What's wild is the dude who made the practical effects, Rob Bottin, was only 22/23 at the time. Iirc he had to be hospitalized for exhaustion towards the end of production, and his mentor had to finish it up. The dude also did effects for the OG Robocop and Total Recall movies, Se7en, Fight Club, Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas, and others. Dude is a legend

Always amusing when reactors pick up on the Among Us connection. Among Us was primarily based on this movie and the tabletop game Mafia. Back in the late 90s we used to play a game based on this in the original Starcraft.

This was Keith David's 1st real role. He was in Disco Godfather as an extra, but this was his 1st real role. He's excellent in this and near everything I've seen him in. He also says of all of his roles, this is the one strangers come up to him asking about. I'll also say this film does not dislike the 2 black characters: Nauls was the last to be killed and we simply do not know about Childs, though after decades thinking He's a Thing, i no longer believe that and think he's human. Childs was smart in this movie, very cautious more so than the rest with exception to MacReady.

People, without fail, make fun of the Norwegian shooting from the helicopter, saying he is bad at shooting and it drives me up the wall each time. For one, shooting a moving from a moving helicopter is actually pretty difficult, you'd have to be a professional marksman, which the Norwegian likely isn't. Secondly, its the Antarctic, very cold, your hands would be freezing and fine motor function in your fingers would be greatly diminished. On top of that he was wearing gloves (which don't fully help in this cold) which would make handling the rifle awkward. And he was wearing those special goggles, the light reflected from the snow can be intense enough to ruin your sight, so you need those glasses but they would make aiming a rifle even harder. By all accounts it's a very difficult shot to make. On a more funny note, Mac wasn't wrong, the chess wizard computer did actually cheat if you reference the board with the move she announced. Clearly it was broken and Mac was totally justified in how he chose to the the game.

@@Jhyad wasn't trying to be intense or rude, certainly not to you specifically, it's just a constant I've observed in reactions to this movie and finally felt like sharing, sorry if it came across differently. I suppose on the other hand most people immediately side with the dog in that scene and just want to mock the Norwegian. Anyway glad you enjoyed the movie.

Even if the Norwegian had hit the dog-Thing, it wouldn't have made any difference. Look at all the bullets Mac shot at it in the dog cage; it had no effect. The Thing can only be killed by fire or acid. (Or the grenade, had the guy not let it slip out of his hand when he threw it.) Gotta love the debates this movie stirs up. Truly one of the best sci-fi horrors of all time.

The chess scene: a closer analysis shows that the computer WAS losing to MacReady, and it changed colors and moved MacReady's pieces in order to win.
@robindude8187
@robindude8187 10 ай бұрын
That's... not correct. We see the chess board two times. If you look at the earlier chess screen and then the later one a few second after, there is no combination of legal chess moves that will get you from the first to the second. So it's impossible to say what's going on. Further, if you listen to the voice, before he says it's "starting to lose it", it mentions "Knight to Rook 3", yet a moment later when you see the screen, there is no knight on any rook 3, nor is there any legal move on either screen that could have led there. It then _correctly_ mentions "King to Rook 1", which is the move MacReady made, and then says "Rook to Knight 6" and declares checkmate. The problem is, from that second position, that move isn't checkmate. More than that, there isn't a move at that point that would _lead to_ checkmate. If you think that the computer played white and moved MacReady's rook to Knight 6, that _also_ isn't checkmate for either side, no matter how it's counting, _and_ it's not a legal chess move, MacReady's rook, in the second image, being in Queen 1. If you take it from the _first_ image we have instead, while MacReady _can_ move King to Rook 1, there's no legal Rook to Knight X move, and no Rook to Knight X move would lead to checkmate. Thus we are left with the unanswered question: Did the game cheat, or is MacReady just a sore loser? My money is on sore loser, since it fits his eventual decision to burn the place to the ground. A "you're not beating me" mentality, and going for the nuclear option.

He's not a terrible shot. Hes shooting at a moving smaller than man sized target from a moving platform, while trying to use a SCOPE. Which, is borderline a hinderence for this kind of shot. You could get a top rated Marine Sniper and it would be a miracle to make that shot,. I dunoo if you have ever shot a gun, letalone used a scope, but it is not like Call of Duty. I assure you, you can play all the FPS games you want, and if you join the military, it will not help you at all. In fact, it is probably makes it harder, as you have to unlearn all the bad habits you learned.

My favorite horror movie. I cant think of a worse scenario to find yourself in. Youre battling an intelligent enemy, you dont know if its malicious or simply trying to survive, if it touches you...youre dead, its almost impossible to detect, it can only be killed with fire/acid and if it gets to water or transportation its not just the end of humans but THE ENTIRE WORLD. Every Winter when the wind howls i think of this movie. It inspired me to get a flamethrower cause...you never know 😅

This is a remake of a 1951 movies called "The Thing From Another World." I've watched the 1951 movie many times over many years. It's pretty good. They just didn't have the technology to do the shape shifter thing. For that matter, the 1951 movie was taken from a 1938 story called "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell Jr. Campbell was primarily an editor but would write a story now and then. He was an interesting guy and actually rather important in the history of science fiction, but that's another whole story.

Fn mysteries 😂 are among my favorites, too. There are those who think The Thing (1982) is one of the greatest Movies 🎬 ever made, not just the greatest Horror or Fn Mysteries ever made. There's a prequel made in 2011 that goes by the same name The Thing. I recommend it if nothing else because of the story. It's about the happenings at the Norwegian camp and ends with the helicopter-dog chase that begins this movie. It's not bad, though it draws criticism for used CGI instead of great Practical effects like this one.🙂

It's actually very hard to shoot at a moving target, while you're moving too, while there's a strong wind. Your aim moves easily, the wind is affecting the bullet. Yeah, very hard. Eveyone who reactes to this is saying the same thing, I feel bad for the norwegian 😂

Child's is The Thing. When he drank from the bottle, it was gasoline In the bottle and that was why McCready didn't drink from the bottle. So, Childs is taken over by the thing and McCready freezes to death. I I saw this at a drive-in in 1982 with the remake of Cat People. The Thing was much better. I have also seen this at my local cinema about 10 times between the midnight showings and this film closing out a few Horror marathons .

@@kencoakley3959MacReady was about to drink from the bottle in that scene so it wasnt gasoline. Obviously nothings been confirmed, but my belief is NEITHER are the Thing. Carpenter said the Ps2 game is canon , and both are human in that. I find it more poetic they're both human...suffering in crippling paranoia to the death...but ultimately saving Earth.
