It's important that guys like Nolf, and other elite wrestlers, share their experiences and struggles with things like this. Accepting that it is normal to struggle and normal to fail is part of acquiring discipline and having the will-power to overcome and succeed.

Senior year of high school, we had a snow day the last competition before thanksgiving (7 days before thanksgiving.) Most of our guys were really good about coming in for "optional" practice, but our 160 lb was out of town to visit family until Saturday. He shows up, 18 pounds over, 3 days before a tournament, with tiger stripes shaved into his eyebrows. Our mascot was a bird. I will never forget that practice.

I remember being 15 over before conference back in 2013. Had like 48 hours to lose 15lbs and my god was it fucking miserable. I dont even remember what happened at the actual tournament

I had a TERRIBLE coach my Freshmen year of HS. I remember we had State Qualifiers from '45 up. We were always a good team in the upper weights. That year we also had a couple place winners in the lower weights, we'd just won a team state title. I come out of Football at 180. I'm 14(didn't turn 15 until the next June) so I've got some baby fat, but not a lot. I qualify for 155 or something. Well, he wants me to qualify for '45 or '52. So I re-certify, he tells the trainer to be a little more generous and I have NO CLUE how my piss was hydrated enough(pretty sure he just poured water into it because the guy testing was our strength and conditioning coach and he didn't care, he'd been a coach the year before). So I try it again after I'm down to ~165 or so and it comes back at 144.8 with parental permission. I'm 6'1, I wrestled 145 in 6th grade. I was a big kid(sadly to this day I'm 6'1 or in my mind, I'd be playing in the NFL. But I ask again, "what weight do you want me at." He says, "well, 145, then you can wrestle any weight," meaning I can move up. I had to cut to re-certify, I already hate life. But the first time he wants me down to '45 is 5 days after Christmas. I came back at 166 and the room was cold as shit because we were on break and they didn't leave the heat up very high. NOT super 32, but the Cheesehead, a good Tournament, a lot of Nationally ranked kids. I made it down to 147 and my Dad of all people starts telling me how stupid this is, bitching. But I said I'd be there. I get down, but it takes the bus ride there wearing plastics(illegal) and just wrapped up with an electric heater on me. We get there...our '40 pounder who'd taken a 4th the year before doesn't make it, our '52 who'd taken a 2nd the year before doesn't make it, our '60 was out...so now I weigh in at '45 and I'm wrestling '52 as a Freshmen vs 3 of the top 7 ranked kids in the Country including a kid from Apple Valley who was #1. Worst f'ing tournament of my life. The AV kid...I don't even know if he was that good. He kept trying cement mixers(Gator rolls, whatever). He did get one on my for 5, I stopped the other 2 which...there was no reason to go for. Didn't come close to an offensive TD and was dizzy and gassed in the 3rd. Came back, took 4th(got beat up by some small school Wisconsin kid in the tournament also). Told the coach I'm not going '45 again. I'll wrestle off the '52 if I have to, but I'd quit by the end of the year doing that shit. We went from 0 state champs that year to the next year we had a great coach come in and had 6 of them and I wrestled 60/70/82 the last 3 years, loved Wrestling and had much more success.
