THE THING VIDEO GAME (2002) Playing With Fear
Games based on movies don't always turn out so well. Especially games that seem forgotten to time. But every once in a while, a game based on a film comes along, blows people away, and is somehow still lost to time. This is the case with 2002's "The Thing"; an exciting, true to the film experience that feels ahead of its time. So come join us as we dive into just how good this game is, and why it possibly fell by the wayside.
OWN THE GAME HERE! amzn.to/3kUvHdq
Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield
Edited by Tyler Nichols
Produced by John Fallon
Executive Producer by Berge Garabedian

The descent on those metal ramparts filled with perilous steam pipes & explosive barrels, not forgetting hordes of critters & special ops has to be one of the tensest & exhausting sections in any videogame. The fact that the game is so punishing in its difficulty, yet still makes you keep coming back is a testament to its brilliance.

For those interested, there is a sort of low budget homage game to the Thing movie and game on Steam called Antarctica 88. Trust me, it ain't a rip off (it becomes obvious very quickly that the game developers are very self aware of what they made) and the graphics are about as good. But it is fun. I highly recommend it for Thing fans.

Good review!! I remember when this game came out and bought it right away for my PS2. Thought that it was a good game to play. however, think about half way through the game, I came to a spot that - for the life of me - just could not get past for whatever reasons. Re-started the game and would make it to same location and still not make it past that certain spot (do not remember what/why I encountered but this game kicked my butt). Also, as for the team mates - quickly learned to give them just enough stuff to gain their trust and complete whatever mission. Quickly learned that NO MATTER what you did or gave your team mates, they WILL ALWAYSTURN!!!!! So, gave them what was needed to gain their trust; complete mission, and quickly kill them off and loot their bodies.

I thought The Thing prequel was a solid movie. It truly sucks that they decided to go with the CGI effects (rather underhandedly by the studio) I thought the story was pretty good and the attention to detail in regards to John Carpenter's The Thing is uncanny. I feel The Thing prequel suffers like Jaws 2 suffers they're both good movies but they just happen to follow EXTREMELY GREAT movies. I think the prequel, the Carpenter film, and the video game make a great trilogy.👍 BTW... John Carpenter's The Thing is my second favorite movie of all time!

I actually played this game again fairly recently after not having played it in years. Unfortunately, because it is so old, I couldn't get the right patches to fix the bugs, but to my surprise, it mostly worked pretty well on my PC, except for a couple of scenes where the audio crapped out, & the game crashing when you beat the final boss, so I had to watch the ending scene on KZbin. I enjoyed playing it again. The early parts of the game are so atmospheric & I found it to be unsettling. After you beat the first boss it is less atmospheric & more actiony, but its still enjoyable. There is so much potential for a new game. Possibly an Alien Isolation type of game.

For anyone interested, there is a fan made The Thing game made in RPG Maker and it was very good in my opinion. I usually dislike RPG Maker games, but this one was great. Currently the developer is rebuilding the game from scratch cause they want to do some new things to it. Until that is done, the current version is complete and very fun.

Sucks this was one of those one-off games but it did have approval of being a sequel by John carpenter himself and this had so much potential. I was in love with the gameplay and mechanics of it but my only gripe with it is the fact npc transformations were always scripted and you couldn't even be given the option of killing them beforehand since some turned out to be required to progress past a door or something BEFORE they transform anyway.

It was flawed. I just couldn’t get past one part in the game I loved it until always getting killed trying to escape an area burning down due to its controls. Had to say it was memorable enough to make crave games like it so the dead space games coming out sort of made up for the messed up controls this game had. What’s more the people who played it never finished it either. A full on remastering campaignand added online multiplayer would give this game the nod it truely earned for being one of the smartest type of games out there at the time. With some of the great game tech out there it’s worth doing this over and going one better than the resident evil 2 and 3 remasters and they nailed it with the lighting effects and atmospheric pressure

When this game came out, I wanted it. Then I read a review that revealed that the developers had intentionally broken the game, and that killed my desire to play it. What do I mean by broken? The made the idea of not knowing who is infected a core part of the game, and gave you a way to test people to see if they're infected. This is completely, 100% pointless because certain characters are scripted to turn into the thing at set points in the game. You can literally test someone, get a negative result, and then they turn into a thing 10 seconds later. The developers intentionally broke their own game for the sake having a scripted story.

It took me forever to finish this game, i stopped at some point for months because it was too scary.

This would've actually been a kick ass sequel to the first one. instead we get a lackluster prequel with over done CG. I rented this back in the day, but never finished it. I might pick this one up again.

Had this when I was younger! Unfortunately, I never got the chance to finish it. Not far into the game it would crash, and no amount of restarts would fix it.

I had this for PC back when it came out. I still have yet to see the actual movie it’s based on 😂

It was a great game with one exception. It was very stingy with ammo.

So it's been that long ago when it was released on OG Xbox almost 20 years ago. I remember the day I went to Gamestation and purchased it and loved the mechanics of the game and the dread and fear of the isolated base in the dark. It's one of the few games I never completed, and compared to the controls of Halo, it had terrible janky controlling system. Paramount should've made this game into a follow-up film instead of a prequel. Just copy the all out warfare like Aliens from Alien.
