Seeing Korra so beaten down in the final scene gets me every single time. Being the Avatar was her whole identity, and her physicality and bending was what she valued herself with, and seeing her crippled and so tired is absolutely devastating. Comparing her to the girl that took down the Triple Threat Triad goons with such confidence in book 1 to her here is a world of difference.

Just saying when Korra woke up to see her dad she probably thought she died because she thought her father was killed. She also probably thought she ended the avatar lineage too. Poor girl has gone through a lot.

This is just a personal idea, but I think what wrecked Korra the most was knowing that there was no next avatar. Other Avatars failing in their battles meant they were stored in the lineage. Being broken as she was meant that there was NO Avatar. Her being crippled and poisoned, but still alive, meant the world was defenseless. It wasn’t just her personality, to BE the Avatar. It’s also that her failure and enfeeblement were so complete that her being alive was a detriment to the world. And that’s as severe a place as you can ever go. To realize "the world would be better, if I were removed from it."

@@thunderofgr I absolutely agree with you. Tenzin (unknowingly, of course) rubbed salt in her wound by saying that the airbenders would help where there's trouble, essentially confirming to Korra in her mind that she isn't needed anymore.

Zaheer was the last straw that broke the camel's back for Korra. Everyone before Zaheer like Amon and Vaatu affected her (we know because we see her hallucinate them. They are still in her head), however she would pretend they didn't and/or put up the brick wall to make it look like she wasn't affected by them, to keep herself together. Zaheer was just the last straw that finally broke Korra. People do that. Some people who experience something rather traumatic make it look like the experience never affected them. The next day they seem like the same person, but in reality/mentally they were affected. They just weren't showing it, trying to keep themselves together. Until they can't anymore.
@SubzeroBlack68
@SubzeroBlack68 9 ай бұрын
The thing is the issues Korra has to deal with are long term cultural and systematic issues, not things she can just punch to fix. With Amon, she only defeated him, it didn't get rid of the issues between benders and non benders. Tarrlok and Vaatu were defeated but there's still tension between the two water tribes and very different cultures despite overlap. Not the portals connect them together despite being separate states in the political world. Now there's also the issue with Spirits roaming free to do whatever they want around the world with no simple solution to categorize or group them together for management. As well as various spirits having weird supernatural powers. Now without the Earth Queen and fall of a political structure. 70% of the land mass has no supreme authority or working self sufficient government. Korra just has really hard issues she has to work with.

@judaihyuga 26 күн бұрын
@@SubzeroBlack68 Part of what makes Korra's story so good, and what a lot of the haters ignore, is that Korra's issues aren't as simple as taking down a single tyrannical asshole. People like Amon, Zaheer, and Kuvira aren't inherently evil people, they have good intentions that they take way too far. Korra is fighting to live up to the legacy of one of the most influential and revered Avatars that ever lived in a time where nobody seems to want the Avatar. The non-benders feel like the Avatars of the past didn't even see them. Unalaq and Vaatu wanted to destroy the maintainer of balance and replace it with an Avatar of Chaos. Zaheer and the Red Lotus think the world's better off without an Avatar at all. Lastly, you have Kuvira who took charge when the Avatar vanished and took her attempts to protect her home and people to violent extremes while resenting Korra for not being there when her country needed help. The thing people forget, is that the Avatar is human, too. Korra is a teenage girl that's getting bombarded on all sides by people that hate her just for existing and (topically) not being Aang. That would take a toll on anyone's psyche.

Every season so far has broken down some part of Korra's identity as the Avatar (and built it back up, to a degree). In the first season she loses her bending, but being brought to her lowest point allows her to regain it. At the end of the second season she loses her connection to her past lives as well as to Raava. She is able to connect to Raava again, but not her past lives. And at the end of season 3, her physicality and ability to serve as the Avatar is taken from her. At the same time, her legacy as the Avatar is further cemented by her actions in protecting the airbenders, as it is what leads to Tenzin having them follow Korra's example. After having watched the whole show there's always a certain sadness I feel in seeing Korra in S1 and 2. She can be hotheaded and selfish but there's also this wonderful innocent confidence that she has. She grows up a lot and for the better, but that part of herself is forever changed by what Zaheer and the Red Lotus do to her.

