The modern version of the "sadistic gameshow" genre started with another Stephen King novella, "The Long Walk." Much, much darker than the Hunger Games or Battle Royale. There's supposedly an adaptation in work, but I'd guess they'll soften it up a lot.

Thanks guys, really enjoyed this too! There's a meme floating around the net with a shark seeing a guy in a cage and thinking 'oh that poor guy trapped in a cage underwater, don't worry buddy, I'll help you get free!' and swims towards the cage to bite the bars with his teeth lol Brilliant! :D This was the first movie I watched with Richard Dreyfuss and that wonderful laughter he does during the getting drunk scene (he does it a lot in Stakeout 1 and 2 and What About Bob comedies, those are some of my fav comedy movies of all time!) anyway the bonding scene comparing scars and the drunk sing-song, such a good scene (until Jaw(s) turns up! lol Yep, I agree wth the soundtrack, I picture some exec saying "give the teens and shockable grannies some classic Shaw theatre-style dialog to reel them in with some solid 1950s style storytelling scenes, some happy uplifting fantasy adventure music between gore, and we should be able to slide this one under the PG certificate" lol Robert Shaw died barely 50 something! I always thought he was nearing 60 in this movie! I need to watch some of his earlier classics 'The Deep' another Peter Binchley book to movie that I've not seen for example! I just read that Shaw wrote a couple of good novels! Wow and that he was in another movie from a Peter Binchley script called The Deep. I've got some homework maybe to find that one. Oh and thanks for all the editing, movies this big surely take a few edits before they get through the 'net' so yeah thanks for all the hard editing and re-editing work!!

Dystopian gladiatory-sport sci-fi like "The Hunger Games" and "Battle Royal" goes back to a short story "The Seventh Victim" (1953 Robert Scheckley) which was adapted into the Italian movie "The 10th Victim." (1965) Other movies exploring the same idea are "Rollerball" and "Deathrace 2000" (both 1975) "Tron" (1982) and "Tron: Legacy" (2010) "The Salute of the Jugger" (AKA "The Blood of Heroes" 1989) "Star Wars ep 1: The Phatom Mencace" (1999) "Series 7: The Contenders" (2001) "Gamer" (2009) "Thor: Ragnarok" (2017) and "Alita: Battle Angel" (2019) "Gamer" is almost a remake of "The Running Man" updated for the online gaming generation. "The Running Man" also owes as much to the humans-hunting-humans sub-genre of suspense/thriller fiction created by Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game" (1924) which was adapted into several movies and inspired dozens of others including "Hard Target" (1993) and "Surviving The Game" (1994)

Congratulations on 1000 subscribers! As a teen in the 90s, this was one of my favourite movies. I love the one-liners. The stalkers are a bit silly, but the movie is great fun. I'm pretty sure I've read the book by Stephen King (Richard Bachman), because in my teens I read every Stephen King book I could find. I have, however, seen the movie so many times that I can't remember the book anymore. I felt so bad for Kay, the whole film. She literally had the worst day ever. She wakes up and witnesses a creature burst out of her friend. she survives total chaos in a crash, only to see the father of her child die underneath the very personification of Satan's vagina, if Satan was indeed a female..... that creature then crowned out of Satan's vagina and then attacked her. This robot persuaded her into injecting herself with this fluid that would allow for her unborn child to see the sun one day. .... She then goes to sleep, only to awaken to birth this spawn of satan in an egg, then burns through the ship. Crawls back up to feed off of her.... All within the span of what, one hour ???? --- from the time the crash , ring impact, .... she literally had the worst hour and a half of any person in the Alien Franchise.....

Some thoughts and trivia.... Reaction videos to The Thing are GUARANTEED to do one thing. First... "Noooo! Not the dog! Don't hurt the dog!" Twenty minutes later! "Burn it! Burn the dog! No wonder they were trying to shoot it!" The dog was played by Jed the Wolfdog. He also starred in White Fang and The Journey of Natty Gann. Jed was extremely intelligent, and just as good an actor as his human co-stars (or better). He died in 1995 at the age of 18, a very old age for a half-wolf, half Alaskan Malamute. It looks like Mac is being a sore loser when he destroys the chess computer at the beginning. But if you look carefully, you'll see that Mac was right; the computer WAS cheating. In the DVD commentary, John Carpenter says (and I agree) that the moment where Mac says, "We're not getting out of here alive, but neither is that Thing," and the others silently agree, it's a comforting moment in an otherwise grim and bleak movie. Like you noted, at least they can trust each other a bit, and dying to save humanity is a pretty good way to go. My belief: Mac was human. It could go either way with Childs. They'd already stated they shouldn't accept food from anyone else, so it's possible when Mac gives Childs the bottle and Childs takes a pull, Mac knows Childs is a thing, and his little laugh says, "Gotcha." Or maybe Childs is human, and Mac's chuckle says, "Well, we've had a hell of a week, haven't we." Either way, Mac knows he has to kill Childs then burn both of them to be sure, so what else can he do but laugh?
