5:34: Fun fact: The shadow is that of a member of the film crew. Carpenter didn't want anybody to be able to figure out who it was so in that scene he didn't use any of the actors.

BEST SCI FI HORROR MOVIE OF ALL TIME! The film was a box office and critical disappointment making $19 million dollars against a $15 million dollar budget, as it was released two weeks after ET, The Extra Terrestrial. Critics tore it apart, calling "dull, boring and a wretched excess", as well as being "one hell of an antidote for ET." Roger Ebert gave it "a great barf bag movie," giving 2/4 stars. The Dog Kennel Sequence was done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Stan Winston, after Rob Bottin fell ill with a bleeding ulcer and heat exhaustion after he ate and drank Snickers bars and Coca Cola every day until he got the make-up and character effects right. The sound of The Thing when it transforms are that of alligators, bears, crocodiles, rattlesnakes, horses, pigs squealing, and human screams played backwards or slowed down to make it sound otherworldly. It has been regarded as one of the best Sci-fi Horror Thriller Films ever made as well as being one of John Carpenter's best movies ever made.

The dynamics of how united the critics were in panning this film - and how wildly wrong they were (at the time & in retrospect) is an interesting phenomenon. Rob Ager, who has created a great many analysis videos of this film (On KZbin & on his own channel) speculates that it was this film's a) relentless "approach-of-doom" feeling, coupled with b) the super-repulsive, intentionally gory practical effects. That combo was something that the critics simply couldn't deal with, and panned the film. This wasn't the first time that an ahead-of-its-time horror film suffered this fate: In 1960, critics came down so hard on the film "Peeping Tom" that its director had to leave the country (England) to continue to find work. (15+ years later, efforts by Martin Scorsese led to that film's critical re-evaluation.)

The creature got to the stored blood cause Windows had the keys and dropped them. Windows and Bennings carried the frozen body from the Norwegian base to that storeroom. Windows left Bennings alone, then the body came alive under the blanket. When Windows came back and saw Bennings being eaten, he dropped the keys he had from Gary and ran to tell the others. You can actually hear the keys drop on the floor. It’s easy to miss. Then they all catch and burn fake Bennings That’s also why he runs away and tries to get a shotgun. He knew he fucked up.

It drives me completely crazy that almost every movie reaction on KZbin starts with the channel owners constantly asking “Why is he doing this?” or “What's happening here?”. You watch movies to find out. If everything was explained in the opening sequence or in the first part of the movie, the rest of the movie would be totally boring.

The movie is from 1982 and hasn't lost a bit of its gruesome suspense. 😱 John Carpenter's (“Halloween”) cleverly tricked-out remake of a 50s story by John W. Campbell is fantastic. The music was composed by Ennio Morricone.

What were they there researching? The treaty that governs Antarctica allows for "research stations" however this was the Cold War so most bases were there as part of the Cold War game. In practice there was a lot of cooperation between the local representatives of the powers. The US maintained McMurdo as the main hub of activity, open to all, and the Soviets ran ice breakers year-round to let supply ships through. It's a "Thing" thing.

My theory on why Windows thought he might be "infected" was because if you pay attention in the previous scene, Windows was holding Norris' mouth open while Doc was doing CPR. And since this can spread through saliva, I think Windows was afraid maybe him touching Norris, who was a thing, would make him infected.

whats more dark is that when Bennings was attacked by the First thing, it got a hold of him. when they pull the alarm, Bennings was running but it was the Thing controlling him, and till his hand was deformed. Half of Bennings would have been inside there, the Imitation Process was not done, so Bennings was STILL in there.

When the Thing imitates someone, it perfectly duplicates every cell with such precision than it actually retains the memories, knowledge, and personality of the individual it copies. Norris (the guy who’s chest bursts open, chopping off the doctor’s hands with its bear-trap teeth) had a bad heart, and likely a peacemaker. When the Thing took him over and perfectly imitated him, it also faithfully recreated his heart defect, but not his pacemaker, which eventually caused Norris to suffer a heart attack for real during a high-stress moment. The Thing would have been happy to hide itself in a presumably “dead” body, but it couldn’t tolerate the electro-shocks from the defibrillator and was thus forced to reveal itself. Of course, the amazing scene where Norris’ head separates from his burning body, slides onto the floor, and pulls itself away, transforming into a crab/spider with his upside-down head as its body, and tries to crawl away unnoticed, is an iconic moment! (Incidentally, at the beginning of the movie, the spaceship was flying erratically because the crew was desperately trying to fight off the Things that were aboard their vessel and causing havoc. That’s why the spaceship attempted to make an emergency landing on the nearest planet and ended up crash landing in the Antarctic. Only one of the Things as survived the crash and made it out of the ship alive, only to freeze in the ice.)

I'm not sure there's any need to invent plot that there's no evidence or necessity for, such as, "pace-makers" - Bill Lancaster wrote a much more direct and sophisticated screenplay, than that. A million people drop dead, every day, from various defects, that not even they knew they had. There's no need for a, "pacemaker" - Norris, was just imperfect: misprogrammed with inevitable destiny - and his imperfection and predestiny were, perfectly, duplicated.

