This scene has always reminded me of the scene in The Sopranos (I think at the end of season 1) where Junior's been arrested and the Feds give him a chance to say that he was just a figurehead and Tony was really running things, but he just mocks Tony instead. The pride, contempt, resentment, and residual loyalty felt by the veteran towards the protege who screwed him over are equally well encapsulated in Glenn's final words about Ollie. Really funny and really moving.

His work in this and then in Grandma’s House (as the fabulous “Clammy” Clive Freeman, alongside Rebecca Front again incidentally) are two of my favourite comedy performances. “I AM A MAN!” As an aside Clive is definitely what would have happened to Glenn had he accidentally killed a homeless man On Green Lane in Ilford and then become an alcoholic. I kind of see Glenn and Clive as existing as the same person, just on different time/space continuums.

@Dora11386 жыл бұрын
Well, technically Malcolm wanted Ollie to make Glenn leak a PIECE of the email chain, not the whole stuff. The goal was to compromise Nicola Murray (leader of the opposition in s4) and put her out to pasture... to drink milk with the cows, presumably. The whole point of Malcolm's s4 arc was to get rid of Nicola and replace him with the party big shot (Dan Miller), because Nicola was hopeless, politically inept. A quiet bat-person. Glummy mummy. Just to quote the most popular ones. She ended up leader at the exact same moment that the universe blinked. You should really watch the whole thing, though. :)

To be fair, Malcolm had actually broken the law by acquiring and leaking Tickel's medical records in an attempt to make the government look bad. Peter, Ollie, Terri and Glen did too by lying during the inquiry but evidence of this didn't seem to be available.
@breacat3 жыл бұрын
Malcolm said Ollie wouldn't last 18 months in his job. So in the end its a pyrrhic victory for him. Nobody won anything by the end, but this is the game they chose to play.
@HamburgerTime2094 жыл бұрын
Who actually did the leak? I don’t remember (the leak being Mr Tickle’s medical records or something I think?)
@Darkstar2633 жыл бұрын
The main reason Malcolm was in trouble was that he was found in possession of Mr Tickel's National Insurance number and his NHS number. The fact that Malcolm had the NHS number meant that he had obtained access to Mr Tickel's medical records. It's unknown if he genuinely wanted to help Mr Tickel. When Nicola was the party leader, she wasn't willing to call the Government out on what they were doing to him. It's possible the records were leaked just to make the government look bad.
@amosungar52483 жыл бұрын
@TheRealRogerEbert The way I always understood it is Manion only leaked the fact that the records were obtained illegally - he wasn't the one who did it. In fact that could almost upgrade him from a leak to a whistleblower (although of course he only did it to get the heat off him). Generally speaking, Manion comes off as a guy with a pretty sound moral compass and dignity (which is strange to say of a Tory-in-all-but-name, but hey, that's part of what makes this show interesting). He is incompetent in a lot of ways, but he really does dislike the more "slimey" aspects of politics (see: the whole Nicola's daughter story).
