Seems like the 'that girl' routine also requires an inherent privilege of ✨tiiiime✨. Time is a resource that I don't think enough influencers acknowledge when they push "optimization" content. Kinda icky when I think about it. We shouldn't feel shame for not being able to match the lifestyle of someone with an uncommon amount of time within their own control. Excellent video as always Shelby 🧡

Why is it icky for them to create this content just because it doesn't apply to everyone? Would it be icky for someone to create a college study tips content because not everyone can go to college? If you are feeling shame, it's not the fault of those creating the content. If you think you need to be like them, you are the one holding yourself to that standard - nobody else. @@Eternalsunshinejewelry Maybe I haven't seen the videos of creators being like "If you don't live like me you should feel bad", but I don't think most of them are forcing it upon anyone. @emilijamak4332 жыл бұрын
@@amystephens513 another mom here, it's less about martyrdom and more about food waste. By my own experience and observations kids need to be trained to eat leftovers and until that training is complete you don't want to waste food that took time, effort, and money to produce. I'll usually take smaller portions than I would normally and finish what my kid doesn't eat. This isn't completely universal as they learn to better understand taking only what they will eat in a sitting and my own knowledge of what they are most likely to eat if I put it in the fridge once they are done with it. Similarly it also depends on the food itself, a dressed salad or cereal in milk get disgusting if allowed to sit around, or if it's say one or two bites left on a plate I really don't need that taking up space in my fridge.

To be honest I think the "that girl" trend is just another trap for women: they have to be perfect, productive, intellectual, feminine. My understanding of “That Girl” has always been someone who is unique, and stands out making people turn their heads. She was not just beautiful, but beautiful on the inside too. She didn’t follow trends, but became a trendsetter and not even intentionally. Whenever I hear this trend I think of the sitcom “That Girl” with Marlo Thomas. She was a big role model for women then, and she always portrayed a positive and independent character for her female fans, to have have their own mind. On top of that she wore beautiful clothes and was stylish, but her personality was likeable and loveable. That’s really what made her stand out, was who her character was on the inside

This trend is weird to me. I know of no one who is successful, productive, and has good mental health who is also heavily into social media. Also, you should never feel bad about not being a morning lark. 11 PM for night owls can be equally as productive as 6 AM for morning larks.

I think the issue with any lifestyle change is trying to immediately make drastic changes. Dont wake up at 7am and run 10k if you've never woken before 10 or been off the sofa during lockdown. Make little gradual changes, eg I have to go up three stories for my work cafeteria for lunch. As much as possible I do the stairs instead of the lift now.

@Oiami-.-2 жыл бұрын
@@kutanra in generell yes to the little steps but at some point that doesn't make a difference anymore, since bodys respond different to our own circadian rhythm hormones (I could elaborate but that would produce way to much text). Which is why some people won't get tired till 1 am and other can't keep themselves awake after 10 pm. This is also tied to what time we are the most productive e.g the brain of a evening person will not be awake and productive at 8 am even if they force themselves into an early every day schedule. The same as an morning person will not be productive anymore at 10 pm.

I'm so glad that you talked about "your fantasy self." I've noticed that there's so many things in the past that I bought (even in the name of being more sustainable) for my fantasy self. Since I learned about that concept I try to tip toe into potential habits without buying something for at least a few months before I take the plunge. For example, I've been bullet journalling for 2 years with pens I already have - it's not as cute, but I wanted to make sure that habit is there before I bought "nice" pens. And even then, I am still experimenting with my own style before I buy more.

Lucky for me I live in South Florida and we have avocado trees growing all over, so I always have local fresh avocados 😊 Also, I find that journaling right before bed is best for me, I keep my journal on my nightstand and that way I am reminded. It also helps to just brain dump before bed, then I feel like I can fall asleep easier. I like to focus on writing down the good things that happened that day for me, and all the things in my life that I am grateful for. It puts me in a good feeling place right before falling asleep, which helps me to wake up in a better feeling place as well. Thank you for speaking up about chickens and how they are bred to produce so many eggs. I think going to the grocery store and buying animal products really puts a barrier between the reality of what animals go through. Also, how much of those animal products are thrown away everyday in grocery stores just makes me feel so sad for the animal that suffered for no reason, but that is a whole other topic for discussion.

