I think I understand why they took it out of context. In Africa, women's value is often tied to marriage and married women are respected more. Also, some married women feel superior than single women. So maybe, she thought that you were saying that you can only advise married women because you felt single ladies were not worth your while. But of course, it doesn't justify the amount of backlash especially, after you explained where you were coming from.
