The Three Biggest Ideas in Animation

Welcome to Animation for Anyone. In our second class I'll explain the three biggest ideas in Animation and how they can help you use all the other principles more easily. Hope you enjoy!
Also a small correction, I incorrectly named the producer of the example film Lost and Found as Lucy Haynes when in fact her name is Lucy Hayes. Apologies about that, and thanks again to the team for letting me share their work here.
A note on software:
We don't touch on software in this class because I believe there are already lots of great tutorials out there but if you're interested in low cost options to get started there are a few that come to mind- Blender is a free 3D package and includes a "Grease Pencil" mode if you're interested in learning 2D animation. Procreate on IOS is inexpensive and has new animation features (simply turn on Animation Assist in the canvas menu). Adobe Creative Cloud suite is certainly not "low cost" but some of you may have access to it for other uses. If that is the case Photoshop and Animate CC both offer powerful animation tools and will be included in your Creative Cloud Membership. Henrique Barone said in one of his classes, "Timing is when it happens and Spacing is where it happens. Timing describes 'what' is happening and spacing describes 'how' it's happening." I'm slowing trying to find my way back into animation and I'm intimidated and excited at the same time. Its magical and that's why it's so terrifying. This helps A LOTTT. Nothing has to happen to move me to animate, I can just animate a line and call it a day. Thanks Alex!

This is incredible, any other animation introduction I’ve seen always goes straight into all the stuff like appeal and squash and stretch, I’m a person who likes to learn by getting in and toying around and it’s always just been overwhelming, but this seems way more manageable.

Other channels also inform about great ideas but what sets your channel apart is that it doesn't feel like a best random tips you never should know about video. It's more akin to a course which guides you in creating a mindset about animation. I hope you continue to make videos like this one. Maybe make one video about how crucial drawing is in clarifying your thoughts because without drawing you don't have an anchor. Many KZbinrs say it's not necessary to learn how to draw. I feel like it's crucial if you want to free your mind and not reiterate needlessly.

I've been always interested in animation, I've done some really simple short animations but I wasn't really sure if its good and I wanted to take it to the next level but I knew I wasn't ready because the knowledge was missing even though I watched many videos, or took animation courses they didn't give me what I really needed. Grim Natwick always said it all boils down to timing and spacing. One could argue that posing is a sub-topic of spacing. Great video!

That's cool. I heard it described that way at animation school but I tend to disagree. Spacing is the relationship between poses over time. Poses are like the molecules of animation and we need to arrange them in a meaningful way. They certainly aren't subservient to either spacing or timing. Removing the ambiguity of that was one of the reasons I wanted to start this channel actually.

@@AlexGriggAnimation I understand your point, but in any given set of drawings there are differences in spacing between, for example, body parts. It’s not unusual to see multiple spacing charts on any given key drawing: one for the torso, one for the arms, etc. Following those spacing charts leads to the breakdown and in between poses. That’s all I’m suggesting.