On one hand, I think it's great if it gets people to drink water, take better care of themselves and work towards their goals. On the other hand, I think it perpetuates the idea of what we "should be"/"fantasy self" rather than who we are and what is actually important to us. As these videos are aesthetically pleasing the trend focuses a lot on how we are seen by others rather than if we do feel truly good in ourselves. I have learnt to feel my best I needed to drop a lot of balls and accept that my house will be a mess at times for example because I need to rest and/or do other things that bring me joy. Definitely not aesthetic and something "that girl" does - but at least I feel rested and fulfilled!

Not only do our trends have massive consumerism backing behind them, they're also micro trends. Trends used to last months or sometime years and now they last a couple of weeks and in that very short time span countless people purchased absurd and disgusting amounts of products and then turned around and threw them all away. Also I think it's really important to discuss how avocado toast and eggs is trendy partially because it's so cheap in many places. I can get an avocado for about a dollar and it can last me for a few days and eggs have, until recently, been very cheap. So while I do acknowledge that it's very unsustainable and hypocritical to tout avocados and eggs as purely good in these videos, its also a very nutritionally dense, healthy breakfast that can be cheap and accessible for many people. I think people often forget how class and financial stability overlap with trends and make it hard to discern what's a trend and what's just accessibility while not alienating people who already struggle to make ends meet, let alone eat the expected healthy meals.

I did the declutter thing, but I also paired it with this “no-buy” challenge that I created for myself, which at first was to not buy anything unnecessary for one month. That stretched to two, and now I’m shooting for a year! We’ll see, but I’m excited about it

Oh, this is something I see a lot of in the journalling community -- something about it had always seemed a little bit off to me, and I think you really nailed down some of the things that had been wiggling in the back of my head on this. The romanticism towards it isn't always bad but...for someone with mental illness, it's so much work for so little payoff lol. I'm glad you posted this, as I never really thought about the sustainability side of things. Thanks, this was fun and informative! 🌱

Seeing you work out was actually really inspiring. I haven’t been as active since I started working more and honestly since the beginning of the Panera lockdowns. Since it’s been so long since I have been inside a gym at this point it’s super intimidating. Even when I would go I would often feel a bit lost. I forget that I really enjoy workouts that rely on body movements, versus equipment. I sometimes feel like I gotta do something special to work out. I forget that the best exercise feels natural and fun. Anyway I’m planning on setting aside 10 minutes of stretching and aerobics in the morning, and gradually increasing the duration.

I also struggle with journaling & topics. When I remember to journal, my main topic the last few years has consistently been "3 things my husband did right today". Big things, little things. I think in our culture, we're just as quick to throw away relationships as we are things. It's hard to break free from my own negative mindset, but I'm a better partner when I'm intentionally appreciating the best of him.

What I take from that girl trend is yes i should make looking after myself more routine even if it's more weekly than daily. I've never noticed the brands, the closest is I've drawn measurements on my glass water bottle to try to keep try of my water intake and encourage me hydrating

You actually can stop your chickens from laying. At the sanctuary I used to work at we did it for rescue chickens that dealt with prolapse and other laying problems. It's a little implant that's essentially like birth control. Pretty easy and harmless.

I've never followed trends, or even be aware of them half the time (or I'm super late to the party), and honestly it has probably saved me so much money. While I'm now much more conscious of what I buy, in the past I know it would have been so easy for me to be influenced to buy what I don't really need (so probably a very good thing I didn't have social media when I was a teen). I hate things like 'that girl' (which I'd never heard of til this video thank goodness), as it holds the average person to an impossible standard. You mentioned how the routine took hours, which the majority of people won't have. Alongside that, the food and clothing choices, etc. But the worst thing is when someone inevitably fails at being 'that girl', they feel like failures which is not good for anyone's mental health. I feel most adults have learned to understand the difference between what we want to do, and what is feasible for our lives (yes, many of us need to work on balancing the 2, but I think most of us manage okay), but I worry about teenagers and younger people who don't understand why they can't follow this routine, or why they aren't enjoying it, which is unnecessary mental health stress. While I will never say social media is bad (it has literally saved my life multiple times), I do wish there was less comparing and more compassion.