@@loco_logic TLOK1 > TLOK4? > ATLA2 > TLOK3 > ATLA3 > TLOK2 > ATLA1 I gotta put it squarely in the middle. Zaheer and his gang are super dangerous and cool to watch in action, but the overall storyline was a whole big load of whatever. No real twists or anything. Just very basic. The villains' motivation was dumb and didn't make any sense, and the places they spent most of the season were dull. Bits and pieces of the season were great (Earth Queen's death, Jinora becoming a Master, P'Li getting her head detonated, Korra and Asami spending the whole season together....), but it was just sprinkled in with a bunch of okay stuff. They're just never EVER going to manage better villains than Amon and Tarrlok, or a better setting than steampunk Republic City with old timey radio announcer guy, or a better horrifying twist than Amon taking Korra's bending and all the Bloodbending, or the shock ending of the fratricidal murder-suicide. In a better world Season 1 was the blueprint for the entire series, and Amon was the ultimate villain of the whole thing. Amon isn't just the best Avatar villain, he's flat-out one of the best villains of all-time. He's SO goddamn scary. If he'd been given 4 seasons he could've been up there with Doctor Doom, Mr. Freeze, and Darth Vader (before the Prequels ruined Vader). And Tarrlok grounding it all in political corruption and crime, and creating this deeply awful villain and situation that Korra couldn't just punch her way out of.... *chef's kiss* Been a long time since I watched Season 4 though. So maybe I'll end up ranking that lower. But Season 4 is pretty damn nuts, and the villains are more horrifying in very real ways, and the whole story is just a crazy place to go. And of course the ending is TWO SECONDS away from perfection... I pretty much still KNOW I'd rate it above Season 3.

I honestly can’t think of a season finale of an animated tv show that left me as exhausted as this. And to end with Korra dealing with recovering from both physical and psychological trauma. God there are so many live action shows I’ve seen I wish had the balls to go the extra mile with their characters like this show did. And I know that pain that Korra is feeling at the end all too well. My mom fought breast cancer for 3 years straight, then she broke her ankle and after 4 surgeries it just wouldn’t heal, because her white blood cell count was so low from the chemotherapy and radiotherapy the doctors said her ankle would never heal. So she was given a choice of more surgery or an amputation below the knee. We fought so hard but we had to choose the amputation, and after that we knew the fight ahead for recovery and a prosthetic leg was going to be hell. So I know what Korra is feeling. Sad, helpless and afraid that you might never come back.

Tenzin vs Zaheer is one of my favorite moments in all of LoK, I really wish it had gone on longer. In general, I wish we got more of Tenzin fighting scenes because the we have I think are really impressive. But also just watching him show Zaheer what an airbending master really looks like is so cool, if it had stayed 1v1 Tenzin would have absolutely won. Also don't forget - Kya IS the daughter of Katara after all, shouldn't be too surprised she was holding her own at the start. 😉

That doesn't say much though. Lin and Toph were both Toph's daughters and iirc Toph literally said that Suyin never quite got the hang of metalbending. So while possible talent doesn't necessarily carry over from one generation to the next.

Zaheer is such a smart villain too. He knows Korra's weakness is her emotions and never fights her without poison or some kind of drugs or chains to limit her and she still nearly bodies him every time. Her prime weakness is the air nation and her loved ones. The end of this episode gets me so hard too. Korra has always been so physically skilled and cocky that taking that away from her is the most devastating thing. Plus, some fanfic explores the ideas too of her being the Avatar (the one in the world) when unable to do the things the Avatar needs to do, which can lead to some dark thoughts about letting the cycle continue with someone else for the good of the world. Devastating stuff for someone who has always been so happy being super physical just unable to do that anymore.

