This morning we sat down and did the ‘final financial plan’ through the end of the year. Being retired, the final quarter is tricky… Our taxes went through the roof, insurance at the beach house skyrocketed and my husband had to have 7,000$ in dental work…. Preparing to finish the year well takes great planning and prayer.

I am still canning tomatoes for winter. Have 100 onions braided and hanging in the cellar and have already canned carrots and pickles. I have crockpot meals in the freezer, beef stew and chicken fajitas, along with a couple homemade pizzas and a chicken noodle casserole. We have frozen corn this summer also. We have gas stored for the generator in case we lose electricity and I have ten quarts of drinkable water canned in case we lose water or get a boil order. I loved having a stocked pantry just gives peace of mind we won't starve to death if we get a shelter in place order from the government.

A great prep and cost-saving measure would be for you to grow your own garlic. It requires little effort. You'll need to buy a few LOCALLY-GROWN heads of garlic. Ideally you should get organic garlic, meaning it hasn't been sprayed to avoid sprouting. Health-food markets or farmer's markets are a good source. Gently separate the heads into cloves, leaving the paper-like wrappings on. You plant it pointy-side up and 3-4 inches deep in late October or early November. Water it in well and add some mulch on top, and then leave it to grow. If we have no rain for an extended period, you could water it well a couple of times per month. It will send up shoots in the spring. You can pinch off and cook with the garlic scapes (super curly bits that grow on top of some varieties). Leave the rest of the leaves intact. Once the leaves start to die back (probably in May, June, or July), it's time to harvest. You gently dig around the heads and remove them, then lightly brush off extra soil. Don't clean off thoroughly. Leave the heads with stalks intact on a tabletop or cool area with space between to harden up. After a couple of weeks, brush off the rest of the soil, and store the heads it in a cool (not fridge) well-ventilated space. You'll love the taste and it's easy. It makes a lovely gift too. I've just learned to do water-bath canning and my friends have enjoyed gifts of bounty from the garden. Garlic grows best in a garden bed, but you can plant it in a large planter if you wish. Plant the cloves with about 3" between. Si mangia bene!

Oh! And I did a massive declutter of my closet and bureau. I do this each year but holy moly over the past year I had accumulated so many items from gifts or giveaways at events, and I ended up donating 6 bags worth of stuff. So many socks, purses, shopping bags, t-shirts, exercise pants, mittens, gloves, hats, etc. My brother works for an athletic shoe company and he gives me sneakers all the time. I rotate them so I don’t put too much wear and tear on them at once but my goodness, I had over 20 pairs!! I donated the older ones (which were still in perfect condition) and from now on I’ve decided if I am given a new pair, I have to donate another pair. Same w/ other items I get but don’t need. If I get a purse, one has to go. T-shirt? One has to go. Etc. I try to tell people experience gifts are my fav but you do still get stuff from people and it is lovely and so kind. But if it’s just sitting in the closet because I have plenty of a similar item, I feel like someone else could be benefitting from the use vs collecting dust. So, if something new comes in, something else needs to go. I had the most euphoric feeling when the closet and bureau were de-cluttered and organized and there was nothing left that was not being used.

Right now, to live beneath our means on one income, we think ahead 6 months. Just finished all things holidays. Presents, decorations, table covers, serving trays, new year's, etc. Then will sort them put aside. Only will need to pay for the food closer to the days. Each person (24 including kids) will get a re-usable Christmas grocery bag with many different small items dependent on age.. and then we will raffle off with trivia questions 10 better collectible type presents. Each of the kids (nieces, nephews) gets inheritance gifts, one kid per year. This year is fun for me as the tween coming up is an adopted Native American. Fall/winter is higher electric bills, taxes so we try to do everything in advance prepare for the upcoming season. Also, a great time of year to clear out and downsize. Once my target for holiday food budget is met in the next 2-3 paychecks, all the next money goes into savings to prepare for the yearly charges that come due in Jan/Feb. Really striving to pay all 2025 tax bills including school upfront and have a lot of padding for my 3-month emergency fund.

