I think we sometimes forget just how many people are completely disconnected from "gaming" as a whole. These F2P cellphone things are all they know. It entertains them and they're alright with it even if it is exploitative. Not much to be done about it.

These type of games cost very little money to make and maintain, so a lot of the money can go toward marketing.

They also appeal to way more people then those other games. Plus cellphones far outnumber game consoles in sheer number. They're also free.

George Barry Well and I feel like barring the very rare good mobile release, we've already worked through the good ones. Now it's just occasional functional ports from PC or handheld of old games (Baldur's Gate, for example, or Phoenix Wright), maybe the occasional microtransaction-free management game (Kairosoft games are a good bet. I played Game Dev Story probably far too much when I should've been paying attention to classes in high school).

The music playing around 21:30 sounds suspiciously similar to the music that Blizzard played in the background during the Hearthstone world championship, which, if I remember correctly, is tavern music from WoW. Also a lot of characters from that game seem oddly similar to DotA characters.

I kind of enjoy Clash of Clans because although it's a free to play game. You don't have to put a cent into it. All it really does is accelerate your progress. Any defense and unit can be bought with in game currency and pay 2 winners who upgrade their town halls super fast can't shit all over free to plays because the town halls level effects who you can invade, be invaded by, and what your buildings and units you are limited to.

Gotta be honest, I have played a lot of Travian a few years back and the first 2 games very much remind me of it. And a lot of the game concepts behind these games are really solid IMO and can be really fun and rewarding. The monetization has just gotten completely out of hand and the challenging aspects have been removed destroying the game. But time as a resource makes for a pretty enjoyable, if obviously time consuming, experience.

Maybe the reason people pay into these games so much is because they want the shit off their screen. Stupid I know as it's there own doing but hey. I am glad I don't play these games as, there isn't much of an actual game in there. You pay to not play the game...that you want to play. It's silly and as Jeff said: "What the fuck is going on?!" I don't know. EDIT: These games remind me of slot machines in casinos.

(disclaimer: english is not my fisrt lenguage sorry)I cant speak about the other two games, but i have been playing and enjoing Clash of Clans more than any other videogame for the last year. And before all of you "real" and "hardcore" gamers get reall though and angry at me let me explain. First of all I AM a "real" gamer or at least I used to be, I have owned or played every single console and a huge variety of videogames preaty much until the ps4 era from JRPGs, shooters, point and click adventures I love videogames and I enjoy playng them more than almoust anything else... That was untill I became an adult , right now I am beggining my masters of engineering in manufacturing , working full time for Daimler, doing a cert in CAE-CAM, plus personal life. I literally come home phisically and mentally exahusted every single day to play any "real" game, I have used my ps4 only for Netflix for 6 months or more, I have bought about 10 games most of which i havent even touched. And that brings us to CoC I downloaded this game about 18 month ago and played it esporadically whenever I had a break or before going to bed and I have come to enjoy it very vey much without spending a cent on it and not to make this any longer here are the reasons:-People I know play it, even though I am or was a gamer I never had gamer friends but still may coworkers, friends from school and even my brother enjoy and play this game with me this is a first for me and I love it. - The game IS GOOD and well made, appart from the microtransactios it works perfectly,is very well balanced, designed, constantly upgraded and with an impecable tech support, it has many smart ideas, systems and listens to its comunity. This is more that what I can say about "real" games of which many have been a mess recenlty.(or so I have read) - Its the definition of accesibility, I own a VITA but I havent touched it in a year, the time and mind energy I have for games is limited and this is a perfect fit for me. - In conclusion this game has more users and its more profitable than almost anything else out there and is not by chance or because some secret adictive druglike quality. Its because SuperCell is defenitely doing something right here, the game is great and constantly improving, its targeting real common people, and it is growing. And all of you "real" gamers and developers should take a lesson from this and put much more effort on this AAA releases, honestly looking at all new "real" games nothing seems even worth my time even if I had time. if you dont want a future where CoC games take over the world, which will probably happen anyways.Step up your game and stop complaining. I've downloaded several mobile games now that look nice on the surface, but then you actually play them and find out all you do is really just clicking on stuff while the game (combat especially) just plays itself. That's incredibly boring, I don't even feel like I'm in control, I'm just guiding the AI and not really participating at all.

Game of War: Wow, it really is incredibly similar to gambling machines in aesthetic, isn't it. UI makes me think of early 00s RPGs. The idea of these games isn't new, I remember playing something similar on my iPhone 4 a few years ago. I feel like there was a popular smurfs game in a similar vein at one point.

My guess is most of the players of these F2P games are teenagers. Most teens have no real money but plenty of time to grind; the whales are the 1% spoiled rich teens with no sense of value for their money.
