We can only hope that the excellent condition of 'Terror' in ice cold water with hair in a recovered hairbrush still intact would lead me to hope Captain Crozier's intact work desk in his cabin contains papers detailing exactly what happened. The remote vehicle also found a heavy wooden tripod and box still stowed away-probably the expedition's camera. If paper survived then the copper plates with images of the lost expedition probably have also. It'll be a huge discovery when Parks Canada attempts to recover these. It would be quite the thing as the Inuit claimed to have seen a white man in 1853 that they thought was Crozier. Had Crozier even been rescued I'm sure the Admiralty would have pinned the blame on a common Irishman and his career, and any hope of future commands and way of life would be forever gone. He had nothing to return to and if anyone went 'native' it would have been him. His letter to close friend Ross is heartbreaking to read that he wrote while crossing the Atlantic to Disko Bay. He felt completely alone, didn't have any close friends, was heartbroken by Sophia Cracroft, and probably felt he'd been snubbed by the Admiralty yet again. Yes, he *should* have been in command but the Admiralty didn't want the Northwest Passage discovered by a common born, and Irishman at that. Crozier is a hero in my book of a common man that succeeded through sheer willpower and competence.

Franklin wasn't a dunderhead. He learned from his first disastrous expedition and in the following two got everyone home and he studied the experiences of his fellows extensively. Franklin also wanted more dried fruits as he was worried about scurvy and wanted non-canned stuff as far as possible to keep the diet of his men varied and reduce the chance of mutiny.

Actually Crozier was the right kind of Christian. He was a Church of Ireland man, and being Irish didn't stop McClintock from getting prestigious commands. I think Crozier's problem is that he was a miserable git. Competent but a miserable git. And a miserable git will not help crew morale in a part of the world that lends itself readily to thoughts of doom and gloom. Furthermore, Franklin was known from both his expeditions to have kept his men going in circumstances where they might otherwise have not. Franklin was also not reckless. He turned back a little early on his second expedition - he wasn't going to risk being stuck in the extreme north of Canada for the winter. So Franklin was perfectly qualified as a commander and a scientist to command the expedition.

After your first video on that subject matter, I watched 2 documentaries that dealt with Franklin Expedition that went into great detail to explain all of it and what we know about it so far. One thing that I am still baffled at is that, to this day there are people who say the Inuit killed and ate the Crew and thats so typical of primitives, I was disgusted to see this pompus British guy (forgot the name) of some Historical Society to explain how it could only be the Inuit that killed the Franklin Expedition because European men from Civilization would never succumb to cannibalism and would murder each other. Thankfully, the narrator and then several Scientists who have studied and researched Inuit culture said that this is utter bullshit because the Inuit are not cannibals and would only have attacked the Expedition if the Crew members would have threatened them, something that did not happen from all accounts, not to mention that the knife marks found on the bones where not from any weapons the Inuit had. This whole myth about the Inuit killing the Franklin crew led to the British treating them even more poorly then they already did and for decades after that, the Inuit where vilified in British society for no reason then saving face.
@LtHavoc19837 жыл бұрын
That is what I was saying and that Brit was not a historian, he was just part of some Preservation Society trying to protect Franklins good name or something. I have to re-watch that documentary to see who that bloke is again.
@LtHavoc19837 жыл бұрын
Well, I rewatched the Documentary called "The Lost Franklin Expedition" and there was this historian called Earnest Coleman who was talking about how the knife marks could only be from an attack by the Inuit and that its impossible that the highly moral Franklin Crew became cannibals.
@Swarm5096 жыл бұрын
Watching this after just binge watching The Terror, and holy crap did they get the details right.
