Ok since there are still some misconceptions about the tiger II I'm gonna throw my hat in too. Germany needed a new tank and the Heereswaffenamt offered a contract to anyone who could provide a promising hull design that fits their needs. Porsche and Henschel both designed a hull, the turret design was a Krupp project from the beginning and they first designed the turret that would later be called the P turret. Porsche thought they would definitely win with their hull design and get the contract for the tiger II and started to produce 50 P turrets to avoid any delays in the later tank production but they did not win. Henschel did and Henschel got the contract. Meanwhile Krupp designed a better turret ( H turret ) but it wasn't ready for production yet. Therefore the already built P turrets ( designed by Krupp, built by Porsche ) were used on the first 50 hulls that Henschel had designed and produced. All of the other later turrets were the better H turrets and were most likely built by Henschel but I can't confirm that as I can't find a document that says exactly who built the H turrets. Just that Henschel was tasked with the tiger II production but that most likely means hulls and turrets. In short: from my understanding the company that designed the better hull would eventually get the contract for the entire tiger II production but the turret design was provided by Krupp. Porsche's hull design wasn't chosen but they thought it would and bring them the tiger II production contract. Therefore they started to produce the earlier P turret design that Krupp made. I can't find any document confirming that P stands for prototype or Porsche and H for Herstellung or Henschel. So until someone can show me a document that confirms anything I will go with "unclear what P and H actually stand for" but my guess would be that it stands for the company that produced the turret because the same was done with other products with more than one design and multiple producers.

You are only partially correct. Gaijin in typical Gaijin fashion got the names wrong due to all the misinformation surrounding the turrets, thats it. They are not prototype turrets, the rounded turrets are the first iteration of the Tiger II turret, it was replaced by the later more square turret just like how the Schmalturm replaced the standard Panther turret on the Ausf F. The turrets in both cases were replaced as the narrow face replacements were far cheaper, easierand faster to produce ,stronger and provided a far smaller frontal target. They were designed as breakthrough tanks to replace the Tiger I not as some propaganda peice, although they were featured in many films for that purpose just like most German tanks. They were always meant to be used in combat which is why they were. The only Tiger II that were not intended for comabt were the first 3 prototypes as they were made of mild steel not hardened armour steel. The second prototype, V2 still exists and is the only remaining pre-production turret Tiger II in the world, it has recently returned to Bovington tank museum after being loaned to a number of mainland European museums.

Actually, calling it a Porsche turret is fine. For Tiger 2, two prototype hulls were proposed, one by Henschel and one by Porsche. Krupp made the Henschel turret for the Heschel hull (which won in trials) and the Porsche turret for the Porsche hull.

I saw someone else say the P *does* stand for Porsche since the prototype for tanks in Germany at the time were called VKs, heck, 2 prototypes are in the game already, the prototype Tiger I (P) and the Proto-Panther
@friedyzostas99983 ай бұрын
@@I_want_White_Cheddar_Popcorn "The prototype Tiger 2" only has the prototype turret, and not the prototype hull. We already have the renowned Henschel turret on top of the Henschel hull, but only WoT has the Porsche turret on top of the Porsche hull, which would make an alternative Tiger 2 prototype.

This is a lie, the P stands for the Porsche turret.

@@Nitrous_oxide_addict It's not even Porsches turret btw, the tank itself was rejected but the turret made by Krupp (but for Porsche) was later used in normal Tiger 2s with a slight modification.

Not completely correct. Porche being the tank genius he thought he had decided to preorder the early turrets, well fortunately/unfortunately he lost and the 50 early turrets he ordered were instead used for the first batch of production Tiger II.
@notinmyairspace3 ай бұрын
The P stands for Porsche. Porsche was confident their VK 45.02 would be chosen, so they startet production of the turrets. However it would be Henschels design wich would be choosen. Since Porsche already set up a production line for their turrets, they just produced both Tiger II variants at the same time until they they closed Porsches production line in 1944. Although Krupp designed the turrets, they would be designated „Porsche Turret“.

Just adding a bit to your comment Both Porsche and Henschel VK45.02 (Tiger II) was cancelled and only last for 6 month (April-October 1942) , because Wa Prüf 6 choose Henschel VK45.03 (Tiger II) for production instead, and Tiger III was rename into Tiger II later in 3rd March 1943 And just like you said, Krupp already made 50 turret for Porsche, so they just converted and reuse it later for 50 Tiger II, hence the myth "Porsche Turret"

Wrong The (P) stands for Porsche since they were the first ones to get the contract of making a new Tiger, the same with various other prototypes which were designed by Porsche. Vk means Versuchskonstruktion, which could be roughly translated to Prototype. The same goes for H-Henschel, M-Man, D-Daimler and so on.
