I recently had to cancel a workshop I was due to run in NYC at the end of March due to circumstances outside of my control. Instead of being angry or frustrated though, I found myself accepting of the situation because of something I have learned recently from reading about the Stoic Philosophers. They made of point of reminding us that we can only control the things we can control, and the rest we need to choose our response to. In this video I share the lessons I'm learning, and I hope they help you on your own journey too.
If you found it helpful, share it on.

Kinda have to agree. Well, i stayed for both, but it's the philosophy that surprised and taught me the most. Curious, for a "photography" channel :) As for THIS particular philosophy - I've naturally been trying to follow it, even tho i didn't know it was "a thing". However, it's usually actually harder to follow than to "keep pushing". Or so it seems.

Argh. Freaked out for a second there as I'm currently making a video about stoic philosophy and how we can apply it to improve our mental health in our photographic work. Now having watched your video, luckily it's quite different. I'm shooting tomorrow so might change the script a bit so I don't get a torrent of people saying I've copied you. Or maybe I shouldn't worry about what I can't control… Great video (as usual) anyway.

Very true. I used to get frustrated about world events and my wife told me, “Why worry about things you can’t control”. I sat and thought about it and realised she was so right. When I left university I set out a career path, but constantly had doors slammed in my face. I was in a “Catch 22” situation. I did absolutely everything to change that situation, but I realised that there was a reason I couldn’t open and push through that door, so I stopped trying and changed tack and set myself up as a professional photographer and for 20+ years I rode the crest off a great wave. I had been so blinkered at that time, but I realised that my degree wasn’t a waist and I used the skills I’d learned to forge a new career and it gave me something very special, time. No more 9-5 treadmill, but rather a great sense of freedom to be in charge of me and my own business. It was so liberating to know that I was in charge of me, not a faceless boss in an office somewhere. We all have to find our own path and when it all clicks, you know you are there.

Best way to practise this is in the car on any motorway. Biggest practical example of powerlessness and how to have a go at acceptance & holding on to serenity. M6, northbound, Friday rush hour. I love the Vicktor Frankl quote. One of the best books I have ever read is Man's Search for Meaning. I rate it up there with Think and Grow Rich, The Magic of Believing, and See You at the Top in terms of the best books for finding your way. Oh, and Start With Why by Simon Sinek. I saw in one of your other videos that you read a great deal. I do too, for work, but usually it's case law, and usually there are few philosophical lessons to be drawn. That's why I love Audible books; I can listen during down time and absorb the great thinkers. I really enjoy your channel. I found it quite by accident, but subscribed immediately. So much time since I heard someone bringing in this ancient philosophy: it was one of the main currents that brought on the Roman Empire and was abandoned when religion took over. In a world still bathed in Calvinism and the derived aggressive capitalism form the eighties, it's nice to see someone can still think with it's own head and search for something else that actually would works better for Everyone.

Sean, I have enjoyed and learned from each video that you have produced. This one is off the charts. Absolutely brilliant and should be propagated far and wide. In addition to being a photographer, I am a practicing psychotherapist and the points you make in this intimate conversation are valuable in ALL walks of life. My hat is off to you. I would also argue that there is no such thing as failure only feedback. What you attempted, in alignment with your integrity (so VERY important), did not work. You did learn that a P1 visa was an option and I noticed in the comments below that someone, who has a production company in LA, is stepping up to offer a possible solution. So, yes the idea of doing this on your own did not work out as planned and you learned something in the process. You will, I am absolutely certain, do workshops in the US. How that comes to be is yet for you to discover if in fact you are committed to doing workshops in the US. Your reference to the methodology espoused by the Secret not being valid I would also challenge. In my years of experience in a variety of worlds is that if you have clear what you want and are truly committed to making it a reality the Universe will conspire with you to make it happen. Believe me I have seen it repeated many times in my 77 revolutions around the sun. I am 1000% on side with you that the only things we can control is our thoughts, emotions, speech and behavior. Anything else is an illusion. All in all lad, a GREAT job! I appreciate deeply the time and effort you put into your videos. They make me think, cause me to be a more effective person which translates directly into the art I produce. THANK YOU!!

Great that you brought this up Sean, A couple of years ago I also dove into Stoicism. And grasping this changed my perspective on life so much. It unburdened me of a lot of worries. And it can also motivate people to make things happen that advances them in life. By putting effort (time and energy) into thing that you can control or influence so you are more likely to get an outcome, and not waste time and effort on things you can't control anyway. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love that you bring up more than photography on this channel. Life lessons and experience. Food for thought. Great advice in general. Keep doing it :D It's what sets you apart from repetitive tech reviews.

Yes, Sean, I agree with you. With one caveat... Isn't "doing our best", "having integrity in all the things that we do", "ensuring that we have done everything this is within our sphere of responsibility" success in its own right? Perhaps we, as a society, need to take a step back from the 1,000 MPH lifestyle and choose, instead, to recognize and enjoy the successes that either come our way or that we make by our choices and efforts. And, be the best person we can be, one choice at a time. I appreciate your transparency, your heart. Thank you for being real.

Life is kind of like surfing.. Sometimes there are is a lull and gentle waves, other times the crashing ferocity of huge swells! Both require patience, humility, and presence, forgiveness and a faith or trust in something uncontrollable, and much bigger than us.. You’re amazing Sean, Thanks for this video.

Would you consider bringing your workshops to Lisbon? It might be easier, although I don't know for sure how things would work after Brexit.

I would love that. I really enjoyed Lisbon when I was there last. If Brexit doesn't mess things up for us then I will probably just concentrate on the Europe for now:)

Hello Sean...Good of you, to see the reality of visa logic. logic or not. "When work is done, we start to play". I suggest: make a personal journey...Don't involve money. Go...Go as a student for your own classes. Take part because you want to...! If you can afford it... Invest in american connections. Who knows, might meet an agent, gallery or company, that will sort the next trip out...! Motto: "Hang around and be visible"... You are not alone...other artists know of this and have tried it.

Sean, you once again amaze me. Your creative, genuine, storytelling ability is truly a gift. So glad you are embracing it. Your message spreads far beyond photography and has merit for any human being who walks the earth. Continue doing what you do as you are changing the world one view at a time.