When I was a kid, we had an oil burner for our heat source. Mom used to cook things on top of it all day to save electricity. Made me think of making sure you always have foods on hand that require no cooking if the power goes out or something you can heat up quickly in a fire pit or on a grill. What are we doing for the future? We had our deck repainted to get more years out of it. First, the house and deck got power washed. Then we had our aggregate sidewalk and driveway sealed so it will last longer. Yes, these things cost money, but we figured it was an investment to maintaining our home. I’ve started crocheting some Christmas gifts. I eat gluten free, so I like to make a yummy casserole in a 9x13 dish, then freeze entree portions for quick meals so that I won’t be tempted to buy the expensive ready-made gluten free meals. I like your idea for checking thrift stores now for winter gear! ❤-Brenda

When that is done, I will be restocking it with family-sized chicken drumstick packs, family-sized chicken breasts, family-sized ground beef packs, family-sized pre-made hamburger patties. I will freeze the patties individually. I will batch cook most of the other meats and freeze them in individual portions. I will also make an easy chicken stew, and freeze it in individual portions. That’s my favourite sauce to make. I use it as a soup base and to cook meatballs in as well. So good! that pot is my bff! Its my go to for canning too it seals jars in 5 mins 4 at a time. I can’t believe the prices you pay its unreal to me. Our pasta is not less than $2.49 a pack for cheaper pasta like Barilla or Catelli. Del Verde or De Checco is $4 a bag!!! I used to buy pasta by the dozen for $1.29. I am blown away. I can’t understand how we are getting gouged constantly. Most Canadians are eating 1x a day and a little breakfast. Fast food is $22 for a trio… the golden arches. Yet you still see lineups there. Starbucks is $10 for a med latte. Breakfast is around $20 for 2 eggs toast and sausage. The cheese you bought is $7-$9 here each. Yogurt is $7 it used to be $2.99. But is fixed at $7-$9 now never going down. Cream is expensive and to make butter it costs more though you get buttermilk too if you make your own. Eggs went down a little u can get 18 for $9.99 now. I make my own oatmilk when I can because its now $4.88 1.2 ltrs. Margarine got very expensive! $8.99 and it was $2.99-$3.99 before. Sadly olive oil is still $24.99 a litre so I have to use butter or veggie oil. I need to can soon. I usually make pickles, tomato relish, rhubarb jam, orange peach jam, pesto garlic, eggplants, caponata and ketchup. But this year I gotta take it easier. Upcoming surgery will put me out til January. Im afraid of not getting it all done. I have tried to organize a little per day but my crafting supplies makes it impossible. Its a crafting explosion here. I will freeze this winter again. Hydro is too expensive. I have no fireplace. But I wanted to build one eventually. Buying wood is expensive but not like paying hydro. I must find a way to heat aside electric. Im so frugal, I am reusing cling wrap. Reusing tea bags twice like during the war. I make meatballs with more breading to make more for at least 6x meals. I never throw coffee out I put it in the fridge for next day, or dye fabric and paper with leftovers. I use coffee grounds in compost and the filters cleaned brushed off and reused in crafting journals. I will start cutting shrubs in advance for compost so by October I will not be overwhelmed. I will try canning before the end of August. I will also try to declutter knowing Christmas decor will be going up in 2 months ( ahead of surgery). I want to see my tree while I’m healing. It brings me joy. I will also prep my fall decor soon and start swapping decor out. Its so short might as well add fall now to enjoy it. And make pumpkin pie! last fall I did not make it more than once!

Not sure where you live in Canada but as a fellow Cdn I am not seeing anyone near me only eating one meal a day and a bit of breakfast. I never go to the Golden Arches so I do not know what the price is. But the my niece treated me to a latte at Starbucks last month and it was 5$ . I prefer making very good coffee at home! Also I went grocery shopping today and paid less than what you mentioned for milk based products example yogurt in the 750 grams tubs was 3.99 and the lactose free one which I buy was 5.79. I saw lots of people stocking up. Butter was on big sale last week ie 4$ so I froze for future use. Local Celery was 79 cents and cucumbers were 44 cents. 5 lbs on onions, turnips, carrots or beets was 1.85 for each 5 lb bag. Big sales at my local drugstore on toilet paper and tissues. I am lucky that I pay the lowest hydro rates in North America but I do pay higher taxes on other things. I am also lucky to have several grocery stores around me so completion is good! I hope the prices near you get better .