I enjoyed your reaction! Thanks. There's discussion on the Internet as to how to interpret the last scene, with lots of theories. For instance, one theory holds that Childs is the thing because Mac's breath is highly visible in the cold, but Childs' is not. The dog was a half Husky half wolf named Jed who appeared in several movies. There are a few videos on KZbin in which Richard Masur (Clark) talks about him.

With the estimated population of the world in 1982, Blair's calculation of 27,000 hours is 170,839.75633333... People assimilated per hour. That's how fast The Things would spread in populated areas. What Blair-Thing was building is NOT a space ship. More like a rocket-sled to get far enough away from the camp quickly enough that the others can't follow. Possibly just enough to drop into the ocean, and assimilate the whole ecosystem.

Even if you didn't know that it was a horror film (let's say you thought it was merely a mystery film), there are questions that a reasonable person would ask, if the thinking part of their brain were active: "He's shooting at a dog... in Antarctica... from a helicopter. We can't be certain, but it looks like one person is acting as pilot while the other one is shooting, so it's a two-man team working together. That means cooperation, which greatly reduces the likelihood that it's insanity. It's ••Antarctica•• which is very hard to get to - which rules out the possibility that it's "Good 'old Boys" looking for kicks on a Friday night. Therefore, this has to be something else. What?" The husky-thing's cuteness overwhelms people's critical thinking and distorts the situation: Dog-Good, Humans-Bad. Like with Psycho and with the Star Wars films, nothing is what it appears to be.

Good analysis, Maya. Many people focus on the "gross effects", but the actual point of the film (and the book it's based on) is paranoia. The psychological horror of not knowing if you can trust the people around you. THAT is the real horror. (And that is the reason the film ends without showing if either Childs or MacReady is still human...which some viewers hate...lol)

1. The Norwegian killed himself so the thing couldn't get to him. 2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄 They had to eliminate the helicopter. 3. You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects showcased here. 4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self-defense. 5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face.😲 6. Their fate is left arbitrary on purpose. Maybe it's best they all die. 7. They're re-making this sans Carpenter and Russell. 8. Another Russell/Carpenter product you need to first time/share with us is "Escape from New York". PS: Windows/Thomas G. Waites also played Fox in "The Warriors".

The giveaway at the end that Childs may be the Thing: He's wearing a different coat from the time he split off from the rest, the Thing tears through the hosts clothes. His eyes are purposely shot at a camera angle to try to keep all reflection of light out of his eyes, the window of the soul. And last my favorite, they replaced all the alcohol you see his Jim Beam Bottle empty before he conducts the test, he has it filled with gasoline/kerosene to be molotovs which they were using at the end. MacCready hands "Childs" the alcohol. The Thing, never having tasted actual alcohol before can't distinguish between alcohol and gas/kerosene. MacCready smiles and chuckles because he knows he's doomed, he gave it all the end in a Stalemate where the Thing just has to outwait him.

My only complaint of this movie is the opening stupid UFO crash landing. Was unneeded by John Carpenter and ruined a surprise element of the plot. Could've been a 10/10 psychological, Horror, mystery.

As far as Blair being infected yes he was. It happened during the autopsy of the Alien Dog. He was infected because he touched the pen to his mouth during the autopsy.

That was an oversight on Carpenter's part... Also, if you look closely, he doesn't ACTUALLY touch the tip to the imitation NOR his mouth, just very closely. But, that is not how he was taken over. Plus, the whole, single cell theory, is not something that is ever proven to be a viable method for assimilation. Both movies had ONLY shown the "violent takeover" assimilation method, i.e. attacking by ripping through your clothes and slowly absorbing you, while then forming its own imitation of the taken over host. The small particle/single cell theory just doesn't make ANY sense, as why on earth would it EVER choose the other way, when it could've taken over that ENTIRE camp in just a day or so, by secretly and stealthily brushing across or touching each person one by one. Fuchs only brought it up because they still had no idea how it worked and were simply just being SUPER precautious and overly safe. That would definitely be the smartest way to approach it. But again, it doesn't mean that was an actual method it could infect someone.

I am consistently surprised by The Thing reaction videos where a girl/women worries about someone shooting at a dog, like it's the worst thing that can possibly happen. Have some sense of cinema for god's sake. This is the most basic of things. Foreshadowing.

