There is perhaps no more iconic 1980s supercar than the Ferrari Testarossa. But the Testarossa has a big secret: it’s not a supercar. Oh, it has the performance in spades - but it’s actually a civilized grand tourer in personality.
That’s what surprises nearly everyone who drives one for the first time. It’s comfortable. Exceedingly quiet. It rides well. Other than unassisted steering and being wider than a full-size pickup truck, the Testarossa is an easy car to drive. Once it’s warmed up, that is.
On this week’s episode, Derek and Jason discuss all things Testarossa - from its crankiness when cold to its beginnings as a 365 BB and 512BB and its ending as a 512TR and 512M. BB has never stood for Berlinetta Boxer - how could it, when the Testarossa’s red-headed flat-12 isn’t a “boxer” engine? (It’s a flat-12, a horizontally opposed 12, or a 180-degree V-12, but not a Boxer, because opposing pistons share crankpins.)
Also, they discuss whether its BB name stands for Berlinetta Bialbero (twin-cam coupe, which would be weird because Ferrari already had a DOHC version of its V-12) or whether it was actually named after Brigitte Bardot. Then, there are the Monospecchio cars with center-lock wheels versus the later cars with two mirrors and five-lug wheels.
And then there are the inevitable comparisons to the Lamborghinis - the Miura and Countach, as well as the BMW E31 8-series and the front-engine Ferrari GTs and sports cars, including the Daytona.
The Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.
Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on KZbin alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile - and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with.
Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering - which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them.

I’ve bought my 512 TR when I was 27 and I will never sell it. It drives beautifully (when warm), turns like a go kart, is comfortable long distance and sounds godly with a Tubi. Never had any starting issues or stall issues at stop lights. I left it parked in airport parking for 2 weeks and came back and it started on the button and ran perfectly. Great nerdy discussion!

This realization sorta snuck up on me, but today I realized that The Carmudgeon Show has found its way to the very top of my “regular (meaning regularly airing) IG car show.” I literally enjoy these convos more than 95% of car reviews videos, many of which look the same, and many of which I don’t care for in the first place (because the hosts are poorly-informed, annoying in way or another, bad writers [if they even write at all], or any number of other reasons)... And of the competing “host-led convo/interview”-format shows, I simply find your show far and away the most appealing.. it’s super informative, the level of discourse is satisfyingly literate without being pedantic, you keep the focus on cars and this means even though you frequently talk about really expensive cars you don’t veer off into 30-minute digressions on the *other* favorite hobbies and interests of the 1% (I love to hear about old Ferraris, but please save your talk of superlative Cuban cigars and recent rare game hunting experiences in Botswana for your other KZbin shows/channels, thanks), and despite the whole “curmudgeon” conceit, you guys can’t conceal the fact that you ❤️❤️❤️ cars and you love talking about them and you appreciate the opportunity to work together doing this sort of thing, and it just comes through in your dialogue and exchanges and facial gestures and tone... And that makes this show that much more enjoyable to consume. Please keep up the good work.. The world needs more Carmudgeons. 💪🙏🏼🤙

A good article, and I absolutely detest the worship of 0-60 times by keyboard ninjas and sim addicts. Manufacturers care way too much about the holy number, and gear their cars to hit sixty with one (in some cases none) shift. That makes a car virtually miserable on a tight twisty road, or even an intersection. Having to downshift into first to get around a tight bend should be a crime, but it's necessary in many cars if you want to, you know, actually accelerate out of said bend. Next pet peeve is a top gear that is only minutely longer than the next lower gear. Germans are public enemy number one when it comes to this. Give me tight ratios, then a nice long top gear for relaxed highway cruising, and possibly better mileage and engine life. Carmudgeonly rant over.....

Once again, fantastic conversation. Thank you. Many years ago I was bought a Ferrari Driving Experience day which involved a Testarossa, 328, Mondial on a tight UK circuit. I came away utterly shocked because the car I would have bought if I had the money was the Mondial!!!! Testarossa and Countach where Athena Posters in my bedroom... for reference I was riding a Ducati 748SP at the time. On a tight circuit, I was most disappointed by the Testarossa, the weight transfer under heavy braking was scary! Thank you for clarifying why you should never drive your hero.......... Best videos on KZbin by the way. Keep them coming.

