has so much data that it trained on that it can create more unique responses to an individual’s unique input. Does that make sense?

Don’t worry about the designers Emil! The majority of us are using AI in our jobs to make our lives easier. It’s essentially the designer side hustles that are getting hit due to a) customers getting savvy and using AI rather than purchasing from an artist; and b) 5am cold shower, hustle culture bros flooding the artist marketplaces (Etsy, Redbubble, etc,) with their AI creations. I still think that creative types have a better approach to using AI as we essentially can be selective with AI outcomes and can use outcomes as a starting point or a base for art or writing.

Also I just wanted to add: I have a theory that AI will flop over time. I say this because I can see a future where artists and art curators (museums, galleries, etc) will try to go offline and keep their images off of the internet. Meanwhile people will continue to flood online databases with sub par AI outcome images. Then the databases that future AIs rip from will become lower quality as they’ll be heavily loaded with bad AI outcomes. I can see that becoming a vicious cycle. The same with chat GPT - I can see a future where that 20% chance of wrong info snowballs and gets worse and worse with every future chat bot AI. Then at a certain point we won’t be able to trust search engine results for information and will have to go back to encyclopaedias again - unless they start using ai too! 😂

40:29 as someone who works in banking, specifically lending and quality control, I could see AI being used as a way to appraise properties, run risk analysis on clients based on internet activity, auto create documents for clients to sign, quality check documents for accuracy, etc. But I think that would be too much of a liability for a bank to go through, since AI like GPT-4 is only based on certain data in a certain timeframe (see Bing trying to gaslight a user into thinking it’s 2022 in 2023).

The thing that makes me not worry about AI right now is that our current machine learning AIs do not develop their own means to see an end to. In other words, they only gather or produce information to follow the precepts of their programming. They are not creative, nor are they idea creation machines. They do not have a cognition in that sense. I personally believe that they will not possess programming capable of replicating that kind of human cognition for a very long time.

We often make the mistake of misinterpreting the term "artificial intelligence" to be "artificial consciousness", which these machines certainly are not. They are no more capable of becoming a lazy slob than they are of becoming a malevolent overlord. They are math machines right now, and that's all they're going to be until we actually get a handle on what consciousness means in a human.

I understand the criticisms of AI in your video but it's hard to agree with the doomer mentality you guys kind of took this episode. One thing AI is missing is the human spirit in the stuff we create. We go out of our way to buy hand made items compared to factory because of that principal, so why would it be different for AI? I work as a software engineer and have many exhausting conversations about AI replacing my role, when in reality it has only helped me implement boilerplate code and tweak it to fit the feature I need. And even then sometimes it's wrong in simple coding questions itself, not saying it won't improve later on but that's where it is. I can see how AI for art generation can even help designers come up with concepts to then perfect using their own style but I guess we will need to see how big this thing happens. Thanks for the episode guys.

Your camera in your phone uses AI to enhance the image, Instagram and TikTok "algorithms" are AI code. @@tavo2968 I'm aware, however Emillionaire seems to fail to grasp that this isn't necessarily new tech, but a more advanced version of something we've all used everyday for over a decade. My point stands in that the buzzword of month isn't new, has 1,000 validated, relied upon use cases, and has eliminated unnecessary jobs for years and it hasn't been an issue. There are things humans don't need to do that if they can be automated will be. It's an unfortunate reality, but plenty of careers aren't future proof, being aware of that as far back as college when you decide what you want to do with your life will spare you that pain in the future. Whether you have the forethought or not to do that is up to the individual.