“THAT GIRL” routine seems to be sooo stressful!!! Who the heck has so much time in the morning or throughout the day to do all of THIS?! This is absolutely insane! It makes people feel like they are not enough! Oh my goodness, it’s just too much! Even though there are some good points but to do that daily for most of us is pretty much impossible. Thank you for sharing 🙏😊
@Lady-Seashell-Bikini2 жыл бұрын
That's my main issue with this routine. It's not just that it's unsustainable for the environment, but it's also unsustainable for your daily life. Eventually, you will get burned out, and you'll just go back to your old habits feeling worse than when you started. There is no one routine for everyone, and everyone needs to do what best fits their lifestyles.

This is an AWESOME video. I'm not really attracted to the "that girl" trend, but I've identified with the dark/light academia before it was a trend (I believe we called it nerdiness). In true true capitalistic✨fantasy girl✨ fashion, I've been tempted to change my ways to emulate what's promoted on the internet. But the major tripping point that slows me down enough to reconsider consumerism is that I am a huge supporter of libraries for many reasons. I'm not on TikTok and don't know the trends, but this is great video to get us to slow down and actually consider if we are making choices for ourselves or are we just following everyone else. I'd love to see more of these. I feel like cottage core should be sustainable, but has been co-opted by consumerism. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The shift you make from what the trend really is important. It gives proper credit to all who through out the times has lived sustainably. Before letting the frustration turn into resentmentI we should try and remind ourselves that (filming) this routine IS these women's work. This helps me at least to find a better balance :)

Thank you so much for talking about how chickens' bodies are abused in our food systems! I rescued some chickens from an egg farm and even in that so called" free range" egg farm, they were crammed into a tight barn that had only artificial light and barely any room to move. There were dead chicken lying on the floor and many of the chickens had broken legs because they're bred to be so heavy that sometimes they can't move. "Free range" is just a marketing gimmick--- they're not in cages, but they're still in horrible conditions and still bred, as you said, to optimize capitalistic production and to be used and then killed when they no longer can produce eggs anymore. It's horrible and none of us should be buying eggs if we can help it (in your case it makes sense because you're trying to make sure the eggs don't go to waste).

This was such an interesting and unique video concept! I generally don't like watching those "that girl" videos because they can sometimes feel kind of shame spiraly, but YOUR version and talking about the different aspects of why these routines aren't sustainable is SO amazing! Ahh shelb! 💚I really loved this vid! You nailed it.. I really appreciated your point of sustainability not being the trend, but consumerism. It’s so obvious once you put it that way.. I never got “those girls” on TikTok who restock the mini fridges in their room with skin care and/or snacks.. like your clear containers are adorable and aesthetic, but it’d be wayyy cooler if they were putting bulk products into those, instead of repackaging single use ones 🥴😅 Also, random idea but I’d love to hear more from you about which major stores are the best at handling their waste products or returns.. I know you’ve ranked most sustainable brands, but I’d love to know.. is shopping at Marshall’s or Ross slightly more sustainable since it’s getting a second chance at being sold? kinda like that Amazon return place you visited recently, or is that just how it used to be? Are there known places that always are diligent to to donate their returns, rather than trashing/destroying them? I love learning from your dumpster diving days (been there too lol)..but I’m so curious on a larger scale if ANY big box stores are handling their waste in a positive way. Kinda like the electronic take back systems at Best Buy or Goodwill. Down stream waste is such a major sustainablity factor that gets over looked so often.. 👍 🌎 💗 P.S. you are looking so healthy and happy recently, you go girl!! I live in Austin and have been following since your makeup tutorial days💕.. When y’all make make the move back this way, I’d love to meet up with you and Madison sometime. It’s just so wonderful getting to know other like minded folks, and I think we have tons in common. My inbox is always open if you’d like a new friend! Def out of my comfort zone to say that, but I’ve been wanting to for years now, and who knows since y’all hang with Bailey lol😆😋 hope to hear from you! -Rachel

Also as someone with ADHD, my executive functioning issues are way too entrenched to even attempt to make any dramatic lifestyle changes and unless there’s an extremely awesome reason to do so, the novelty alone will not make the habit stick. I’ve learned to just do what I like and what feels good and gently nudge myself in directions I want (eg sustainability)

This was a super interesting video topic, Shelbi (with some suburb editing, I might add)! I feel like this trend is geared towards women in college, because that's the only category of person I can think that would have this amount of time for such an extensive routine. Also, because I've just been getting into going to the gym, working out every day is not sustainable, your body legitimately needs rest, especially if your goal is to build muscle. On the whole, this trend is unsustainable in terms of the planet, time, and potentially for your mental and physical health.
