After one of his earliest breakthroughs, Hawking is diagnosed with ALS, and he becomes less and less able to control his own body. With the loyal Jane at his side, he continues his work. For that ending scene, you can also think of it like his black hole concept. In the movie, he proves that you can find the beginning of the universe by winding back the clock. By showing his whole life in reverse, ending with the scene where Stephen first met Jane, you can say that his universe began when he met her. It's so romantic.

Exactly. It took me a few times of watching that whole reverse thing at the end to realize this, back when I first watched the movie. When he says "Look what we made," he means, "Look, we created a universe." Their universe: their family. Throughout the whole movie the basis of their difference is that they believe in different theories of how the universe was created. And Stephen's entire theory, as you summarized, is that if you reverse time all the way back to the beginning of the universe, you can prove that time had a beginning. This scene of reversal at the end of the movie is a brief analogy of that theory: his entire life reverses to the space time singularity that began it: when he saw her. That's when the universe began, and it ended with them, here, in the garden, surrounded by nature, beauty, and their family.

Stephen was a good man. He was very fortunate to see his kids grow up and have kids of their own. The disease didn't stop him from living his life and doing what he loved to do. Stephen hoped that someday they do find a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease but he doubted they would find it in his lifetime. He did fund research for the people who are trying to develop treatment and a cure for Lou Gehrig's disease.

+Alexander Edward Pytko I don't disagree with everything you've said here, but I've heard from people who've met him in person that he's kind of a douche. A friend of mine works as a check-in assistant at an airport and said that while they were trying to get him into his seat on a plane he was very rude and they were amazed to hear how many swear words are programmed into his speech device. It's understandable - I mean, he's very old now and the fact he's basically unable to move must cause a lot of frustration and anger to build up, but I also understand he wasn't very nice to Jane. I don't know the full story, but she said there were points in their marriage when she felt suicidal. This is a still a beautiful scene though.

To fill the shoes of Stephen Hawking is a hard enough task, he not only did it, he was fantastic at it. He definitely deserved his Oscar for this role. I mean, wow. Eddie Redmayne, what a remarkable actor, and Stephen Hawking, what an amazing man.

Just saw this movie in its entirety last night..what a marvelous piece of film. I love this ending. Almost had me in tears.. Love us the strongest emotion we have. I remember the scene in the movie where Felicity is speaking with the man who portrayed Stephen's father, before the wedding. He said something to her like "it's not going going to be easy, you know." And she said, "I know I don't look like a strong person but I love him.". And she did. They were married for 30 years. You can't give your devotions to someone for that long if you didn't love them.

I love film but one genre I can't seem to like is romance, and I wasn't aware that this movie revolved around that. Throughout the movie I was aware of what was going on and I thought "Oh my god, am I really watching this?" When it got to this scene and the sound of the guitar started I knew the credits were about to roll. No. It shows the flashback of everything that they went through and you know what I focused on? Their love, and how knowing what took events earlier in the film (when she confesses her love for the other guy.....sorry for spoiling it) I started crying, CRYING! Call me a p**** but damn that really caught me off guard.

I remember that I watched this movie at school, almost four years ago. I also remember how I felt at the end of it: I felt extremely well, full of positive energy, and grateful for everything I had in my life 🌌

By December 1977, Jane had met organist Jonathan Hellyer Jones when singing in a church choir. Hellyer Jones became close to the Hawking family, and by the mid-1980s, he and Jane had developed romantic feelings for each other. According to Jane, her husband was accepting of the situation, stating "he would not object so long as I continued to love him." Jane and Hellyer Jones determined not to break up the family and their relationship remained platonic for a long period. By the 1980s, Hawking's marriage had been strained for many years. Jane felt overwhelmed by the intrusion into their family life of the required nurses and assistants. The impact of his celebrity was challenging for colleagues and family members, while the prospect of living up to a worldwide fairytale image was daunting for the couple. Hawking's views of religion also contrasted with her strong Christian faith and resulted in tension. In the late 1980s, Hawking had grown close to one of his nurses, Elaine Mason, to the dismay of some colleagues, caregivers and family members, who were disturbed by her strength of personality and protectiveness. Hawking told Jane that he was leaving her for Mason and departed the family home in February 1990. After his divorce from Jane in 1995, Hawking married Mason in September, declaring "It's wonderful - I have married the woman I love." I hope they make this sequel!

im in absolute awe at this scene, how everything begins to go back in time recapping at all the emotional scenes that have occured. it really makes you see everything they've been through only to lead up to where they are now. it's sad and beautiful at the same time.

This scene was very profound for me. My Dad was diagnosed with a mental illness growing up, and I slowly watched him (mentally) disappear in front of me. The body didn't die, but the Father withered away. Watching this scene made me see that more from his perspective though. The loss and pain he must of gone through. And gave me much more empathy instead of pain, anger and grief. Nothing to do with Stephen's specific illness, but still so relevant.

This scene always brings tear to my eyes. We all interpret it differently, to me; no matter how f*cked up life can be, everything good we've ever done, every memory, experience, we don't lose them. And better yet, we can always "wind back the clock" every time we close our eyes
