I like stories like this- they always feel like an old folk tale that's creepy, but actually has a real world purpose. In old Russian folklore for instance, there's a woodland creature named the Selkie, which is a bit like a siren for lakes and streams and ponds and such, that will lure people in and then drown and eat them. It wasn't just scary, it was told to children so that they wouldn't go near water and risk drowning, but more importantly just getting wet in the middle of a Russian winter. Doing so would guarantee you got sick or froze to death before you got home. This story practically feels like a nod towards paying attention for the things that can happen in your house. Maybe if you look, you notice a strangely unconscious pet, nodding towards a carbon monoxide leak that will kill you, or maybe you've been broken into and some things are moved, and someone is lying in wait for you to attack you. Old stories, even the whole "don't eat pork" from the bible (there was no way to cure pork to make it safe to eat like other meats) had more purpose than just to scare people. They were subtleties that kept people safe if they followed them.
@grinningdeathA7x2 жыл бұрын
Selkies r Scottish
@anathemat-0022 жыл бұрын
@@grinningdeathA7x Selkie is a translation for the proper Russian word for the creature I'm talking about. They're also called Rusalka but selkie came to mind first. Plus, the word Selkie is used for much of the Slavic region because I've also found it used in Norse and Irish folklore, which is pretty neat.

I enjoyed this one. The backrooms lore has become so saturated with video game-type levels, hundreds of entity species, 'proven' no-clip guides, and that stupid-a** almond water. So I appreciate any minimalistic take on the situation of being stuck in the backrooms. The original essence (isolation, monotony, loneliness, unknown predator) is what fascinates me most and is well described in this story. And there's a good gradual buildup of dread and fear.
