Today it's a fun little video going over why I think the costumes from the 1990 TMNT film are great examples of timeless costumes...
Enjoy!

This movie is more visually captivating than most movies I see today. The grit of New York, the blood bruises and sweat on the turtles, the regal gleam of shredders helmet and the matted fir of Splinter are so tactile, I’ll never get tired of watching this movie. Incredible video Chris!

I think this movie is one of the most underrated action flicks of all time. Everyone agrees it's the best turtle movie and praise the practical effect, but people tend to forget it's just a straight up great movie.

@tiggerdyret it is. It has heart. Splinter as an example, talking to Danny. He gives so much insight with little dialog.

Same, the 2nd movie while it is one of my favorites really dropped the ball hard in terms of the costumes, and the 3rd movie isn't much better, in fact you could definitely argue they have the cheapest looking costumes

Excellent Raph & Splinter impressions! Alot of the younger crowd wont completely understand because they grew up with too many variants of TMNT..but if you could rewind to that timeframe, it started with the comic (most kids never read), the toys came out, (yeah, they came before the show) then the cartoon followed...(basically a 30 minute advertisement to sell toys....and they were GENIUSES!) As a lil kid, TMNT cartoons/toys became the epitome of my existence!.THIS was literally the very first movie my parents took me to see in a theater...(probably because of my obsession) ...and sure, it was NOTHING like i had expected...in fact, it was very dark in comparison..and kind of a big bummer let-down where i think my childhood took its first real gut-punch of reality....but it was also very 'Real'....Jim Henson took everyones attention away from pizza-eating weapon wealding tutles, towards 'thinking about your family'...it STILL gives me chills knowing how the Shredder used "family' as a tactic ...taking in runaways to do his bidding....that part ALONE speaks volumes!. The Henson Creature shop did the absolute BEST rendition of the turtles, which saddens me to say, we will never see this calibur and finesse ever again (....unless someone with a MAJOR fandom bloodstream was so inspired that they went to film school to eventually become a director)...THIS movie is the best variant of TMNT that will ever exist...Thank you for this video!

I worked in a cinema in the 90s and actually got to wear one of the movie suits that was sent out to promote the film. We had 2 turtle costumes, 2 clan suits and a Shredder. The turtle suits was hot and heavy and we managed an hour in them.

Id LOVE to see a TMNT reboot or sequel with these kinds of costumes/practical effects again by Henson's studio. Im sure they could make suits that werent as difficult as they were back in the 80s/90s.

It is legitimately one of the best, if not the best comic book movie of all time. If you consider the budget, the technology involved, and the craftiness of the production to pull this off with a great story is really amazing.

While studying my BA in Special Effects a couple years ago I did a three hour talk on Creature Suits. I covered the Turtle suits but could not find any of the behind the scenes footage you used here. Bloody fantastic as I've always loved these suits and Jim Henson's work. Loved the video Chris, bloody brilliant. The wear and tear on the suits is understandable considering how much movement they were expected to do. The Predator suits from 1987 was no different, even more modern suits like Mr Wink from HellBoy two had to have repair work done on set multiple times. It's just a testament to the artistry and skill of the creature team and the performers in the suits... Won't reiterate the nightmare that the '87 RoboCop suit , but it was a damn good year for creature suits.

Hell yeah when I was a little kid I had my father help me make a sai for Raphael. He was and still is my favorite. We made it out of a curtain rod which had a decorative handle and I remember having a nail for the tip and coat hanger wire for the parts that stuck out of the sai on the sides. 💯💯💯👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 You have some awesome impersonations too. I think we all did splinter at some point 🤔😂 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐀

Great video. It's funny I saw the first film when it came out in 1990. I was 10, having come from the cartoon this was the new standard. The second film, changing april, lightening everything up, new Donnie voice didn't play well with me, even at 11 (the time the second one came out). I didn't hate it, but it wasn't the same. Still to this day I watch the first film once a year or so and find new ways to appreciate it. The dark tone really gave me something to look up towards vs something that played at my 10 year old level.

Cool video! One thing I noticed about the belts (mainly Leonardo and Donatello's) is that while Raphael and Michelangelo's belts go around the waist, it seems like theirs go around the upper chest. By TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze, that was fixed.

I saw this movie when I was fifteen at the movie theater. The first turtle comic book that I had read was from a flea market, and it was issue ten... three years earlier? You show that cover in this video. At the same flea market I bought a Space Beaver #1. That comic never got popular, but Derick Robertson went on to create The Boys, which seems to be doing great. Great concise and to the point video. Have a great cracker of a holiday Chris. P.S. You and Adam Savage really got me into customs, and making. I'm pushing 50 years old, but it's never to late to start. I will try and send you pictures of my 2012 TMNT Nic repaints... bloodied and battle-damaged. I love those toys and designs.) Joel

The Jim Henson Company have always been renowned for pushing the envelope of puppetry. A generational company where even employee's children have taken up the occupations of their parents. They could always look at a story and bring creatures to life 🙂Please look into the Netflix show The Dark Chrystal: Age of Resistance. Watching the behind the scenes doco and seeing parents work with their adult children, the way they combined Practical effects with CGI and kept much of the original intent of the the film was brilliant.

They really need to release the deleted scenes from TMNT 1, especially the scene of Mikey at the farm house. Where he is no longer the clown, he's angry, blames himself for Splitters "death" he doesn't come inside, spends all day and night training and finally loses it and destroys the barn before breaking down in tears. The scene was shot but cut, which is why April doesn't draw his picture. Also the end of the scene, where Mikey picks himself up and crawls onto the roof yelling Splinter was given to Raph. Even though you can clearly see the nunchucks on the belt.

The main charm from the film were the fact they were in those Henson suits. They need to do that again and give it a solid straight forward plot like the John Wick films did when it first came out. CGI has gotten really good but regardless of who does it, it wont have the organic nature this movie has in spades. I mean they can always add sone cgi again, like the Wick movies bc you would be shocked at the CGI in that movie that you 100% wouldn't guess bc it's in the background not at the forefront.
