Lavabending is a subset of earthbending. This gives Zaheer's crew the full complement of 4 elements. With metal and lightning being more common in the industrial age of Korra, the "advanced" bending techniques are bloodbending for water, combustion for fire, lava for earth, and... well you'll see for air. You could argue that Ming-hua's ability to waterbend without gestures counts (as well as Yakone and his sons), but I believe any bender could eventually learn to bend without the martial forms if they tried hard enough.

Lava bending isn't part of firebending, it's a form of Earthbending as is metalbending - The Firebending special form is Combustion Bending [the 3rd eye stuff] and Lightning Bending, Waterbending has Spirit Bending [the way to calm dark spirits] and Blood Bending, Airbending has Spiritual Bending. There are also a few other bendings we have not seen yet. I'm not sure why lava goes with earth rather than fire, but I suppose it's similar to how waterbenders can freeze the water, but more extreme.

Air benders tend to be the best spirit energy benders but actually all the benders have that potential case in point unaloq janora and others. Water has healing and blood bending. Earth seems to have the most with metal bending. Lava bending. Truth Seering and sonic detection and even sand bending maybe. And fire lightning. Boomy boom boom head and flame flying to an extent. A y others.

LOK doesn't play by the rules. The current romantic possibility with Opal and Bolin literally sails away in the opening scene. Agree that Mako is super sharp but him and Korra don't want to work together so the advantage of having them both on hand is passed over. Thanks bunny! I don't think you missed anything fwiw.

Lavabending is Earthbending, my theory is that someone with both fire and earth ancestry, like you would find in a melting pot country like the United Republic, could do it, but also the Avatar would be able to learn it, having all four elements at their disposal, and you saw Roku use it when he destroyed his temple, and when Roku was explaining the Avatar State to Aang, you saw another of the past Avatars doing it.
