The Tiktok Trend that is Ruining Reading.

I noticed a co-worker reading at work and discovered it's a TikTok trend claiming reading makes you more attractive. Curious, I checked TikTok and found many clips of people pretending to read in cafes for hours. Is it for attention, views, or potential partners? While reading has great mental benefits, pretending doesn’t count. Why are people romanticizing reading? Let's discuss!

the main difference here seems to be people pretending to do it for hours on end. in the past, people just claimed they've read things that they haven't. sitting at a cafe and pretending to read though, seems like brain rot

I read fiction, pretty well exclusively. It's not just escapeism for me, there is an art to a well told story, in the author's ability to invoke imagery, to craft believeable and relatable characters, to explore themes and ideals that might acutally inspire people. I love sinking into a new world, a new perspective, and sometimes familiar tropes. I read voraciously! That's why I did my degrees in literature. This "trend", although honestly it's been happening since forever, is just a new iteration of pickup artists. They are shallow and/or insecure, and will, in turn, attract the same because what they don't realize is this: people who legitimately read are going to want to talk about books with them. And we can clock them pretty quickly because there's always a type of book they gravitate to, and they can only discuss it on the most shallow of levels. They want to appear more intelligent, deep, interesting, but they're literally the kid in class trying to BS their way through an essay or a question the teacher has asked about a book they never actually read. I love when people read because they enjoy learning, or because they enjoy it! But seriously, developing a personality is going to give greater success in dating than pretending to read.

As someone who fucking hates reading books with every cell in his body, it feels good just to cut the shit and talk about how much I hate it. It feels good to just be who you are, and not put up a front to seem more intelligent than you actually are.

This is just sad. People seem increasingly allergic to doing the things that are connected to a certain identity and instead just try to appear to do them. It was already bad enough that people have always done things to obfuscate who they truly ARE (appearing to read is removed from reading endless non-fiction with no action is removed from understanding and engaging with the subject up close)

People romanticised this way before tiktok. Reading is appreciating an art form, appreciating and analysing to understand the world and ideas of another individual. Understandable that people find it "attractive", considering intelligence is an attractive trait. However it's sad that some people don't actually read to read and enjoy a book and an author's writing, but simply to look "hot" or "aesthetic". But I don't think it's that big of a deal, it's just one of those trends that some people pull.

Great video! I was just wondering, what books do you recommend for someone trying to get into non-fiction?
@MRbookworm
@MRbookworm 3 ай бұрын
It entirely depends on what you are wanting to learn. When I started I knew I needed to learn about money so I looked up popular money books non fiction and rich dad poor dad came up. I prefer reading books that will help me to become more productive like feel-good productivty and atomic habits 2 solid productivity books and to get better at communication, like how to win friends and influence people and influence. What do you want to learn then look up that topic with non fiction beginner at the end. Try not to look for the perfect book there seems to be a big trend right now that only some books are good and others are bad but you will learn something from every book you read so don't worry if you read a "bad" one to start. Good luck

I think people should romanticize reading. It's a healthy hobby, and if there are people out there dumb enough to think reading a book makes them look attractive, then maybe they'll actually learn something when they finally quit it for a moment to read the thing they're holding. Even if they don't, who cares? Reading will always looked at as positive.

In my opinion, he made a good call to end things. He handled it very maturely because he understands she has her own life and shouldn't be going backwards in it to appease him. Mature guy dantes is, aside from all the goofy stuff he says. tbh you and this comment section need better reading comprehension.
