While I understand where you're getting at, it feels like you're expecting too much. This is not a remake, even if you said it yourself. This is just a remaster, it's basically just a port with a few quality of life improvements and slightly better graphics.

and i think you’re totally right, i guess my point i didn’t think of til after i made the video (ain’t that always what happens) is that, with a game that I *personally* feel to be so fundamentally flawed, i think it would be better to just port it, than have people, especially new players, see “remaster” and think it’s going to be more than it is. the game FEELS older than it looks imo, so it’s almost putting a giant target on nightdive for no reason, you know? like, if it’s gonna feel old, let it be old and take the pressure off 🤷

@@Mortuary_Gaming new players dont give a fuck about this game. there might be a few people who want to experience the movie they like, but lets be real here - this is a game for people who played original and therefore developers cant change too much. have you seen what happens on forums when they change even small details? people are going crazy. look what happened with silent hill 2, which was effectively made from scratch as a remake. and you want them to change more in a remaster? yeah, no way. and the thing is that this game was never perfect, i played it on the day of release and i still remember perfectly what it is like. it was a game that had a lot of problems, but the gameplay was interesting enough that player wanted to finish it. and thats it. for some unknown reason you want the game to be better than it is, and that would require a complete rebuild, exactly as developers said. so yes, they added nicer lights and shadows, maybe improve aiming, game will run on the latest windows and thats all they can do.

It's a remaster to their KEX engine which mainly will help with playability on modern systems and bug fixes, it's not a System Shock REMAKE

Honestly I feel like average gamer will pay lip service to game preservation and then not care about it one bit. "You wanted a remaster/port so here's a remaster/port. No reason to faff around with fragile and inconsistent update-to-update emulators you can just play it on modern systems." -"Well I can just emulate it if you're not gonna change anything." I have no clue where this attitude is coming from. Especially as I am a Silent Hill fan and setting up all the Silent Hill games ESPECIALLY THE ONES NEVER RELEASED FOR PC is a pain to do in emulators. Dolphin - broken graphics. PCSX2 - broken graphics that get fixed in one update WHOOPS you missed that update? Too bad, no way to download it now, we had 50 updates between then and now. Sucks to suck, should've religiously followed and tried each update. RPCS3 - the abysmal framerate Xenia - AMD graphics cards get wireframe effect on Downpour. Shoulda picked an Nvidia graphics card, nerd (not even accounting for if you purchased the game for Xbox 360 and are trying to do this legitimately). Hell the only easy one to set up was the original Silent Hill and that's only AFTER trying like 10 emulators and realizing that maybe my previous experience with Duckstation shouldn't paint how it behaves now. Viola - the one emulator I avoided like a plague was the easiest one to set up and worked perfectly. PPSSPP is probably even easier but if you're gonna play an overlit version of Origins or a SIGNIFICANTLY downgraded Shattered Memories whose major selling point was the graphics and the transitions (because it certainly wasn't the combat which it lacked) than that's on you. Just let games get remastered and/or ported. "You wanted MGS 1 on PC so here's MGS 1 on PC exactly how it was on PS1" -"I can just emulate it better." "Okay here's MGS2 and MGS3 in the same package. 1080p, stable fps" -"Why not 1440p? That's very limiting". Do you want games perserved or not? Because in 9 times out of 10 it seems like gamers want way more than game preservation when preservation of a game gets offered to them. Case in point: Shadows of the Damned.

It would be so difficult to do though. They'd have to record lines for all different situations a fully-fledged blood test mechanic would entail, and it would almost certainly be different voice actors, which means they would have to re-record the whole game for consistency. At that point you might as well make a new game

The were rumors of a no one lives forever remaster which is on the same engine as AVP2 so hopefully it's on their list. For some reason both of those games have been delisted for years but have fan sites were you can download them and provide modern patches and even the expansions to download

Hmmmmmm, I dunno. They are being very vague. I suspect there is a nice surprise other than a minimal graphic upgrade and a few new cutscenes. Either way, I'm just gonna chill and wait to see what the final product is like. I doubt it is gonna be worse than the original, so I'm still looking forward to it.

I also agree with one point you made. Asking for remake things in the remastered. I think its healthy to add things like crafting, weapons, clothing, basically survival type gameplay mechanics, npcs, quests maybe an expansion for the map, while staying true to the original. Its will help new gen players get into it. Just small thing that won't break the original.

I'm definitely with you overall. I love Nightdive, but I think they had ambitions that they then realized would not be possible in just a remaster of this game. Hopefully that's not the case, but it does feel that way. Still, as you said, I think even the simpliest remaster is a good thing. Personally I tried to play through the game a few times (as recent as this year) and it always loses me somewhere down the line. So this remaster seemed potentially exciting. But I'm on the fence with it at the moment; we'll see what ultimately comes of it.

