While we already did this game's sister release in "Friday the 13th", it was well past time to dive into the NES version of "A Nightmare On Elm Street." Will you be a dream warrior or another dream victim? Will Freddy even be the villain or is this just a red herring? I always loved this game. I think I beat it only once or twice. I remember it being pretty difficult. Plus the song from the boombox has been stuck in my head for decades because it's awesome.

I remember picking this game up with my older brother at the same time we got our hands on the Game Genie. We had an absolute blast playing this together with cheat codes on! Definitely one of my favorite memories tied to the NES.

Thank you for doing this review! So much nostalgia for me. My grandfather had Nintendo when I was a kid in the late 80s/early 90s and this is one of the games I would play a lot because I loved the movies so much. I wasn't (and I'm still not) any good at games (I didn't even realize there were dream power options), but it was so cool to see Freddy in this medium. Also, I would stare at the pics of the villains in the manual and imagine what it would be like if they actually looked like that in the game.

There are games for "Halloween" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" for the Atari 2600. You play as Leatherface and you have to dodge wheelchairs. (If you see the movie, you'll understand. LOL)

Very underrated game. This is one of those NES titles whose reputation was destroyed because it was the subject of an early AVGN video. Do yourself a favor and play it yourself.

I owned it back in the day. It was one of my favorites, would play it at least once a month. I also owned a Four Score and extra controllers, so got to experience the 4 player mode. Loved it then, and wish I still had it today. Rented the Friday The 13th game, but could not get into it.

Can anyone imagine…..I was like prime little kid age when these movies and the character were at peak popularity AND I have a horrific phobia of the character. Like jarring. Like even now I can look at the video play except in small glances. From birth I was a light sleeper and by second grade was having vivid nightmares. Then this shit came out and it’s like a combination of everything horrifying all at once but the big trigger (besides the constant movie trailers being played and merch) was me running heads up with a life sized cardboard advertisement for the third movie in the video store. Scared me forever and I still can’t watch anything about the creep. I just wanted to see game play here cause I heard it was horrible but was always too scared to try.

8:01 Ackchyually, 1990 was still the '80s since decades on the Gregorian calendar go from 1 to 10, not 0 to 9. Dana Scully would back me up on that. 9:19 Since when does Freddy wear a bladed glove on his left hand? In a side-scrolling game, you expect to see that, just because of the way sprites work (what with mirror-imaging and whatnot). Kudos to avant-garde game designers like Eric Chahi who went a different direction and were mindful of left and right.

@@Evil_Noah It's the last digit that determines it. And the fact that the calendar starts with year-1, not year-0. If it started with year-0, then there'd be no question that decades to from 0 to 9.

I would rent this game from the neighborhood video store all the time. I never figured out how to really play it as it didn't come with any instructions or strategy guides. Just the cartridge in a plastic case. Lol. Still, I enjoyed the atmosphere as I ran around basically aimlessly in the game. It was pretty creepy to a 10-year-old me.

It's a shame we only have crappy remake version of Freddy in MK9. At least for Terminator in MK11 we can choose between crappy Carl from that godawful sixth movie and classic T-800 from T2, but Freddy didn't get the same treatment.

I still own my boxed copy of the DOS version, which I always really enjoyed, but never finished. Fast forward 10 years to when I first met my husband, and we played it together - trading off between the keyboard and making a map/notes - and I finally reached the end. We hit what I assume to be a game-breaking bug, though, where Freddy appears briefly on the screen for the fight and then disappears. We tried for a few weeks to re-start the end game event, and I even opened the game in Turbo Debugger to try and track the game state bit mask checks to force the end boss engagement to restart, but no dice. Still a great time with my husband, and we’re still gaming together after 22 years :)

I remember this game being difficult to get when I was a kid. For some odd reason, it just wasn't available to purchase at any of my local or mainstream stores. There were even rumors that this games was banned because it was too violent. I never played it and AVGN really destroyed it, in a funny way....I just forgot about it. This was an awesome video and I am glad to see a positive spin on it.

Friday The 13th on NES is recalled fondly, but Freddy game is not. I never played Freddy, but I like Freddy. If it gets some love many years later it is a plus. I can't judge and I never played it. I did like the Friday The 13th game.