I think Harry Metcalfe has made it very clear that the testarossa is a very versatile grand tourer over the years, I mean it fits an outboard and 14 bottles of champagne in the front, what more can you ask for!!! edit: I saw you mentioned him later in the show, which is nice and Jason should definetely catch up with his videos! Thanks for the consistent content and stay safe!

It's definitely Bialbero (twin cam), pronounced the way hyphen did. This was confirmed by Forghieri in an interview with Davide Cironi.
@lebojay
@lebojay 2 жыл бұрын
Not that I disbelieve you (I don’t), but it’s interesting because the 275 GTB/4 and the 365 GTB/4 (aka Daytona) also had twin cams. That’s the meaning of the “/4” in their names - two cams per bank for four cams total.
@inPrincipleGames
@inPrincipleGames 2 жыл бұрын
@@lebojay Hey Jay. Exactly. The letter B stands for Bialbero in all of these examples as well. I'm assuming that G T stands for Gran Turismo. Anyway, I was able to find the exact interview and reference, time stamped for ya: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6uuf2WXmdmGl8k. Turn on subs if you can't understand Italian. They're not great, but they are serviceable.
@inPrincipleGames
@inPrincipleGames 2 жыл бұрын
LOL, lemme correct myself, the subs leave LOADS of context out. Basically Forghieri states that journalists at the time incorrectly labelled the car as a Boxer, and it doesn't matter how much Ferrari as a company or he himself insist to tell everybody that that interpretation is incorrect, nobody will listen. He concludes jokingly that he thinks it might be possible that they don't even believe him that it's Bialbero (funny, obviously, considering he was chief engineer at the time).

I worked on the cars when they were new(TR 512). I came from a Porsche back round so I was very familiar with modifying the CIS system. On the subject of getting idle and off idle correct on that CIS. I recall needing to modify the warm-up regulator and shimming the main distributor pressure. It was really important to get the valve clearance correct also. It was much more refined than a Countach but it didn't feel as secure as good as a 930. Each had its own distinct feel. Good show

Early Testarossas with the flying mirror and 16" inch single lug wheels are the best of the early Testarossas. The middle years were hampered with those especially annoying "mouse (safety) belts". Of course, I'm biased as I was the owner of an '86 flying mirror!

I drove a lot of these cars in my work back in the 80s. The M1 was much better than the Countach, and the Countach was nicer to drive than the 512BB. I drove a Countach from LA to Cleveland in a day and a half. It was really comfortable and I'm 6'2". The highlight was listening to Jeff Beck's "Beck's Bolero" at 150 mph as the sun came up on a backroad in Utah.

I'm 61and I remember when I was a kid, there was still a sentiment that women were not as capable as men for certain things. There were far fewer opportunities then and while we still have things to work on, that Gap has closed considerably. This reminds me of the stigma of homosexuals today. Some people won't give a gay person the chance to be hired, much less the opportunity to be the face of their company. If that rang true for Haggerty, we would be missing the amazing presentations we have enjoyed so much. These guys are amazing and should be appreciated for the content and humor that they deliver. Excellent work!

Good show. It was entertaining, enjoyable and very informative, but I didn’t understand why no one mentioned the real factor that made the Trstarossa so unique in that era which was the fact that it was the coolest car at that time because it was on Miami Vice. It presence was so pivotal to that show that it should have had a mention in the opening credits. That’s why it was so popular and that’s why they sold so many guys wanted to be like Sonny Crockett and the Ferrari Testarossa was one step in that direction.

The testarossa was born a grand tourer. Only some distant admirers may have mistaken it for a sports car. In its time, you drove the 328 for sporty sprints and the testarossa for crossing Europe. I still drive both cars accordingly. Now, with bespoke Öhlins and Toyo R888R, the testarossa will come rather close to sports car agility. A testarosa is a large boat. I'm sure mom didn't keep that French v6 long. Great talk ,I have no interest in that boat of a Ferrari. But it was when ,Donzi racing boats had the same look.

i had to stop the video and comment. At 37:39 he calls the 928 an " abortion of a car". this guy obviously has very little seat time in one of these wonderful vehicles. He even put up a picture of a 924. he completely had the wrong picture. this shows me he knows very little about these and is talking about something he has minimal knowledge of. I had several 911 sc and now have 2 928 s4's. the 928 was a great handling, fast, comfortable car that was ahead of its time in every aspect. it was more of a GT car than the 911, but was faster and would handle better in the hands of most drivers. With some slight mods (shatktune, xpipe, etc) it is a 180mph car and will run over 100 in the 1/4. I also own a cayenne s and a cayman s so i am not a complete 928 fanboy, i appreciate the brand overall. spend some time behind the wheel of a well sorted 928 and you will never call it an abortion........