I think the original game was so fundamentally flawed they should scrap it and start from scratch. Resident Evil demonstrated that you could have a game set around one location (the mansion). It would have made perfect sense for a Thing game to take the same approach, in other words replace the mansion with an Antarctic research station, and give the player tasks like restoring power and finding survivors, and immediately you have that sense of isolation from the movie. Keep the cast of characters limited so you actually have time to become familiar with them and become attached to them, and have the characters split off into groups to do tasks. When you reunite with the characters, it then becomes imperative that you blood test them to check they are still human (if you have enough blood tests available), and keep scripted burst outs to a minimum (there could be a couple of scripted moments for the sake of plot development and set pieces). It blows my mind even after 22 years that they went for a “level” approach with the player hopping from one location to the next, removing any sense of isolation, and having a constantly rotating cast of characters, negating the need to actually test them.

I'll be honest, I don't like remasters, if it's just to change the graphics and add some items to the scenarios, the emulator and the mods already do that for free, just like our dear Mortuary already said, if you don't have any more ideas, let it be a remake, if you're going to leave everything exactly the same, I don't even see the reason for this project, sometimes what we value most is nostalgia, half of the games I loved, nowadays with 4k upscale, are not the same thing.

One thing I hope they can fix is these scripted transformations...that takes out the fear and paranoia of the game of the thing...but chances are they won't,also that part with col Whitley when Blake shoot's them gas cans and set him on fire and for some reason he is immune..that has got to go..the thing when it takes over a host cannot withstand fire...not happening ok,also I hope we can get more levels and enemies as well,and the thing theme to play in the background as well and hell maybe we could get an online mode...now that would spice 'things' up...but we probably won't get that either....let's hope...and remember...trust...no...one

The original video game had so, so, much potential. The concept was already there to make it work. The actual final product was just garbage. Put aside the common bugs that regularly happened. Those by themselves already made the game so difficult to play. The whole process of actually interacting with your companions and enemies was so needlessly overcomplicated. Give this guy a meditation, tell the other guy to do the blood test to the other, tell that other guy to fix the junk box, give ammo to that guy, this one guy is shittin' his pants, the other guy wants a flare, tell one guy to attack the enemy, oh wait that guy that just got tested and came back negative turned etc. Like, dude. Seriously? I only made it halfway through the game before I had to call it quits. That really blows considering that the game itself was actually kind of terrifying in some ways. Had the game not been so complicated and bugged out it could have actually been a really great. Something akin to The Suffering. I was really hoping for this to be a complete remake.

Not every game needs to be given the Biohazard 2 Remake treatment. I appreciate remasters. The issue I have is that Nightdive's the only one doing it. I'm in the minority when I say that they're not the best choice. They've done great job with Doom 1 + 2, but that's the only good remaster they've done. Almost all their other re-releases cut out, added hand-holding, and/or altered content, and with the altered content there's no option to revert them back to how they were or turn off the gameplay changes. Those games also introduced bugs not found in the original.

While I agree more companies should be doing it, I think NightDive is astounding. Killing Time, Powerslave Exhumed, Doom 1+2, Doom 64, Rise of the Triad and Blood are 10/10 games, but that's kind of my issue with the thing remaster. Those games were ALREADY 10/10s, they just ported them into KEX and brought those flavors out a bit more. I just think the original thing game is flat out bad haha I genuinely think it's a shitty excuse for a thing sequel, I think it completely misunderstands the film's tone and premise, gameplay is bad, gameplay loop is abysmal, combat is horrible, etc etc. So like, I just don't understand the point of up-resing textures if this fundamentally flawed and shit product is still remaining.

For people who never got to play the old Thing game I think we should just be grateful they are doing it for us! The Thing wont appeal to everyone, and it may not be the best. But lets just be happy that they have remastering a game we never thought they would! It was a major surprise them they dropped the trailer! The core mechanics of the original game were great. It was just hard to play in certain areas and scenarios. I for one think it's better to take the original game and work off that than reinvent the wheel and possibly fail entirely. Most remakes are garbage, man, I just don't want this project to fail.

@@abdou.the.heretic Even a cookie cutter PC port with no major improvements still has value on the accounts of more efficient game preservation since emulators require an ISO file or similar for you to actually run the game which is increasingly difficult as physical copies get more and more expensive, that and the fact that the game will run on your PC's own hardware rather than attempting to emulate the whole engineering and specs of a gaming console will yield better results in terms of stability and performance Granted I do not agree with this practice, I think PC ports should receive improvements and I certainly don't believe The Thing's Remaster will be good enough to warrant buying it But I still wanted to point out why some people act as if emulation can replace or outperform PC ports which is obviously false Emulation is an amazing tool but it will never replace a proper native PC port
