How do you plan on capturing that energy, and how will you turn it into a practical form of electricity? Also even if/when ignition is achieved is the design going to be able to be built and maintained cheaply enough to be a commercially viable as a power plant? That being said, even if there no business case for ever building more of these, the scientific and technological advancements from building this one are still going to be incredible.

even if NIF broke even and exceeded the energy output of the energy needed to fire the shot, and a method is planned / figured out to capture that energy, even today, we're only at the point of a minimum of 5 to 20+ years before reaching fusion as an energy source. When did Fission research become advanced enough to make nuclear reactors? that was a long time between the 2. We're at the part where we are proving PHYSICALLY that its even viable to attain the goal of a fusion reactor at all.

How do you turn off / put out a cascade of self-sustaining fusion reactions??
@Jeremiah-mj9kw2 жыл бұрын
Stop heating it. It'll immediately cool the plasma and expand into nothing. If it somehow manages to keep going, which should be impossible, flood the chamber with a non-fusible material, or at least something that takes way too much energy to fuse. Some stars end up doing that eventually as they accidentally make iron.
@theeomix2 жыл бұрын
Basically you break the reactions confinement and the plasma dissipates safely as plain old heat with no nasty radioactive elements that fission would create if you’ve used hydrogen and helium3 to initiate ignition.

What scares me is the current crowd in power will figure out a way to attach all kinds of strings to this. Cut off access if states or other countries don't comply with a list of demands.

i had the same thought and concerns and then i realised that maybe a caveman a long long time ago when he/she found how to start a fire, maybe had the same concerns. Fire is still here in benefit of man kind. Science is here for the benefit of man kind. The crowd in power will not preveil at the end.

Laser ignition fusion will never be the route to commercial electrical generation. It isn't intended to be and is not why the NIF was created.

@@winstonsmith478 I think you are 100% correct. Objectively speaking, NIF must have been created to consume copious amounts of taxpayer dollars and keep a lot of people perpetually employed. I could be wrong, so please fill in anything I missed about why NIF was created.

@@winstonsmith478 not really, compared with high B-field TOKAMAK, icf does have its commercial value, anyway, it is way too earlier to say it has commercial value, feasible fusion reactors are still beyond current humans’ scope.
