In my head-canon, no matter what they look like on the outside, each Doctor imagines themselves as Hartnell in their own minds.

One of the headcanons I have ascribed to for many years is that the deference to the First Doctor is because he is the closest to their upbringing, to the core Gallifreyan logic, and to an extent, the least chaotic (vs the others with all their wild adventuring).

I think the first three multi Doctor stories really have Troughton rising to the fore! Yes, Pertwee's clearly the lead here but Troughton's just so charming and watchable, his Jamie-esque relationship with Benton really working!

As a viewer Since 1963 I'm old enough to remember the absolute excitement of viewing this when it first aired. At the age of 15 & technically too cool for Doctor Who this was the dogs bollocks. As an adult I acknowledge the flaws and Cheap as Chips budget. However nothing can diminish the enjoyment I still experience watching this gem. Lovely thoughts from yourself Chris👍

My ten year old son saw this two years ago when he was eight and thought the cheap and gaudy sets were "beautiful." He immediately fell in love with the story. He was also unnerved by the bubble wrap transformation from Ark in Space. So, the budget limitations don't seem to put off younger kids who can still get lost in it all.

@@shawnstevens9819that's fantastic there is definitely a magic that captures the inner child in us. It's wonderful to know it still works

Also,Hartnell's Doctor was a proper authority figure who'd grown up on Gallifrey so knew a lot

Apparently he held some crazy parties in the Time Academy dorms. He used to DJ and everything!

Great point about Troughton, like Delgado, upping Pertwee's game. And the relationship between the regulars is fantastic! What makes this work is that it does something the show has never done before - then ends with a return to time and space travel!

so sad that this was the final story to feature william hartnell, i'm glad he got to appear, even if it was briefly, i know the writers planned to have his doctor appear in part 4 and confront Omega together but hartnell's health meant he couldn't do it

I love the three doctors so much! Does the story make sense? Not really, does it feel like it NEEDS three doctors? Not really. But it’s so much fun and I love Omega as a villain so much that it shoots into my top Pertwee stories. (Plus it was the first Pertwee story, and my fist experience with Troughton so it’s got a special place for me) Really excited for big finish’s adaptation of “deathworld” the original story idea that comes out later this month!

The first (and possibly best) televised multi-Doctor story. It is an incredibly fun episode held together mostly due to the performances of Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton and their Doctors Banter. The villain Omega was a really neat addition to the lore and I still reckon he should pop back up sometime in New Who, the ending reveal that Omega is trapped in his own dimension due to not having a "real" presence anymore is good and doesn't feel handwavey and the visual of him lifting his helmet to reveal nothing's underneath is seared into my brain as one of the most iconic moments in Who. I also enjoy the brief fight scene 3 has with Omega, yeah its random as hell and out of place but it ends up being a bit of joke like of course they'd have 3 have a fight with him,, he's the action Doctor. I think the only two real let downs for me were Omega's generic blobby henchman, they look really cheap and it's hard to suspend my disbelief when compared to other classic who villains (somehow bubble wrap can look more realistic and believable than these jobbers). I also would have like William Hartnell in the story more. I completely understand why he isn't and it seems like a miracle they got anything of him at all in it based on what I heard about the behind the scenes stories, but it does leave you wishing there was more.

The three doctors was excellent imo. It proves that the show could bring back major elements from the past without forever getting stuck on them. Not a perfect story but a very fun one.

This is a big milestone! Next stop: The Five Doctors. As for the deference to the First Doctor, I've always seen it like you in that he's the blueprint, but also #1 still lived for hundreds of years, eventually passing of old age. So he could still be considered old and wise despite technically being the youngest.

I wonder if Chris will only review the original broadcast version of The Five Doctors or if the extended cut found on the DVDs will get covered as well

They knew how to celebrate an anniversary back in the day. So much fun although as a kid I had trouble believing it actually WAS Hartnell.

To this day it's the only multi-Doctor story to actually bring back Hartnell. The closest the show's been able to do since then was in the 50th when a photo of him was seen in the final shot.

The Three Doctors was the first story I remember I was six. I don't know who (no pun) had it better, thee or I, it was new for me, but something you knew about

In 1968, The Small Faces (great Band of Mod-Lads) had an album "There are but Four Small Faces"! By 1972-73, "There are but Three Doctors"! 😎

Yeah I really like the 3 doctors for the exact reasons stated. It’s not a great story by any means, but it is so much fun

I just really wish Chibnal would have went with something more like the Cartmel master plan. An entity that through its own decisions created the Doctor out of itself so it could continue on unburdened by its past as a founding member if timelord society, alongside rassilon and omega. Just fits the lore so much better and shows a dedication to that lore that chibnal obviously didn't. I was so excited by Jodie's tenure but just story after story was just more and more disappointing. And I think it all comes together with the timeless children. A good idea, tortured in its execution.

My only major issue with this story is how the human characters become almost entirely redundant in the anti-matter universe, there are far too many of them than is necessary. I'd understand Jo and the Brigadier being there (though the Brig doesn't get up to much, I'd probably put him in Benton's place), but to pile on the likes of Benton, Tyler, Ollis as well, it's just too many characters for them to just not do anything of value, just like you said about time wasting, I'd much rather spend more time with the Doctors than worrying about what Mr Ollis is doing to be quite honest.
