In part 2 I start reassembling my MR2 that had a timing belt failure. Question is will it start after I put it back together? ;)

I may have to do this on my 4agze AW11 87 swapped MR2. Luckily I don't have AC compressor or the top timing belt cover installed. I replaced a bunch of parts (Faulty TPS and O2 sensor) Tested the ignition system with new plugs, cap, wires, rotor, coil and fuel system with new pump, cleaned injectors, new fuel filter, etc. Timing seems to be going wacky when I rev the car randomly. I'm thinking the keyway wore the timing gear but I won't know for sure until someone helps me watch the timing marks while someone revs the car up and down to see if the timing jumps around like I expect. Aftermarket Crank pulley on my car to spin the supercharger for higher than stock boost requires the timing to be checked from underneath rather than above hence the need for a 2nd person. May go back to stock pulley for troubleshooting sake and I"m getting a 3sgte installed next spring anyway. Also replaced coolant temp sensor and treid another good known ECU. Car pops and bangs when I reved it a bit without looking at the timing while E1 and T were shorted.

Great to see the guide as mine is next on the fix list. Non-interference is a blessing and potentially losing it is the downside of fitting higher lift and duration cams. For anyone interested in non-factory parts, Summit racing have Anchor brand pattern parts for the lower engine mounts. The rubber portion had the same voids and stop detailing as my '87 NA with the addition of a thin central core. They are as quiet as the factory ones and the additional material looks like an improvement. Read their description as the summary page mislabeled the rear automatic mount as a manual.

Thanks Stephen! I will look into those.

My lower mounts didn't have any cracks or chunks missing. But the engine would wind up so much that it would bunny hop on launch and the 3&5 gear change points could move forward on decell enough to miss a shift. A practical test is to full accelerate then engine brake in 1st gear with your arm on the center console and a finger grip on the gear lever. If it moves backward then forward more than 5mm then you would benefit from fresh mounts.

A DIY fix to worn out Factory motor mounts is filling them in with 3M window weld (P/N 08609) to make them solid. I learned this from Honda racers back when I had Acura's and Honda's. Recently did this for my Nissan Frontier driveshaft carrier bushing when installed a suspension lift and was getting some shuttering in lower speed higher load situations. Filled all the voids from middle out on both sides, making the whole thing pretty much solid. No more shuddering taking off from a stop and rides smooth. This is what doing the 3M Windoweld filling in looks like on a set of early '90 Honda Civic mounts (those were actually brand new OEM mounts, not tired originals - because wanted less movement): photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-PLL9f94/0/582fa7d8/O/i-PLL9f94.jpg I just bought a Mk1b ('89) but won't have it for a bit as it still needs to be shipped to me. I will be filling in the factory mounts with 3M Windoweld. For the $20 it costs, you get better than factory new mounts, with much better control of motor from flopping/shifting around... Here's the 3M page on it (its a urethane adhesive which dries like hard rubber): www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/3M-Windo-Weld-Super-Fast-Urethane/?N=5002385+3293087020&rt=rud

Do you have the part numbers for things you replaced? I need to do this exact same thing. My 88 mk1 did the same thing

Awesome video :) You did a great job showing everything. Praise the Toyota gods for making this engine non-interference. How many miles do you have on your mr2 now?

Rust is the big thing with these cars. If it has a clean body with minimal rust, then for $1k you can't go wrong.

@@DIYDanCars turns out that it needs a little bit of body work ( I live in PR so rust isn't bad at all) but it hasn't been used for awhile he said. I'm looking for a daily but honestly I don't know it kinda scares me that it hasn't been used for awhile

Nice work but how did you get the broken bolt out of the engine?
@DIYDanCars

I used a pick tool to manual turn the broken bolt until it was far enough out that I could get some pliers on it to remove it completely.

Hi Chuck, I'm just now seeing your post. Sorry! Yes! I would definitely do a belt service on your car before it breaks. It's definitely not fun being stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow.

Everytime I put my belt on the cam and I adjust it with the tensioner, the left cam moves 2 tooths toward the left side. I have no idea why.
