Very calm narration. People have such irrational fear of crime - especially in places they are un- familiar with. The vast majority of crime is with people who know each other. Even in Chicago, DC, NOLA, Baltimore, etc., I have never had any issues. Don't be stupid, and stay out of crime-infested areas/druggie places. There is no homeless mess like so many US cities, especially on the Left Coast.

I've lived in the Carolinas over 30 years now. If you didn't have allergies before you move here just wait they will show up. A Netti pot works wonders as opposed to traditional medications. As opposed to the winters in the north where you have to be able to handle the December, January, February, in the Carolinas (other than maybe the mountains) you have to be able to handle the June, July, August. I don't really think there are 4 seasons unless you go to the mountains. I have pretty much taken to calling it spring, summer, flinter. Just my two cents worth. FLY NAVY!!!

Hello, John. Thanks for the great video. Very honest and informative. I'm from New York and plan to retire in 10 years and thinking about Florida at the moment, but I'm just batting ideas around in my head right now. I just found out my sister is moving to Monck's Corner, SC in August and my brother presently lives in Charlotte, NC so the Carolinas are in my radar, too. What's the average price of a home there in one of the gated communities? Also, what about hurricanes? I know that's an issue all along the coast, including Florida. Thanks.
@TheJohnWeberTeam2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! It's hard to give you an average because the communities are different from each other, with different price points, so it's not an apples to apples comparison. When the time comes, we would be able to find you a home that you love within your budget. Yes we do get Hurricanes, typically we are not the first landfall point, as we are so far west on the coast. They tend to make landfall along the Florida coast or north of us around Charleston.

So, as for 278, it is busier when spring break time comes and all the license plates turn to Ohio. Then also, people are not used to the street break to businesses and cannot see the signs of the places. So, use map apps to get you there if you are not familiar with the area. Also, if you are used to big concerts, well be ready to go to Charleston, Columbia, or Jacksonville. You might get lucky sometimes in Savannah

You’re very welcome Wendy! Bluffton is a bit more difficult because there aren’t many paths to bike on. There’s a path on 170. And some trails you can drive to. 278 is the only way to get to the island. The plans for the new bridge include a path for pedestrians and bicycles.

14th generation Lowcountry local here. The first thing I tell newcomers is to expect alligators in ANY and ALL bodies of water here. They do not specifically reside in fresh water. I grew up and live on Chechessee in Okatie, it is a deep saltwater river. We see alligators every year. Especially in August-September when it's very hot and dry outside. The water levels in the golf course lagoons drop so they move to the nearest deep, cooler body of water. As for the bugs, they might not be too bad if you have your porch fans on high but they are an issue year round. They die down a little when it's cold but they pop right back up after that 3-5 day cold spell we get once or twice a winter.

I disagree about the bug situation. Bugs are bad no matter where you are on the island. Salt water does not keep them away. They are not bad on the beach because the wind is usually blowing them away, but if the wind dies down they will get you. It is by far the worst thing about living here. I can't even do yard work in the summer because nothing will keep them off of me.

Don't forget this place will cost you an arm and a leg to live here, especially in a gated community. I grew up here as did my family and I'm honestly probably going to move to Pittsburgh or somewheres affordable with actual jobs as my parents already have. Unless you just got millions of dollars the whole place is a money and debt pit and I've heard that if you live in one of those planned development suburbs the HOA goes ups in the thousands of dollars. Also, not to be rude, but those few remaining who are actually locals can easily tell if your from like Ohio or New York and generally dislike you and think you are an idiot if you pretend to be a local or go into any of the local stores or restaurants expecting something of a local cuisine or local small business. Almost every single business around here from when I was 5 years has since closed (granted weren't many of them but still) and have been replaced by stores with fake facades. Take for example downtown Bluffton and almost everything there is less than 10 year old new construction except maybe the church of the cross, the nickle pumpers, half of Scotts meat market, the building where the dollar general store is now, and the two post offices. Its honestly beyond me why anyone in their right mind would move here but to each their own I suppose. From what my parents have said and from what I can remember from when I was young this place used to be pretty nice but now is just an expensive as hell place that's pretty much sinking and going to be ocean in 10-30 years.
