Everyone talking about how sad this is, Ben Grimm never got tired of life, never gave up and never left his only family alone. If it's sad, then surely it's bittersweet, knowing that for four millenia, he kept watch over his godson, and made sure that he was taken care of, while also helping the city he had served for so long continue to thrive, inspiring hundreds of generations. Ben Grimm died with his family beside him, even his best friend had managed to be there, even if Ben didn't know it.

I thought it was beautiful. The mental fortitude, the contributions to society, the painful loss because it happened. You don’t get to see such portrayals of long lived people like this.

What a shitty delusional and out of touch take. They are sad because the character they grew to love died. They lost a friend, even if it is one from reading a story. You can be happy for a character and sad for yourself at the same time you Neanderthal. It is a loss, they wanted more, they have seen the end of a Thing they cherished. What a human pile of trash.

The best part of this was not just showing Ben's long life and how he lived it, but just how much Reed cares about him. All of this was just to be sure his friend would have a decent life, learning just how long he would live. And discovering how precious his time with him was.

I've seen a lot of people say immortality or long life is a curse. Bittersweet to see a story nail it so well
@ryang2573
@ryang2573 Жыл бұрын
Really depends on the nature of the immortality, I think. Immortality where you just remain hale and hearty forever but you're still constrained by the normal limitations of human memory seems like it'd be the best deal. Eventually, you'd forget things - good and bad - so it's not as if you would run out of things to do and eventually everything would be new to you again. Immortality where you remember everything though would be awful. Imagine watching every single friend and loved one you know growing old and dying, over and over again, and all that sense of loss never going away. I feel like eventually you'd either become a sociopath or go insane from the unending grief. The only way I could see someone staying grounded would be if they started some sort of dynasty and presided over it as an immortal patriarch through the centuries.
@housewilma4904

it all depends on if your alone or not if there other immortals who can survive with you it becomes a blessing but to live eternal among mortals is to accept a never ending cycle of heartbreak recovery and relapse.

This kind of glosses over why this is the culmination of that storyline. It started with Reed encountering a "council of Reeds" (standard multiversal circle jerk) who basically promise him his wildest science dreams...if he abandons his family to work with them. A lot of things go down (seriously, Hickman's run was amazing) and the council accidentally unleash some mad Celestials that wipe the floor with them. There's a bunch of big damn hero moments that culminates in the arrival of grown up Franklin and Valeria. It's never explicitly stated, but the implication is that the one thing that makes 616 Reed special...is that he's actually a father (as imperfect as he is) and will manage to raise a sane and stable Franklin to reach the fullness of his powers. Even afterwards, Reed is still worried about his legacy (hence wanting to see the fate of the Future Foundation,) but the trip reinforces that its not his inventions that make his legacy (you can tell how his interest shifts to Ben), but the PEOPLE he touched. And so the story ends, not with a triumphant battle or new discovery, but with Reed Richards sitting down...and being a friend.

Taking into account the amount of time he actually aged, of one week per year, Ben would have aged 76 years and 48 weeks. Depending on how old he was when he became the Thing, that's still an impressive lifespan at somewhere between 96 and 106 years old at the time of his death.

The thing that keeps the Fantastic 4 relevant isn't the Earth shaking fights and amazing battles against cosmic foes. Its the interactions between 4 people by all means should not be around one another, but have bonds that are unshakeable. Ben & Reed, Reed & Sue, Sue & Johnny, and Johnny and Ben, just seeing them navigate life with the complications they have makes their story ever endearing.

In the end, I’m glad Reed, Johnny, and Sue were always inspiring Ben to be as great of a hero, father, and man. And even though this comic was written before they made Valeria technically canon, you know he would’ve been there for her, too. Quoting Reed, looking up to Johnny (but never admitting it) and hailing Sue as the greatest mother and friend he and Reed’s kids could’ve ever asked for. Even if he’d never know, I’m glad reed could’ve been there at his end, just like I KNOW Ben would’ve been there for all of theirs including Valeria. At least Ben and Franklin would’ve had each other to rely on, but I feel bad for Franklin. He’d never have a friend like that after Ben passes.