27:06 I will never understand how no reactors I've watched haven't realized that Korra was "poisoned" with MERCURY. A bowlful of it literally shoved through her pores straight into her all of her body systems. (How, and more importantly, why Su-Yin bent it out through her mouth is a question for the ages. But it seems like they don't really understand Mercury in-universe yet.) Korra is frankly lucky that she survived as long as she did, let alone made it into a wheelchair, with that much exposure. To put it mildly: Mercury Poisoning with F you up.
@xenikos99
@xenikos99 9 ай бұрын
I see two viable explanations for the mouth thing (if we want to forget that its a cartoon and overanalyze things): 1. Su-Yin was thinking of it as an ingested poison and was reversing that motion. 2. If you want to get a substance out of the body as quickly as possible, you'd want to send it out of an orifice rather than have it ooze through the skin. If her self-healing was working at warp speed in the Avatar state, the mercury was likely getting filtered out of the blood into her kidneys and liver, so the shortest path is probably to pull it into the stomach from there and then back out the mouth.

It's funny but I remember looking it up right after the episode and only then finding out what was the Poison and all the stuff Mercury does to a person. It's just not something you automatically realize without knowng how It looks and moves etc
@HexalianRebelAgent
@HexalianRebelAgent 9 ай бұрын
@@xenikos99 Y'know what, very fair on both ideas; you're probably right. I had been thinking that pulling it up through her like that risked it getting caught in other places and lingering there. But obviously, Su-Yin wouldn't know that it was injected through Korra's skin.

@@HexalianRebelAgent Looping the loop more, Suyin maybe even doesn't know if she can pull the poison out of Korra's body. While mercury poisoning may have been known for centuries, metalbending has existed just by a couple of decades and severe mercury poisoning isn't a case doctors may see every day to have an already set understanding of how mercury behaves in the body and a protocol of how to extract it (granted it works as a treatment taking it out with bending; there's a reason why chelation is needed in the real world XD). Suyin does her best but, with the available information, seems like it was more a Hail Mary than a well thought out plan; as most medicine in the battlefield once was.

The poem that Zaheer recites says that in order to fly you need to let go of everything phisical that links you to the world. It its said that Laghima achieved that elevated state of extreme non materialism and because of that was able to spend the last years of his life whitout touching the ground. The scene where Zaheers flys is amazing because he trully loved P'li, and he could never really separate himself from the material world because of her, she was his only "earthly tether". And then she dies...The only thing holding him back. In that moment he wasnt angry nor sad, his ties were broken and he achieved a place of spiritual enlightenment. So he just...flew

There's a reason why Zaheer is so good at Airbending. Notice the scars that are all over his head and eyebrow, they look like sword slashes. And he has cauliflower ears, which are very common with MMA fighters. These details indicate that Zaheer is a great martial artist, and probably did a lot of battle before becoming a bender. Second of all, the Red Lotus obviously has a lot in common with the White Lotus. In Avatar we learned that members of the WL share their culture, knowledge, techniques, spirituality and etc. The RL does the same. So that's how Zaheer learned about the Air nation culture and bending techniques. (It's similar to how Iroh studied the Waterbenders in order to improve his Firebending.) Zaheer really connected to their ideology but radicalized it. Another interesting detail is when Zaheer told Korra about the kidnapping plan, and how they planned to train her with the RL members as her elemental masters. It's easy to find water, earth or fire teachers, but who would've taught her Air? Maybe that's where Zaheer comes into play. Zaheer was probably supposed to be Korra's Airbending teacher, and that's probably why he started studying about the Air nation culture to begin with. It's also possible that Zaheer was an air acolyte when he was younger. They're essentially the air nations fanclub. They adopted the air nomads lifestyle and culture to preserve and continue it. It makes sense because when Zaheer met Kaya he told her, "i always admired the culture". Fun fact: 'Laghima' is the name of one the abilities you can gain through spiritual enlightenment in Buddhist culture. This ability makes you lighter then air and gives you the ability to fly.