***3 SOLID REASONS WHY CHILDS IS THE THING:*** #1 - Childs Jacket Swap When McReady and the two men go to give the Doc the blood test out in the shack, they leave Childs (wearing a Blue jacket) alone to guard the door. There are 3 jackets on hooks on the wall behind Childs with the colours of the jackets being Blue, Green and Beige. When the Thing kills you, it rips your clothes apart and when you see the same room several minutes later, the jacket colours have been changed to Beige, Green and Green. Note there are also other jackets hanging on the left and right of the room, thus allowing the Thing to make the swap and unknowingly return 3 ‘out of sync' colour jackets to the same wall. Childs is shown wearing a Green jacket in the final 2-minutes of the film with McReady, not his original Blue jacket when he was last seen guarding the door, hence Childs is the Thing. #2 - Childs Breathing The last 2-minutes of dialogue out in the freezing cold between McReady and Childs clearly shows the steam McReady makes as a human when he breathes. But Childs makes no steam at all when he breathes because he is non-human and either has the same temperature inside his body as outside, or is mimicking breathing, hence Childs is the Thing. #3 - Childs First Drink When sitting down in the snow at the very end of the film, McReady hears a faint creek of wood behind him and half raises a bottle to his mouth. The 'drink' McReady later passes to Childs is a Molotov cocktail (many Molotov’s were just thrown to set the research station on fire) and after drinking the gasoline, Childs has NO REACTION and makes NO COMMENT. A human would either not drink from the bottle because of the smell, or would spit the gasoline out immediately, but the Thing has no reference to the smell or taste of ANY fluid and as a result 'outs' itself. McReady smiles, laughs a little to himself about the Thing failing his second test (the first was the blood test) and rests his head down knowing the dire situation he finds himself in and he has been checkmated like the computer chess game he played in earlier in the film, hence Childs is the Thing. Conclusion: At the end of the film McReady and the Thing are seated next to each other out in the freezing cold with McReady NOT ‘waiting to see what happens next...', but unfortunately for him, KNOWING ‘what happens next...’.

Ugh..... These have all been debunked... There's no excuse for people to still think these are true... The whole point of the ending was to be 100% ambiguous... That means NO evidence exists that explicitly proves Childs' is the thing. It's all left to interpretation. Childs IS breathing, the lighting is just not a bright behind him, as it is for Mac, but you can see it. Plus, the scene with Bennings-Thing proves otherwise when he roars before getting burned. It's a PERFECT IMITATION. Perfect means exactly that. It is exactly like a human in every way. The jacket is the same color, it's just once again, different lighting and the frost covering the jacket make it appear slightly different in color. The jackets changing position, while never actually confirmed by Carpenter, seems to simply be a continuity oversight than anything. And as far as Childs taking a drink. You not taking into consideration that his opinion towards Mac had completely reversed once he proved that he knew what he was doing with the blood test and was no longer hostile towards him. You also have to take into consideration that, at that point, they are already as good as dead. I highly doubt he was worried about drinking from someone else's drink. If Mac was a thing, that would be the least of his worries; and if Childs was a thing and wanting to infect Mac by transfer of cells on the bottle, why even go that route, it's just them, he could take him over right there. Plus the small particle theory was never actually proven, just something that Fuchs had mentioned to be super safe and overly cautious. But in the movie, we only see the "violent takeover" method, so we have to assume that is the only way it can assimilate someone. The bottle is not a Molotov, it's alcohol. You can see by the J&B label on it. All of the Molotovs they used through the whole movie were all devoid of labels. He also raises his bottle to take a drink BEFORE he heard Childs coming, therefore, it wasn't a rise, he was literally just about to take a drink. I mean, this is all super easy to comprehend stuff. But, I'm just way beyond tired of seeing comments on ever Thing reaction, making the claim about Childs' breath, especially because even if you couldn't SEE it for whatever reason, the scene with Bennings proves otherwise and I don't understand why people can't seem to understand the concept of "Perfect Imitation". That means, it gets your personality, your decision making, your memories, behaviors, EVERYTHING. It's not like it's something that is debatable, lol 😂

@@FilthTribeFTP The single cell thing is canon. It's just the least efficient way to do it. It would take 45 iterations of assimilation to completely change a human body over, and that doesn't account for any possible delayer, such as the victim realizing he's being assimilated part-way thru or outside interference. Papers from 2023 estimate 36 trillion cells in an average male, with is exactly 45 iterations of halving. It would be way, WAY faster to just wrap something up in tentacles or pull a large, ideally commanding part of a body into a Thing and assimilate that way. I read background treatments a long time ago that said Blair was taken by food contaminated outside the bottom of the can during the time skip that happens in the film between him being put out there and them checking again. A clue in the film is the unused noose. Also, there's a video game that's supposed to be canon. It takes place after this film and establishes that Childs died a human from exposure, and Mac actually survived.

@@BeastOfWarZ lol... Bro, I am completely aware that there is much more media and reading material beyond just the 1982 movie. I know the video game goes the route of saying that Childs was human all long, etc. But, I'm not going off of any other "lore", except what we know from John Carpenter's 1982 version of *The Thing* Not to say that I am against the expanded universe; hell, I actually really LIKE the 2011 prequel... But, It's (everything outside of the 1982 movie) not what I would really consider "Canon". There's no rule set that is followed, and certain aspects end up contradicting other aspects, but I still very much enjoy it for what it is. For example, the 2002 PS2 game... I personally agree with the answer that Childs was human, but when considering just the 1982 movie, the ending is ambiguous and the answer is merely subjective. I don't go around telling other people that they are wrong for believing Childs was an imitation, because there is NO right answer. That was the way it was SUPPOSED to be. It was never MEANT to be answered. We are also discussing the 1982 movie in this comment section, because that was the movie reacted to. Therefore, it is really the only thing that matters. Basing the discussion on anyone outside of this movie, is irrelevant....
