Makes sense and have certainly heard this a ton from many people. My only pushback is the implication that you can’t build a base with low bar.

It's great to see you doing so well Pete after the health complications you overcame it's fair to say you have completely 180 rebounded and have broke through to the other side and then some keep up the good work my man long time fan appreciate the continued content one of the realest lifters on KZbin!

one thing powerlifters can learn from bodybuilders is, muscle mass moves weight. and muscle mass is built via good form and not short-circuiting the movement to move extra load. If ronnie had ever done powerlifting in his bodybuilding peak, he wouldve broke all the records. u guys dont understand how strong he was. he lifted 800lbs+ etc using bodybuilding form (time under tension). He never optimised his training for powerlifting.

This is very similar to what Matt Wenning talks about when he left westside. Use the gear to help with fatigue as the weights start to get heavier deeper into the cycle

Not to mention less wear and tear on the elbows and lower back possibly, depending on high bar depth

If you get new shoes for the race make sure they are the same style of shoe within a couple mm heel drop to what you've been training in the last week or two before the big day. I learned the hard way on that once lol. Too much +/- can put a lot of fresh strain on your achilles over that many strides and make it feel like you've never run before. 1:40 will fall. Only thing that'll stop that from happening is if you get inside your head too much during the first 6 or 7 miles - or some very uncooperative weather...

100% agree on only using low bar to max out. Working high bar consistently always does more for my squat than anything. I also really like doing leg press with my feet close and low on the machine to really work the quads by pushing through the toes/balls of my feet.

I've never been able to get in a low bar position for whatever reason. My best is 315lbx5 high bar. Squats are NEVER easy. Not making excuses but I am a long femured boi. I'm building back up now

Good stuff. I remember John Broz recommended doing thousands of reps with just the bar to program the movement and get comfortable before adding weight.

I don't compete, and wouldn't even say i have "good" gym numbers, but squat is definitely my crappiest lift. Would safety bar squats be an ok substitute for highbar?

One thing I've been doing recently is warm up with like 50 reps of heel-elevated BW squats, makes my regular squat more upright and quad-driven and also helps if you have knee pain

Awesome that you mentioned this. I discovered this exact same warm-up for me makes my squats feel amazing. I get my knees forward and set in my training session feeling confident after a warm-up like this.

Stay natty unless you’re genetically gifted. Why would you wanna be on gear and know that there are natty guys that are significantly bigger/leaner/stronger than you around your weight. Unless you were so insecure that you convinced yourself that all of the top natty guys were in fact on gear😂.

Are you doing any backdown work? What’s your assistance looking like? Is your squat day before your deadlift day in the week? Knowing nothing else about you, I’d make sure your squat day is first if you’re running a standard 4x week upper / lower, giving you an extra day of rest after deadlifts. I’d hit lighter high bar paused squats or hack squats after deadlifts. On my main squat day I’d either do the top set followed by 1-3 sets of the second set weight that day, or I’d do three sets with the top set weight, hitting the last for an AMRAP. And I’d reset your training max to 340lbs.

I think I really need to squat without belt and sleeves, Been doing a program and I twisted my ankle at work it's so demotivating to see your hard work just go down the drain because of a misstep. But I'll definitely be doing equipmentless