I'd love to see an episode focused on 'facelifts'. Mechanical improvements aside, what are some examples where the revised design is actually an improvement to the original? In my opinion, most are a poorly executed attempt to sprinkle in some of the upcoming generation's design cues, compromising the cohesive design of the overall car. And what are some examples where there were enough significant mechanical improvements to outweigh the awkwardness of an out-of-place front fascia or tail light assembly etc.?

Way back when I was a young lad, I had a poster of a 365 BB on my wall. I still have a Burago die cast model of one. And I like learning new things. I grew thinking that BB stood for Berlinetta Boxer. Now I know! Oh! Is that an AMT Porsche 935 model kit up on the shelf behind Derek?

Jason I wonder how much they paid you for the Porsche Taycan article you did on R&T. Everyone has established that the range for that car is was greater than what they state... So much for unbiased opinion. Thankfully ISSIMI seems to be more on par with good automotive journalism.

Whatever myth or misconception is being discussed about the TR's character and place within the supercar phalanx then, now, 35 years later, it doesn't matter: Most people will see one now and then, and for those, who have the money and urge to buy + drive a Ferrari, a TR will not be the only car in their garage. All of the cars of an era live from the contrast or similarities to the models of their manufacturor before and after on the one hand, and on the other: the image, performance and look compared to the then-current competitors. So, when it comes to the TR, this legend lives from the unmatched elegant, timeless design re-interpreting the GTB/GTS/BBi elements, while also being one of the fastest, though, not most agile, what then was the F40 the Countach incarnates the contrast, using an unknown brute and angular design language ever, more resembling the tractors with the same logo (and topped by its brother LM002) the 959 on the other hand, seemlessly morphs from the 911 and maybe "Moby Dick" predecessors All these had different ideas and engineering philosophies behind and discussing the TR to being a maybe SL 560 competitor makes no sense. Also, Maserati was no match at that time, and many other makers gave up in this era (sometimes to be re-animated with other genes and engines of new owners). Would any serious driver use the TR on a race track? No - these brand or model cups exist to give some rich guys with too much money and lion hearts but no interest in golfing a playfield, to tell each other how great they are. The TR is pretty enough to be on any car enthusiast kid's wall and serious enough to argue that it fits into the 300km/h phalanx, a combination, that many later designs fail.

Think about it guys Enzo started off as a race car driver and most of the time when you find out what racers drive as personal cars they are sporty but comfortable, GT cars, anything really hardcore isn’t fast enough for someone who races F1 cars or prototypes so it’s a pain in the ass and a letdown compared with a race car so a GT car makes perfect sense.

Re. BB, air inlet, low and in front of rear wheels. I thought that teardrop (not really a teardrop) shape was a Gandini signature - appearing on a numerous prototypes and exotic cars he penned in the 60s and 70s. If so, how did it end up on a Pininfarina design? [EDIT] Duh! It's not a Gandini idea - it's a NACA scoop/inlet/duct. 🤦🏼‍♂️ I think I was incorrectly recalling that the diagonal wheelarch line _is_ one of his signature design elements - not the scoop thingy.

Car magazine UK clocked the 365 GT4 BB at 11.3 s to 100 mph - marginally quicker than the Countach LP400 and way quicker than the Porsche Turbo at 12.6 s in this direct comparison test.

Re. Early Testarossas' odometer position. Could it have been in the console near the gearstick, out of some misplaced (pun not intended) efficiency idea? My thinking is dependent on 2 things: if the speedo was electronic, it wouldn't require a mechanical drive cable from the transmission; if the odometer did need a mechanical drive, it would be conveniently achieved by simply moving the odo to the gearchange tunnel. I know some makers were moving to electronic speedos in the early 80s. If some aspect of gov't legislation / design rules (for accuracy of mileage, related to taxes etc in some jurisdictions) required a more reliable, less falsifiable design. Happy for my wandering mind to be proven completely wrong, of course. 🙂
