A 40 year old movie that could be released today and be an instant hit. Few movies are as timeless as Alien.
@HateshWarkio6 жыл бұрын
Dunno man. Movie critics would tear it a new asshole if it came today being completely the same as it is. People are benevolent because it is in the end almost 40 years old movie and so the effects are evaluated for its time period.
@psteeg35516 жыл бұрын
Hatesh Warkio what effects exactly? Most of the alien stuff was done with practical stuff, and there's not much alien stuff in the movie (which creates the suspense). The few effects you see in Alien are great and are better than any CGI that a 2018 Alien would have. But perhaps some of the effects/puppets could be improved, like Ash' head

@lurkerrekrul7 жыл бұрын
+enigma19833 - I was actually a little disappointed in AvP2. Not only did I think the alien models in the first game were better, but the whole game was way too scripted. You can't even find and choose a lone human to impregnate as the facehugger, you have to find your way to the one human that you're ALLOWED to impregnate. Plus, It got to the point where it was pretty predictable when you were going to be attacked. The expansion disc, Primal Hunt was even worse. I'm not saying it was a bad game, but it could have been better. For all its faults, the first game tended to feel more unpredictable.

Another thing about this film is that it fakes you out again towards the end. Ripley seems to be the hero, but she goes off on her own without Lambert and Parker. So here, you'd naturally expect Ripley to get picked off by the alien, but instead it kills both Lambert and Parker. Also, putting a spin on horror movie cliches, the film gets down to three people: two woman and a black man. That's pretty cool.

@jazzx2517 жыл бұрын
I'm glad YOU think so. But was it worth the trouble? That cat was a nightmare to deal with - kept refusing to come out of its trailer if its prawns and cream weren't served at the correct temperature. It demanded its own supply of fresh catnip EVERY single day - so it could "get in the mood" ... Ridley Scott risked everything finding a dealer to give the cat what it wanted. Its drinks rider was ridiculous - the finest Scotch and champagne ... which was untouched througout the whole shoot. Above all else, it INSISTED that it was the main star of the show, and that it should survive until the end (the original script had it killed off by the escaped chestburster) ... it also insisted that it received the highest percentage of closeups of any character in the movie. There are very few wide shots, it's mainly closeups (which it milks every time). Weaver has hinted that she developed a cat allergy during the filming of this movie ... a coded way of saying that she had a real personality clash and hated his guts. She wasn't acting when she says in Aliens "and you, shithead, aren't coming with me" .. sounds funny in the movie, but she was deadly serious when she delivered that line. "Jonesy" died of a catnip overdose in 1988 on the set of Die Hard - they chose to remove the cat from the script rather than try to find a replacement. A decision that saved them an estimated $10 million in wages and expenses.

I remember long debates with friends on what these aliens were and how they came to be. we hoovered up all the lore we could find ( stuff that later got retconed) and would try to understand a 'bigger picture'. God I miss films that make you want to know more. what I think I was trying to say was it left you with many more frightening questions then answers if you sat and dwelled on it. I think the best lovecraftien example I can think of is 'the city of madness' where some explorers find a ancient city in the Arctic and realise it's not human made. it ends with them escaping in a plane but as they are climbing altitude one of them glimpse the city whole (or maybe a massive entity, I struggle to remember) and loses his mind at the consequences of this site. amazing stuff considering when it was wrote. I think I just bastardisd that story so bad I need to read it again 😦

Avery Hinks Don't know why Alien: Resurrection gets so much hate. Its acting is poor, the cinematography isn't that great, it's no where near as good as the first two, but it is without a doubt better than the third one for me, and the infant hybrid alien thing was a very disturbing and creative design. Alien 3 was shit, both cuts of the film, the assembly cut might be slightly better, but slightly better than trash is still not too good.

I saw in the movies in '79 when I was 13--it was an unbelievably frightening and spectacular experience for me. After Star Wars and Close Encounters, this was a gut punch for me. I didn't sleep well for weeks after--like SW it energized me towards a love of filmmaking especially after understanding the subtle connections to european artists like Mobius, Chris Foss, etc then in '80 I bought a book by Heavy Metal magazine called the Big Book of Alien it deepened my love for this scarily dark and depressed universe--it was anti-Star Trek, primal fear (Cartwright's face as the Xeno's killing Parker), swear, runaway technology, slime, blood. Space is dark for a reason!

Absolutely agree with the grading, my favorite scene in this movie is when Ripley activates the self-destruct mechanism. When 'mother' starts counting down, it builds this immense sense of urgency which is perfectly depicted through the set, lighting and acting. It's so powerful, brings tears in my eyes, it's just that good. What a movie, 1979 no less, absolutely miles ahead of its time.