You are going to get a kick out of this. Ms. Anti-Instant Pot (finger pointing at myself) broke down and got one when my slow cooker died. I got a Ninja Foodi which is a multi-use cooker that allows you to air fry, pressure cook, dehydrate, sautee, slow cook, steam, broil, and a whole host of other features. I figured it would be more economical in the end despite a bigger up front cost as it can do so much. Also using it as opposed to the oven to save on energy I figured would be worth it, especially in the hot summer months. So far, I made baked “fried” chicken and it came out so good!! I was very pleased. I’m excited to try out more recipes. I think it will end up being such a time saver and being so versatile I can use it for a variety of cooking methods. I did get it on sale too! Yay! I did my research. My sister-in-law uses hers all the time and was extolling the virtues of it to me. I did some research and thought, “eh what the heck.” Anyhow…thought you’d get a kick out of that. Great tips today and I love the idea of keeping some cash in the house. I hadn’t thought about that. I’m so reliant on Apple Pay. But you’re right…if there is an outage or if I need access to cash but can’t get to an ATM, it’s good to have a little saved at home to use if the need arises. Now is about the time I stock up on holiday baking ingredients. And I loved the tip about preserving food. Our farms are at peak and I’ve started to Foodsaver some local veggies, fruits to have on hand for fall/winter. Local produce is wonderful to have available in your freezer when it is not in season.

I am watching clearance sales for gifts. I have already found some perfect gifts for Christmas on clearance (like cute Swedish dish cloths 3/50 cents!) and I am writing down what I buy plus the price and putting them in a box in our closet. I'm also going through our over the counter meds to be sure we have what we need. Helping my 83 year old mom who is a new widow do that too. You also reminded me that our son needs a heavy winter coat, so I'm going to be on the lookout for that. I must be part squirrel because I love storing up things for the near future! LOL! :)

This coming week we're doing the mutliple repairs on my car so its in good working order for the winter. We moved to a rural area with spotty cell service so its gotta be in reliable condition. We're doing 90% of the repairs ourselves to save money and only bringing into the dealership to have recall work done, which is free. We made a list of all the work needed and each month we're doing a job in priority order. So, next week is the airbag recall, blower motor, & headlights. Next month is new plugs, wires, and full oil change and filter etc. We've got about 5 months worth of work to do on her, but it's way more frugal to repair her then buy something else.

Thank you for another great video. I grew up in Vermont and I know how treacherous weather can be. I have lived in the Sonoran Desert for over 55 years. It doesn't matter how warm it is in September. When September rolls around and shadows are getting longer the soup pot comes out. It is as ingrained in me as waking up with the roosters once was. The first soup will be cream cheese and cabbage - my husband's favorite.

@@LauraMacMillan-el2kc Saute some onions. Add chopped cabbage and about a tablespoon of water. Turn down the burner and put a lid on it. When the cabbage is nearly cooked put a package of cream cheese on top, put a lid on and give it a few minutes for the cream cheese to completely soften. Stir in the cream cheese. Then add milk and butter. Season with salt and pepper. I used to make this soup in my restaurant which was part of my health food store. It was always a hit and sold out. I can't tell you the exact amounts because I am a serendipitous cook.

Many thanks for that recipe! I love anything with cream cheese. I often joke that I would eat rocks if they had cream cheese on them. I make my own cream cheese by First, turning half a gallon of milk into 2 quarts of yogurt, and then taking 2 cups of that and draining it in a cheesecloth for a day, adding salt and then pressing it for two days. So much more economical than buying yogurt and cream cheese.

This video was the inspiration I needed to get started prepping meals for the future. After seeing your suggestion on how to make Instant Pot pasta sauce from fresh tomatoes, I literally got up, paused the video, and got to work processing the tomatoes I had picked in the morning. It has been extremely hot here in Texas and the one good thing about that is that I have a bumper crop of tomatoes this year. I was able to make enough pasta sauce for several meals. I had previously used your ice cube hack for freezing fresh basil in olive oil so I threw in a few cubes into the Instant Pot. Having this delicious sauce in my freezer is going to be so helpful the upcoming months. I always look forward to your videos and learn so much from you and Paul. My suggestion is to buy some seeds online now that are reduced, so that next year you have seeds for the garden. I’ve gone through a lot as the slugs have eaten 2-4 lots so have had to sow them over again lol. So I’m restocking, and adding in various different varieties to try next year that channels have successfully grown well and suggested to try and atm some of the company’s here have reduced there prices from £4.99 to£0.89 so a lot of savings per pack. Im ordering mine tomorrow. We have been cooking and freezing some of the apples from the tree, as we had a late summer start, only the last 4weeks and that’s made the tree and fruits ready earlier then September. And we had lots of rain so big cooking apples and rhubarb. Lots of nice things, not everything but 1/3 is doing good lol. Wish it was more like 1/2 but we don’t say no to something positive. Most of the things on your list im doing here in the uk, some are not applicable. But that’s ok.

