Johnny Larson but, if we're being honest, the Xenomorph is a creature that works only with human fears. Human fears of sexuality, rape and other phallic things. That's what separates it, for me at least, from other fictional alien creatures. The Thing, however, is different. The Thing works by becoming your friends, your species, then killing you. It isn't human, thus wouldn't be afraid of the Xenomorph, a creature designed around human fears. Or something like that....

It's my favorite horror film of all time. It's one of the rare films where elements such as the situation, the alien/creature, location, tension/suspense/feeling of paranoia, the deaths work perfectly because none of them are neglected. Even though it is gory as shit, we are still never allowed to forget the terror of the situation and the fact that if you were in the situation and made the mistake to trust the wrong person you are going to experience an agonizing and horrific death. Love this film, my dad shown me it when I was like 8-9 and I'm not even mad even though it scared the shit out of me as a kid and still does now aha

You're right on the nose about all those things. But also I'd add that much like Jaws, it had one of the more fitting--albeit simple--soundtracks ever. The Thing prequel did have practical effects that were inexplicably scrapped by the studio in favor of CGI; they're quite good but not up to the level Carpenter's The Thing. If you want to check them out, they were recycled for the otherwise-not-very-good movie Harbinger Down. I feel The Thing prequel is unfairly maligned. It's not a bad horror film by any means, it's just not nearly as good as its predecessor. Then again, very few films of any genre are.

Don't forget the score. That music at the start was absolutely mesmerising. The new The Thing 2011 wasn't a bad attempt either. I liked it as well, specially how it ties in. Friendly warning to those who haven't seen either; Watch the original first.

Agreed. Carpenter nailed in Big Trouble In Little China also, he just seems to capture the mood so perfectly.
@keefriff9910 жыл бұрын
The great Ennio Morricone (of Spaghetti Western fame...see The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) scored The Thing, a rare instance of Carpenter not self-scoring his own film...although he DID contribute some synth pieces which ended up in the film. Carpenter is underrated both as a director and as a film composer.

Chris: Your admiration for this film is appreciated. I could not have continued watching your reviews if we had not found common ground on The Thing. It has always been my favourite creature feature, and it is the reason I too became a filmmaker. I don't always share your opinion on movies, but I can respect your POV now that I know you love The Thing.

Couldn't agree more. I'm currently reviewing this on my website. One other aspect that I love about this movie that Carpenter and writer Lancaster did so well at, one that the recent version dropped the ball so hard on, is that every character is clearly distinguishable and fleshed out, which helps elevate the tension even more.

Great review!! I saw the sneak preview in Las Vegas, John Carpenter his wife and most of the main crew members with there as well as Rob Botttin who did the special effects. Got to meet them all and chat with them briefly after the movie. Was one of the most memorable events in my life! It is my ALL time favorite movie!! By far the best monster horror movie of all time! Most people don't realize how much paranoia plays a role in the plot. I was truly blessed to be working at the biggest Comic book store in Vegas at the time. We knew the manager at the theater and got invited to the screening.

I was in my mid-teens when this movie came out. I LOVED the movie then and never understood why many reportedly disliked it. I knew it was a classic back then. I liked it so much I even remember reading a paperbark copy of the book for this movie while still in high school.

What are peoples thoughts on the prequel? I personally love it, I think they did such an incredible job setting it up for the original, yet still allowing it to be its own film, but still feel like the original. It has a pretty bad rating so people mustn't like it, Id be interested in why?
@halfmadjesus10 жыл бұрын
Me personally, I had problems with the creature in the prequel because it doesn't act like the Thing. It reveals itself and leaps out attacking people just to make for CGI action sequences. It's an incredibly dumbed-down movie in comparison to its "sequel". The PC attempt at adding a female lead also didn't work, because she wasn't an interesting character. In fact, no character is as memorable as what the actors did with their roles in Thing '82. I appreciated the nods to Carpenter's film -- you could tell on some level that the creative people involved were fans themselves -- but it just wasn't enough. Thing is, the end result wasn't a terrible film really, just a mediocre one -- which is almost worse.
@ScarecrOmega10 жыл бұрын
I loved it too. I like how they redid the "blood test" scene with creatively making the alien not able to change non-organic things like gold teeth and earings. The ending on the spaceship is kind of too cliche but they tied into the 80's film nicely. Every time I watch this film I will always watch the prequel right before. The only bad thing about the prequel was they didn't use the practical effects that they had a team already to use for the film. I saw the behind the scenes look at their work and it was just as brilliant as this film.
@WillMBeasley10 жыл бұрын
I didn't love it but it was not a bad movie. I did like the credit scene when it connects to the 80's movie though. And the performances were good. I'd watch it on cable but I would not buy it. I own the 80's movie and watch it from time to time.