Nothing can top the chest bursting scene. That mounting dread and uneasy feeling as Kane thrashes around on the table, that awful split second of silence followed by the horrifying sound of ribs breaking apart and the blood curdling squeal of the creature. No horror movie ever matched this intensity, in my opinion
@AbilityModifier7 жыл бұрын
I made a strange sound when I realised you were reviewing the alien films. Fuck yes stuckmann, Fuck yes. I'm so curious what you think of Alien 3. I'm so horrifically split over it, one half of me loves the (obviously) fincher elements, and I love the concepts. Charles Dance is also great, but it's just such a jumbled mess from a continuity or story standpoint. Killing two of the survivors (Trying to avoid spoilers.. because.. well.. I don't know, the films 20 years old, but i'm just that nice.) from Aliens was such a bizarre decision, that entire 'fire in the tunnels' scene felt like it was 100% made for the trailer, as it's all undone pretty quick and means very little in the actual finished product. And yet.. I still watch it every time I watch the first two. I won't start on Resurrection.

Aliens was a brilliant movie in its own right, but as a pure piece of art, Alien takes the cake in this genre. It basically took the cosmic horror of HP Lovecraft, the singular art of Giger and created a masterpiece. For Cameron, it was basically plug-and-play. It's ham-fisted compared to the delicate touch Scott shows in the original.

Except for Mother's Console, this movie is timeless. From the musical score, to the unknown actors, to the flickering lights and dripping and swaying chains, this move was terrifying. Ridley Scott is an accomplished director to make more good films even some not so good ones. Anyway, this movie won an Oscar award for best visual effects. It deserves it. Love the cast, the score and everything in it. I wanna watch it again and again and again. I give this an A+.

Was so curious as to your thoughts on Alien since it’s one of my favorites and has haunted me since the day I saw it in the theatre in it’s original run, (I’m old...) I’m glad you hold it in the highest regards as I do. As to Aliens, I saw it back in the day and it did nothing for me. I felt the people that populated the original film as well as our exposure to the alien creatures, was satisfying enough. The mood, the pacing, the score, the visuals...the original was as far as I wanted to go because, for me, it was perfection. I’ve ignored any further sequels after the second Alien film, and I’m happy to leave it at that. But that’s me. Thanks!!!

Ahh my all time favourite Sci-fi horror movie ever, "Alien" was such a brilliant & fantastic film & it gave everyone an insight of what was going on because the best thing about this is fact you don't know what's gonna happen & i my best part of the movie was that bit where 3 crew members in spacesuits find a derelict alien spaceship & walk inside the ship & you see the camera zooming back they discover something really terrifying, all 3 crew members find a big gigantic fossilised space jockey which i thought was absolutely amazing & incredibly put together really well for the movie set too & everything about this movie was fabulous & excellent as it will ever be because it's just a classic sci-fi horror movie & Ridley Scott has done an excellent job in making this movie & the director's cut is far much better than the original version because it's bit longer & makes a whole lot of sense of what's going on in the film & these extra scenes which weren't shown at Cinema's including the part were you see Ripley climbing the ladder & then she finds Dallas cocconed by the Alien creature & then he says kill me & then Ripley kills him with a flamethower & that is definitely my other favourite part of the movie which was awesome, An Outstanding & Successful Achievement from Ridley Scott himself too & A True Masterpiece😊 well done😁😁😁😊😊😊😆😆😆👽👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Chris, i didn't realize you were that young! I was there for opening weekend in '79 and it might be the best film experience i've had in a theater. You spoke of tension when the alien was NOT in the scene. When the lights went up, i was exhausted from gripping the dam armrests for the last 80 minutes. I went again the 2nd weekend and in both viewings there were viewers literally screaming during THE scene. And it continues to give! About 8 years ago, we had a family viewing with my youngish daughter-in-law who'd never seen it. When Dallas was crawling thru the air ducts, my granddaughter chirped "I'm scared." My DiL comforted her by saying "Don't worry, nothing will happen to him; he's the main character." Ha! we never let her forget that line of wisdom... Excellent review of A perfect film.

I'm not convinced by the CGI alien headbanging the window of the spaceship either. Strangely shaped Man-in-a-Suit, perfectly lit, will always beat CGI - the scene where the alien silently descends down behind Brett (played by a gymnast in the suit) is perfectly convincing. Because it looks and moves like a real creature - because a real creature (human) is playing the character. (surprise, surprise)

Just watching this review again, after revisiting the Alien trailer - one of the best trailers ever made - just seen the shot you included of the face hugger on Kane. Amazing how good the creature still looks seeing as it was made in 1979!! It looks real, because it's not CGI! It is real! Amazing FX and creature design. Obviously owing a huge debt to Giger. But the same can be said for the main xenomorph. Still looks amazing, because it was real and used sparingly. This movie will NEVER get old.
