Another cute and fascinating category would be the Linernotes😂 In the 50's and 60's most Albums had linernotes, usually run of the mill advertising. But there were exceptions: the Kinks and Dean Martin had hilarious liner notes, very funny😅. The Beatles had sometimes prophetic liner notes (Beatles for Sale) and the Stones had the most outrageous liner notes, written by their manager Andrew Loog Oldham: "The Rolling Stones are a way of life" Or in the case of the Rolling Stones No 2 a text that would surely be outlawed today : " See the blind man, rob him so you can buy this new platter"...

That would be a great category!

I think "I Saw Her Standing There" is easily more iconic than "Love Me Do," not that it would've changed the score in that particular category.

My personal favorite of all of these is the Kinks debut album, even though all of the albums are pretty close for me

I know the Dave Clarke Five don’t get much love now, but back in 1963/4 they were as popular as the Beatles, I actually brought the UK’s, Dave Clarke Five-A Session With The Dave Clarke Five, album debut in 1964, there was one track that stood out to me, there version of Link Wray’s Rumble 🎉. Oh and another weird fact, every track is different on the US 🇺🇸 debut version! I guess you could do an American 60’s band version, even trying to think which 4 bands you would choose would be interesting. Obviously Beach Boys and Byrds not sure after that 🤔

Fun idea for a video, really enyoyed. Maybe deducting points for people dying is a touch harsh? lol. Stuart

It was not considerate to their bandmates for them to die. Points deducted!

Really interesting video, and a very interesting way to look at the ranking. On one of the deduction categories I thought you were a bit unfair though - the one where you deducted points for the bands who'd lost original members during their existence - particularly unfair on the Stones who lost Charlie Watts aged 80! I think it would have been fairer to give points for how long the original band members stayed together. Having said that, I think the Beatles deserve big bonus points for being the pioneers.

Technically Charlie wasn't original, there were a few different drummers in 1962 before Charlie joined in January 1963. Mick and Keith are the two ever present members.

True, but I was using the personnel on the debut albums as the starting point.

I like the Kinks debut the best out of those four.

My Generation is quite possibly the greatest original single off of any band's debut album. While I find it difficult to disagree with the final results, which I knew would really be close between The Beatles and The Who, given the limited scope of 'Debut Albums', some of those categories seemed particularly geared to favor The Beatles. I demand an investigation!

Perhaps. But as far as my personal preferences, I am a bigger fan of the other three than The Beatles. But the impact of their debut, the fact that they came first...hard to beat as far as debuts go.

Capitol butchered a lot of Beatles albums. Two times they improved. MMT and Meet. Meet the Beatles was genius sequencing with the iconic Astridesque cover shot. And that original American salvo was by far the strongest, as well as first. I Want to Hold Your Hand and Twist & Shout truly invaded the US. (Of course V-Jay owned the material first, but waited on their album.)

Entertaining exercise. I don't follow the logic of deducting a point for every band member who was not there at the end. That has no bearing on the quality of the debut album. What you might have done is give the bands points for longevity. In that case the orders would be completely reversed. Why should the stones, who are still a going concern in 2024 be penalized because two of their members died and one left, whereas the Beatles, who broke up in 1970 get no deductions? I would deduct points from the Beatles who broke up after less than a decade of recording vs. all the other bands like the Who and Stones who lasted over 50 years longer! All that being said I don't disagree with your final order.

I never claimed to be logical. But yes, longevity would be a good one.
