The Three Degrees - Year Of Decision • TopPop

The Three Degrees is an American female vocal group, which was originally formed in 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The original members were Fayette Pinkney, Shirley Porter and Linda Turner. Porter and Turner were soon replaced by Janet Harmon and Helen Scott. The line-up from 1967 to 1976 was Pinkney, Valerie Holiday and Sheila Ferguson, who would go on to sing lead on most of the group's biggest hits.
They visited the Toppop studios many times. This was broadcast on 17 June 1974 on the TopPop program.

My dad has dementia and Alzheimers ….. This song was his favourite in the 70’s!! He loved it so much he accidentally bought it twice. Probably why it went to No.1…. Every time I hear it, it makes me sad, as he’s not that strong dad that I always looked up to. He’s still alive. And when I play this (or any Bobby Darin song) his toes tap!!! The 3 Degrees were fantastic. The toured the UK regularly with MFSB as a backing group. Seeing them live in a small intimate venue was fantastic. They were Prince Charles (Now King Charles III) favourite group. I wonder if they messaged him when he ascended to our throne?

Dirty Old Man just missed out on breaking the UK Top 50 but Year Of Decision, the follow up, broke into the UK Top 20. Their next hit, When Will I See You Again would reach No1 on the UK chart in late summer 1974- only the 2nd time a girl group reached No1 on the UK Singles chart, the first being the Supremes 10 years earlier with Baby Love in 1964.

I can’t help but hear Beyoncé’s tone in the lead vocalist( Linda turner) on this tune. If Beyoncé had to redo this, I think she’d stick to the same top line melody and approach the lead exactly like this. To me they were the destiny’s child of the 70’s. They really knew how to hold a harmony. If Sheila didn’t leave, they’d be still making records and having hits till this day. But once a significant feature/member leaves a brand product like (The Three Degrees) it’s considered not the same quality…and is then discarded for something new. No matter who replaced Shiela, it just wasn’t the same. That decision cost this incredible vocal group dearly. Sheila’s on tour singing solo and still sounds amazing. I think It’s only just hit her just how successful they were. It’s understandable due to the amount of work they had to put in back then. I can imagine they never really had time for anything else. They started in the 60’s and lasted to the late 70’s, So I understand Shiela’s decision to try and fit in a normal regular existence. So she could have time bringing up her kids and spend time being a real wife and a good mother. But that meant the group was no more.😟🫤
