glamdolly20 Brosnan was to wear a regular tux but his contract obligations to EON Productions for the James Bond movies forbade him from appearing in other films in a tux so as a compromise, he had to wear this really awkward tuxedo with an untied white bow tie to what is supposed to be a black tie event in the movie. It’s not that important in the story but that’s the backstory behind it.

Brosnan wasn’t allowed to wear a tuxedo with a tied bow tie because his likeness as the character James Bond (intellectual property) was owned by EON. His 007 contract had a clause that forbade him from dressing in a tux (essentially, as Bond) in any non-Bond film. EON put the clause in there to prevent confusion and dilution of the Bond trademark - they didn’t want people to see Brosnan in a tux and think that the Thomas Crown Affair was a Bond film.
