Stephan, you are one of the most humble and learned BJJ practitioners I know. Thank you for inviting speakers to your KZbin channel, and never seeming to be intimidated by their knowledge. Thank you.

My favorite thing about BJJ is how you can learn something you think is very basic, use it for years, and then someone will break it down to its most efficient form. You will walk away feeling like you just learned a new move. Standing in base was one of the first things I learned in martial arts and I have not given it much thought. The way Rob broke it down in this vid is really good.

Thanks Brian, I try to teach this concept and movement in all my seminars and have had many participants echo your sentiment, always gratifying to hear. All the best, Rob

Have you seen the video where Rickson teaches a black belt how to roll out of the bottom of the mount? It's the first lesson in the Gracie Combatives but even a black belt wasn't doing it properly. I forgot the guy's name but it was somebody who does a podcast and had a KZbin channel.
@makeitfromnothing86727 жыл бұрын
It is funny that you mention that. I went to a seminar where a black belt under Rickson broke down the uppa roll to get maximum torque and it blew our minds. Then he started to do it from side control and north south. Sorry for waiting 10 months to respond, I was just reviewing this video as a refresher.

The body structure / alignment is so you can do this: Engagement of multiple muscle groups to have more leverage to move your opponent or escape (EX. When gripping each other’s wrist: Difference between turning your wrist (your wrist strength vs theirs) and simultaneously engaging your core, through your shoulder, through your elbow, through your wrist- to rotate their grip). Ex2 trying to bench someone off mount vs hip thrust + push. Ex3 Reaching for an ankle vs side crunch

I've been drilling this version of the technical stand up for the past year during injury layoff. First time rolling again and it worked a treat, and I nailed a single leg take down off it because my posture was right and weight was over my front knee.

Thank you very much for the video. Those concepts are very important and necessary to explain in BJJ. Regarding live/dead toes, this works with even matched weight and lighter opponents. If the weight difference is too great, that concept dies and so will your toes.

Very informative and explained..I took jujitsu from an airman in 1980 for just under a year..it really was a help all my life and have used it a couple times..however it was the concept of leverage that stuck with me forever!
@lnstantn00d1e2 жыл бұрын
Hello Stephan, You asked a good question about how someone can know a priori whether any particular movement they are employing has proper base, structure, and posture. Robs answer was essentially there is no way to know a priori but rather a posteriori i.e. mat time/trial and error. I agree with Rob if by knowledge in the specific context in jiu-jitsu he means executing the movement during drilling, live sparring, or fighting. I disagree, however if knowledge has a wider interpretation, since I can have a conceptual understanding of a movement while failing to execute the movement. If you're willing, I'd love to hear back from you about your own view about a priori knowledge of proper base, structure, and posture or possibly Rob's response to my concerns with this view. Best, -InstantNoodle

i know im honing in on a very small detail that doesn't undermine the point being made, but heavy single arm presses are actually done with a lateral lean, i think so that the force vector is directly over and perpendicular to the center of mass.

This is similar to aikido ground work. I could apply it naturally into bjj rolling in my beginners class. It was relatively easy to get away from bigger opponent with similar foot work. Defending from those postures works fine. A lot of jumping drills and squatting improves your ability to keep a good posture. Nice to notice something common between bjj and aiki-do/jutsu.

Priceless video. Amazing content, free! 🤙💪 ...curious for opinions. Is there 1 single component (out of the 3) that trumps the others? i.e. IF one HAD to use these concepts in defence, is it possible to prioritise one or the 3. My thoughts at the minute... To attack ones posture, we need to dismantle the structure (if needed - grips/frames etc) To attack the base, I need to destroy my opponents posture. When Posture and Base do not "exist"... It should be relatively straightforward to reverse or sweep.

@@helpme1376 3 years late, but size matters in everything. imagine a clone of yourself, all of the same experience and technique, but that clone weighs 50 lbs more than you. Youd get bullied by size. Thats not to say size is the end all be all, but its a big factor

He said "unfortunately, mat time" when asked how to get a feel for how to apply this to various techniques ... your fired bah... lol (Your not supposed to relate to the people looking for quick and easy BJJ, your suppose to disillusion them with the truth ... not the truth that it's gonna take a time investment... you did well with that, but the truth that mat time is the funnest part of BJJ.) I hope it takes a millenia to get my first dan on my white belt, that way there's enough mat time when I get my black belt... okay so it's not like you just stop rolling, there'll be plenty of mat time after too... but that just illiterates the point further, no need to rush through belts if your rolling for life anyway.

@DanTheWolfman7 жыл бұрын
Where is vid of that? Because everything he is teaching as if knew information not always paid attn to in BJJ, is all Systema concepts that have been taught for forever....you know, since some of them really were Rocket Scientist/Physics masters. Good vid here, except that what is a technical standup from a structural standpoint, isn't so technical when not making space so you don't get hit on way up, which was the primary focus of real bjj. ...so what he showed is the technical sport standup