Got to say, neat little details here and there throughout the comic for those who are familiar with the Fantastic Four or Marvel as a whole. Like how in 3012 alongside Franklin and Ben there's a guy with powers not unlike the Human Torch, no doubt a descendant of Johnny, along with a gal whose outfit reminds me of Spider-man, given how Peter is known to be good pals with the Fantastic Four, it's nice to imagine a future kid descendant of him being made part of the team proper. Or how about in 4012 with one of the kids in the graduation speech having what is clearly an Iron Man suit. Ben lamenting how things changed over time in 5012 yet still makes time to see the statues of Reed, Sue, and Johnny is something when you consider he's probably been doing it for 3 thousand years at that point. To say nothing of 6012 when he finally dies. And yet Franklin looks no different than all the other times he is shown. I imagine Franklin was thankful to have his Uncle Ben be around for him. And while it is somewhat sad knowing that Ben Grimm would die at some point, he at least would have it be with family. And I suppose Franklin would try and hold onto those good memories as he continues the rest of his existence for however long it would happen to be. If not to the end of time. And if that one instance where Steve Rodgers wound up in the distant future where Franklin and he talk for it bit, only to reveal the land they were talking on is Groot. Well, I suppose it'd be good to know Franklin wouldn't exactly be alone in his life even towards the end of the universe or some other such thing...

Long lived is said to be a blessing it comes at a price, with what memories are worth having, but in some cases, a great deal of saddness is part of that, Ben Grim of the Fantastic 4 maybe their muscle but his also their heart he see them as both friends and family and a team. They've been together for most of a century, and the team have been trying to stay together through doudts and many serious events in the first years as a team, Ben has struggled with his monstrous look for a major part of adult life been the oldest of the team isn't easy either but his heart is that of a pilot and a quick wite with lapis of anger at his look, but sometimes he bits the bullet and see what has to be done, never actually alone he has his family round him. Times do come and go. People vanishes or disappear briefly in time, and memories alter and age will give him wisdom, but for those he loved who are but distant memories or shadows of his mind will travel with him to the stars of the universe for him to reunite with his family of four the Fantastic Angels of the kingdom Above All Benjamin Grim, a fantastic Man who was more amazing, a fantastic icon of a cosmic team, he may have been original, but he saved the whole universe half million times, including the human race... Till the end, a champion of each reality. The Thing hero and possibly humanity best of the best, wiseman and strong the blue-eyed hero of Marvel Universe...

nah, reed might be a pliable membrane, but he still suffers from cellular degen like anyone else. he has no regenerative abilities so while his mutated body is resilient it still ages

I don’t know why people are so worried about “you have no relatives left”? I would consider immortality a blessing because I could bring great benefits to society. Maybe I'm immoral, but I'm not at all emotionally affected by the idea that "all your relatives and close people are dead." it's okay, I'll find new friends

There was a fantastic Four comic where Johnny pranked the Thing by gluing orange drinking straw bits to his chin while he slept to convince him he needed a shave, it took half-asleep Ben a while to remember he doesn't grow a beard because he's made of stone. Apparently the artist on this comic is ALSO half asleep. 01:30 those aren't Kree, those are SKRULL

So Ben has aged very slowly over the course of 4,000 years. And this is a bittersweet end of a very long life, so many memories, so many losses. Very touching. His nephew is right there, watching his very long-lived uncle finally pass away from old age, but he is the same as ever, is literally immortal, will continue to exist for who knows how long? I'm afraid I haven't read this specific series for myself; just happened to click on this video. Now I'm curious. Does the comic deal with the immortal nephew's plight?

A movie focusing on the aspect of him returning to his human form for just one week a year could make for quite the story! I feel there is already a comic aboot this but heres my thoughts anyways. Ide imagine him meeting someone and hitting it off, also hitting it off with some bad guys and a typical super hero story ensues. Except he is stuck as a normal human having to protect himself and those around him, but ofcourse in the final act he returns to his rock form and obliterates the bad guys, but the focus would be on his transformation and its implications on the new relationship.

i've seen at a glance some stories about Reed, turning colder and colder, less friendly, less loving to Sue, making him mean and sometimes a villain, i get it, its the cycle of comics, ever changing, ever evolving and exploring the millions of millions of possibilities. But i'm glad even between all these glorious and/or nefarious stories, there's still a little bit of the old family, Reed being Reed and Ben keeping him grounded and connected,