Great video again. Nice sauce! I make a similar one with cherry tomatoes from my garden but just use a regular sauce pan! Will be canning roasted red peppers and my own Passata sauce by beginning of September. Will also make some onion jam condiment which I use when I serve a charcuterie board. I make and freeze pesto and dry herbs that I grow and also finely cut my chives and parsley and freeze it. . I freeze the parsley stems to use when I make broth. Same with the leafy celery I grow. I will also freeze local blueberries, and sliced leeks and I have already roasted my own garden’s eggplant and zucchini and froze it to use in lasagna in the winter. October is when I can pick up lots of butternut squash and use it throughout the winter to make soup. We often get bad weather in our long winter where I live and it’s always prudent to have stuff on hand so you don’t need to go out. Also like u I stock up on loss leaders especially toilet paper, aluminum roll, parchment paper, toiletries and laundry or dish soap! I hate paying full price for those items! Thx for mentioning keeping some cash on hand I always tell the younger members of my family to do this. Last year the ice storm we had made it so that there was no electrical power for days in some areas so people could not pay with cards etc. cash was king then! Enjoy your weekend. A la prossima.

Living in Hawai'i there is not much to specially prepare for the upcoming winter months 🙂 We still have a bit of hurricane season left over (until November), but the prediction for us this year is 0-1. And so far we are still at 0. The winter months will be a little bit cooler, also depending on where one lives. But an extra sweater, blanket and socks usually are sufficient. We live in a condo, but are allowed two plants at the front door. It says nowhere that they are supposed to be decorative plants so I have two container papaya trees. We ate our third papayas from those trees this morning and there are about 18 more 🙂 Thank you for always providing good and sound advice on how one can save money and often enjoy one selves at the same time as well as being good to the environment.

I was so blessed today. I was at a local farm market and was talking to the owner/farmer as they were sorting tomatoes. They filled a box with some slightly blemishes ones and I asked what they were doing. He said, people wont buy them so mostly they end up in the garbage. I said don't throw them away, I'll buy them at a discount. I paid $5 for 20 lbs or tomatoes. We kept talking about how wasteful the world is nowadays and he asked if I would be able to use anything else that would otherwise go to waste and I asked what he meant. I offered to pay for things at a reduced price and he said no way! You are keeping it out of a landfill and putting it to use. So NOW we have a deal. Anytime he has boxes of produce fulled that he would otherwise have to throw out because too many customers are too picky, he calls me and I am going to pick it up. Not only can I use some of it to preserve for my family and friends, but I'm going to be able to share with others that can do the same thing! Sitting here cleaning tomatoes as I watch your videos, and feeling very grateful and blessed!

My son made an observation that really hit me. He said, "Mom, I did not realize how much cash you use." Well, think about this. He is speaking from a normalcy bias - i.e. debit cards will be universally accepted. I put cash into "envelopes" that I use and when that amount is exhausted, I don't spend any more on that item. BUT... if the electricity fails, the usual vendors will likely accept my $20.00 bill. Something to consider....

I love these tips as they are so encouraging Now I'm in my second year in my new home. I've spent most of August changing up things and decluttering. Understanding how my home works as an empty nest is really helping make changes. Even down to planning the food I wish to grow next spring. I've just started my squirrel cupboard update. Awesome video as always! I like to stock up on Elderberry supplements to ward off illnesses. Also, tissues, Badger Balm Chest Rub, hand lotion, and anything comforting for when someone feels icky. To piggy back on that, when the grocery store has low sodium broths in the carton on sale, it's great to stock up on those for a quick and comforting bowl of soup with some pastina or rice.

Check with your insurance company/agent. We have been with our insurance company for decades and we had a grandfathered discount for those 55 and older. It saved us a good amount of money on our homeowners and auto policies. Insurance rates are absolutely outrageous right now, even if you have never put in a claim! It’s good practice to call and ask for any possible discount you might be entitled to. You never know!

Making pesto! Have lots of basil growing. I freeze it up in small containers. Usually have enough till the basil is ready next year and enough to share with my daughter. Have blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries in the freezer. Will be making scalloped apples in the crockpot, soon. it will go in the freezer, too.

Question of the day answer: I'm going to get my potatoes canned (hopefully most of them canned today), sprout and dry einkorn berries, and continue to tiday and inventory my pantry (it's a bedroom). Maybe I'll get more done, but those are the minimum. 😊

I just froze a bunch of yellow potatoes for myself and mother in-law last week. I love to dehydrate but I got some different veggies that I need to use up so I was thinking of powdering them up and incorporating them in some kind of sauce to can.

Hi, Emmy and Paul! This week we will be getting a fuel delivery to fill our propane tank for the winter and beat the fall rush. Off season is so much more affordable! Also continuing to harvest and preserve produce as long as I can into the autumn.
