I’ve been realizing how much breathing and the type of breathing affects everything in your life! Just focus on your breathing when you’re scared, angry, anxious etc. I’ve noticed that sometimes I would literally be taking short breaths and that would create an uncomfortable feeling in my body as soon as I started taking deep breathes, that feeling was gone. Meditate people! It will change your life.

I did 2 hrs a day of pranayama (breathing) for one month. Learned these very old exercises to expand lung capacity and engage pelvic floor. All that flat stomach vanity breathing is what what was messing me up. After about 4 days didn't want my coffee, sugar or my vices, healthy intenstines, sleeping better,. Everything started to change. And now I'm covid lasy, not breathing, back on my vices.... But 100% agree with what this guy is saying. Getting more oxygen into our cells is life changing both physically and mentally.

awesome vid. let me just clarify that in freediving we don NOT teach hyperventilation as a preparation for the dive. In fact, we do the opposite. We teach RELAXATION, get the student as calm as possible to have to best possible experience under water. Hyperventilation was used in the early days of freedivingn, but not anymore. thanks

Some years ago my Chinese Tai Chi instructor and I attended a Still Point Meditation seminar in my town. It involved a rapid connected breath. I had done it several times myself and would often fall into the "still point". There would be no breath for several minutes. You were not holding your breath but were completely relaxed. There were about 20 people at the seminar. Most achieved some level of the still point. My instructor kept lying there. Everybody was leaving but he was still there. He kept looking at his watch. He knew he was not breathing and wondered how long this would go on. He did not breath for 30 minutes.

If you research the science and biology behind this its actually quite fascinating. Its also part of a lot of other activities like yoga, meditation etc. Amazing part was with breath you change your chemical composition in your body and activate different parts of your brain and nervous system (parasympathetic on exhalation) . This is actually backed by some serious research.

Actually the feeling of light headedness comes from a form of O2 deprevation at a cellular level because CO2 has a function in O2 absorption, hyperventilating scrubs most of the CO2... (patrick mckeown oxygen advantage) but it's still beneficial to do breathwork, both for performance and emotional healing.

11:29 It's Nauli Kriya. All the kriyas are cleansing practices, this is one is for the visceral organs, but there are other for the nose(sinus) and eyes, for example. You can practice Uddiyana Bandha - it literally means 'flying upwards' - and any other of the bandhas first to get used to it. Pranayama means 'the breath of life' and so it refers to the breathing exercises. Great clip as always, thanks Joe.

As far as i've heard from survival experts, the reason you get breath shock when jumping into ice cold water isn't to make you jump back out. It's to make you go unconscious as fast as possible. This way you won't drown, and it puts your body in a state to weather the lack of oxygen without suffering brain damage. Apparently, it's part of the reason people can fall through the ice go for an extended period before being revived without suffering any permanent brain damage.

yes that is a tibetan method. Only the Lamas (people who go under meditation retreat for a minimum of 3 years) demonstrate this. They demonstrate this to the public when they come out of meditation every three years. They wrap a white clothing( bed sheet blanket whatever) and by the time they reach the monastery in a line from the retreat centre early morning 5 am in the cold. The cloth is completely dry. They do this in tibetan monasteries all over Tibet, maybe nepal and Sikkim as well

This algorithms is crazy. The last couple of days Before I going to bed I’ve been thinking about how my nostrils may be clogged up. Because when I breathe I feel like I’m not supplying enough air through my tubes. & thought about doing Win Hof’s breathing method. Then today BEFORE going to bed, this video pops up. Nothing said, just freaking THOUGHTS. WTF!

I do breath holding after workouts. As soon as I finish my run I breathe out completely through my nose and then hold my breath for as many steps as I can. I take a break of about 30 seconds to a minute then hold my breath again. I keep repeating until I can hold my breath comfortably (on empty lungs) for about 25 - 30 steps. It has made a huge difference in my cardio and also my recovery is much more rapid. Read 'The Oxygen Advantage' to understand why.

Sadly, I overdid it with the wim Hoff breathing and ended up deaf in my left ear and 4 years of intrusive tinnitus, based on the hearing loss... I did too many free dives in one 3 hour session, and went to deep, too often with the ability to hold my breath for over 6 mins and 4 mins at 30meters deep... I became interested in freediving when I discovered wim Hoff, and indirectly, it lead to my injury.

I've read books on different breathing techniques from Tibet and India. A lot of the techniques leave me feeling a bit strange after. The only thing I've done that helps is 5.5-6 breaths a minute. So basically 5 seconds in 5 seconds out. Belly breaths. Helps with a lot of things, especially stress and sometimes even inflammatory issues I have.

Seems like a great guy, and has some interesting and valid points, but a lot of unsubstantiated or contradictory claims in throughout: 1 - Unless you have a serious cervical injury and associated phrenic nerve injury (C3-C5 or above C3) *you-re using your Diaphragm* . It really annoys me how people come out with these absolute claims. You might be using it MORE or LESS, but you're ALWAYS, involuntarily using your diaphragm. Unless you're in a hospital bed and hooked up to mechanical ventilation. 2 - If you're mainly using accessory breathing, you're still moving your ribs (less so, in general, ofc) and you're probably a sufferer of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), mostly with chronic emphysema (the "pink puffers"). Normally (no disease) you can use it a bit more when compared to diaphragmatic breath., but not more, overall. 3 - having six pack abs has a lot to do with body fat% and not directly to the ability to contract and relax the abdominal muscles (rectus, tranversus, oblique, etc) or having a high % of local muscle hypertrophy. Also, having a strong core SHOULD be emphasized. That means more strength and ability to control, contract and relax abdominal muscles, which will help with more diaphragmatic breathing. Altough I definitely agree that it should *not* be a gold standard for fitness and overall health and well being. He's on point on that. 4 - hyperventilating and associated respiratory alkalosis is a thing and can harm you, even if temporarily. Feeling lightheaded because "you're having more oxygen" doesn't mean it's inherently good at all times. Oxygen CAN be harmful. Oxydative stress ages you. Which is why it's probably not safe to take an oxygen tank and sip on it for 10 minutes. I'm extremely interested in breathing and breathing exercises and the wim hof method definitely perks up my curiosity, but it's still very understudied, if you're going to make absolute claims that go against the grain.

This is similar or an offshoot or a watered down version to what we call Pranayama, the proper way practiced by Ancient Rishis/Yogis thousands of years back , it's best to learn from the source itself. The goal of Pranayama, which means to suspend the breath, is the practice of Kumbhaka or retention that's the essence breath retention it unties the granthis along the spine enabling kundalini to flow freely and slows down most metabolic processes especially the heart rate, which is how Yogis are able to live such long healthy lives.
