Broke my femur on the reef at a 12. Foot day at Spreks on N shore Maui. A tough day where 2 waves came together and slammed me into the outer reef. The swim through the inner break was absolute torture. Big kudos to those Maui lifeguards who got me off the beach and to the hospital for emergency surgery. I’m back in the water again after a year of PT, whew!

@@nathanmartinez2630 🤙 I do stay out of the water in October, when all the great whites congregate in my area. It took being knocked in the air by one in October 1999 while surf kayaking in front of our beach house to motivate me to study them in a deep dive. October is just not worth it once I learned the sheer number that predate near Ano Nuevo Island, my local area. Even though the chance of being attacked twice seems pretty low. I like to go out alone and if so do get spooked, I paddle in because I trust my intuition, although I don’t dwell on such things on purpose. Be well my friend, catch every wave and crank those turns!

I shattered my femur falling off a roof onto a marble walkway. I could at least lay there and get comfortable. I cant imagine trying to swim, deal with breaking waves, have someone lift me (hurts as bad as the break itself) thengetme on a stretcher. Wow, that mustve hurt.
@TheNaturalust Жыл бұрын
@@davewielhouwer11 Yeah I was screaming my head off once I crawled up the beach. At one point I remember apologizing for my foul mouth to 3 or 4 Maui lifeguards who were standing there waiting for reinforcements. They gave me permission to scream away. They were all white as a ghost from seeing the end of that big bone poking through my wetsuit. I was told the wetsuit actually helped keep me alive., I’m good as new now but yeah it was a nightmare of pain until they knocked me full out at the hospital. (I guess they were less tolerant of my screaming like a sailor in that august establishment. 😂 ). Even the drugs on the way didn’t have much effect. Whew! I hate hospitals and tried to break out of the place a couple times, the first time falling flat on my face. They eventually labeled me a non conforming patient a stuck a 300 pound wahine on a couch next to my bed with the singular task of keeping me there. She did and we became great friends. Go figure.

I was kinda surprised that Tony explained "backside" the way he did. Pretty simple. If you naturally have your right foot forward on a surfboard, you are considered "goofy foot", meaning you will face the wave going left and will have your back to the wave (backside) when going right. I always had my right foot forward skateboarding and later surfing, so I was considered "goofy foot". If your naturally have your left foot forward, you are considered "regular foot."