It's generally accepted that Childs is the Thing, and that MacReady realizes it. Watch the scene again. You can see MacReady's breath in the cold, but you can't see Childs'.
@SleepyKaiju710 жыл бұрын
Holy crap. Didn't notice that til now. Wasn't child's talking to him in the last scene?! I thought for some reason the creature never truly spoke?
@monoveloso10 жыл бұрын
Hello, you can play the ps2 videogame to follow the story
@xxka0tikkxx5 жыл бұрын
@@SleepyKaiju7 the "Thing" definitely speaks. It assimilates everything down to the memories. Which is what makes it so scary because you can be talking to someone trying to determine who could be The Thing, and it could have you fooled because of supposedly something the "real" person would know The Thing would also now know. And if I remember right, there was never any 100% confirmation either way of if the Thing survived or if Childs was the Thing. If you accept that the Ps2 is the true continuation of the the Thing then Childs was NOT a Thing at the end as its shown he died of Hypothermia in the game. Going strictly off the movie itself, and unless theres something else that people missed all the popular theories have been debunked. The "no breath" being one of them. Then theres the eye gleam theory which falls apart as The Thing was shown with eye gleam in a few scenes, same with Childs different jacket theory etc. KZbin is a great source for seeing these theories get debunked. Search it.

Seven years on… I was blessed to have Arts-supportive parents growing up. My MOM took me to see this when I was 13, on a Friday night, in a packed, frightened theatre. My English teacher was ALSO there, probably wondering what I was doing at an R-rated movie, even though I told her I loved Horror movies. Mom also took me to see the premiere of “Alien” when it came out, as I was taken by the lead-up fan mags, Sigourney Weaver, and the preview I saw while in the theatre for “Phantasm," this time with my film-addicted Brother (too many scary R-rated movies at young ages? Larry Cohen’s PG-rated “It’s Alive,” with Bernard Herrmann’s chilling score, again viewed in Cinema, REALLY did a job on me at seven years old! I think a review of “It’s Alive," a SERIOUS look, would be great on this channel: fantastic acting, Bernard Herrmann’s score, and a deep exploration of motives and emotion). I wanted to mention that Rob Bottin, who was in charge of the practical effects for “The Thing" was supposedly only TWENTY-ONE YEARS OLD when he worked on the film! If true, this was MASTERWORK of effects at such a young age (any age, really). It’s mind-boggling, in reality. For such a fantastic film, a work just seething with emotional manipulation and paranoia to be dismissed by the US public, it says quite a bit about our overall ability to understand greatness when we see or hear it. Nothing much has changed, sadly.

I love this movie! Is not one of my Top 10 or 20 best films I have ever seen, but is mostly around 31 or 32. Here are my favorite horror movies: 1: The Shining(1980) My favorite movie of all time, Jack Nicholson is amazing just like the how cast, thrilling, scary, basically the perfect horror movie! 2: Psycho(1960) My 2 favorite movie of all time and one of the most tense movies I have ever seen, amazing perfomances, scary and still original and believable! 3: Rosemary's Baby(1968) Possibly one of the most sentimental movies in horror genre, scary and thrilling, Mia Farrow should be nominated to Oscar for her role,great directing and script, and my 5th favorite movie of all time! 4: Carrie(1976) A very heartfelt movie, Sissy Spacek should had won the Oscar, scary and very sad, my 7th favorite movie of all time! 5: Alien(1979) The best horror/sci-fi movie of all time, with one of the most scary creatures of all time, and the most unlikely female hero: Ripley, tense and very claustrophobic. My 11th favorite movie of all time! 6: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1974) Scary, disturbing, and for me surprise the characters are relatable, my 12th favorite movie of all time! 7: The Exorcist(1973) Scary, with wonderful perfomances, tense, sad, a perfect mix of drama and horror, my 17th favorite movie of all time! 8: The Thing(1982) Does I need to say anything about it? 9: Halloween(1978) Thrilling, scary and original, love it! 10: The Birds(1963) This is movie is directed by Alfred Hitchcock, do I need to say more?
