Man I love the DP-20, that was one of my main ships in EAW for my Rebel fleets. Cheap, fast in both speed and production, reliable, low tech level, and very very powerful. I absolutely love this little sledgehammer! Never will I underestimate this missile gunship. So many torrents of missiles! Every Rebel EAW GC I play will always feature that little pocket capital ship destroyer in every fleet! It's just that badass!

I don't understand why fighters are so dangerous to everything in SW but you see few fast moving Corvette/frigates that can pack a wallop. The Maurder and Raider II look awesome but my new favorite ship in SW is Luthens ship from Andor. Everything from the aesthetics to it's hidden weapons. What were those spikes he shot. Can't just be random debrie... I mean it blasted the tractor beam no issue, and if it was just some random debrie then that ship is by far the worse designed ship I've seen in a while. @Diana Pennepacker Starfighters were dangerous because of their use of proton torpedoes and concussion missile systems. For the rebels anyways. The empire contributed to this by not having any real point defence and relying too heavily on cheap and mass number of fighters. By the time the rebels acquired X-wings, their starfighter corps tended to out perform ties and devastate imperial ships. From the perspective of world building in Legends and even disney canon (not much world building from disney), this is important for the rebels that did not have a lot of ships that could go toe to toe with ISDs, so fighters and bombers that could hurt imp ships made a lot of sense. Plus it's cool.

Empire at War is true to the ship in cannon. In a fleet with 20 slots, I usually had 4-6 slots filled with 2-3 Corellian gunships. They were fast and versatile enough that I could pack together a fleet of 8-10 of them just for hit-and-run raids.

In Awakening of the Rebellion DP-20s also have missile launchers in addition to Turbolasers and Laser Cannons, making them a great all rounder screening/hunter ship for your fleet. I always have no fewer than 4 of these in any of my fleets.

One variant of this was the "Illusion" series of gunships. The Illusion series were unique in that they had sensor jamming systems built in, allowing them to act as stealth type ships. Their system allowed them to confuse the sensors of other ships, either acting as if they weren't there, or projecting the image (or illusion, hence the name) of a much larger ship. If memory serves, only a handful of those ships were ever built though.

Kuat had three main competitors: Rendili Stardrive, Corellian Engineering Corporation and the Mon Calamari. They all did more-or-less coexist though, since each focused down on a specific niche and dabbled in the others. Rendili did starfighters and medium warships. CEC did cargo ships and small warships. KDY did large starships. The MCs did large civilian ships, like cruise liners and deep space exploration ships.

I remember this ship in the game Rebellionatuen based 4xer from back in the day. One of the first good ships you get good for starfighter defense like a Lancer just faster and more maneuverable. Grouped with a few Assault frigates and a Mon Cal Star Cruiser or a couple of Carriers and you got a pretty capable strike group.

When I would get bored I would go back and play empire at war a lot. And one of the things I did a few times was basically do the Galaxy conquest mode and try to use the most absurd or weakest vehicles and troops to win. I played as the rebels one time around and the only thing I used were cr90 Corvettes and the dp20 corvettes. I wouldn't even use starships or bombers. A whole swarm of those things could easily take down a couple star destroyers.

I love these kind of fast gunships that are hard for capital ships to hit, but are big enough to have proper shields and weapons. The Millennium Falcon with a crew of 4 civilians can easily destroy several squadrons of tie fighters, imagine that, without any of the wasted space of being a freighter, and a crew of trained gunners.

So on the general note of design, I loved that is SWD20 you could design your own ship to take advantage of just the numbers game. Remember building three ships, two smallish ships just loaded with fire linked battery fired cannons or ion guns for the speed and hit and run abilities, then a larger ship that was a shield tank and point defense as a rebel cell of ship engineers.

I built these things a lot in Empire at War. One time an enemy fleet centered on what I thought from the pre-battle screen was a Victory attacked a planet I was using as a shipyard. As such the planet had a bunch of recently built Corellian gunships that hadn't yet been transferred to my forward fleet. I had a brief reaction of alarm when what was actually an Imperial-class Stat Destroyer cruised out of the fog of war, but mass concussion missile fire ripped it apart one weapon system at a time and the ISD went down in about 30 seconds.

hey Eck, when concussion missiles are fired during a space battle do they have the same visual characteristics as standard laser fire? is there a reason we don't see volleys of missiles being launched at capital ships in "on screen" SW media? To my knowledge, other than turbo and canon lasers we've only really seen Luke's proton launch, Wedge + Lando in RoTJ, bombs from Y wings and Tie bombers. So many ships list their arsenal as having missile tubes but we don' see them in action. Any insight on this? Cheers mate, keep it up

'Almost no storage space' means the DP-20 will need a tender ship to stay supplied or stay in a friendly system. A fleet fights every now and then, but it constantly needs food fuel and replacement parts. If damaged the ship will need to RTB because the damage control teams won't have the parts on hand for anything but minor repairs.

I served in the U.S. Navy aboard a Frigate. Just to clarify, a Corvette (like the CR90) cannot be larger than a Frigate (such as how the DP20 is classfiied). The ship classes are based on Tonnage and Armaments. It would be more appropriate to say that the DP20 is just another kind of Corvette that is more combat oriented vs the CR90 which is designed with dual-purpose, civilian applications in mind.

3:18 This actually seems like the type of ship that Thrawn would have held in high esteem/regard. Small size, for a warship, but capable of dealing and withstanding heavy damage. Five or six of these could potentially take out a Star Destroyer - they have enough fast rotating turbo-lasers to deal with any kind of fighter escorts - after that (or at the same time), focus fire on the shield generators and engines, from the rear of the ship. The Star Destroyers have no real defence against massed fire from the stern of the ship, at the engines. The Malevolence (Clone Wars) had the same weakness - so much heavy fire capacity forward and broadside - nothing to the stern against pursuing ships - even though that was proved to be an obvious design flaw.

my Respect for the DP-20 Gunship grew tremendously when my Roleplaying character came into possession of two of them. They can hold their own against any fighter, and many smaller cap ships, and outrun anything they can't fight. EaW kinda made them underwhelming, IMO

I know I have to take it with a grain of salt since that was a video game, but the Gunship really served me well in the games I played. Generally, I know it was a gameplay balance thing, but while Imperial designs were more powerful, they were also more inefficient. For the resources you put in for it, the rebel designs were always better. The MonCals were generally better than ISDs. The only exception is the TIE Defender. Figures Thrawn was involved in designing that.

3:50 I always got the impression Starwars space battles are trying to capture the feel of WW2 naval battles. In that regard it's even funnier how many shipboard weapons in Starwars reley soley on local manual controll. Given that centralised firedirection using firing sollutions calculated by firecontroll computers to remote-controll AA emplacements throughout the ship was allready a thing in WW2. I'm guessing the desire to give the characters more agency was an important factor - aka: "noone wants to read a story about computers waging war" - but I wonder if a lack of knowlege in that field didn't also play a role.

STARWARS REBELION: drop a 2 or 3 of those on an Imperial controlled world, arriving 1 "day" before a 2 or 3 carriers show up with a loadout of Y-wings. Gunships retreat to a back corner, imperial Ties flyout ahead of any capital ships. Ties get eliminated and Gunships retreat from battle. Carriers show up on the next turn and retreat to a corner while the Y-wings neutralize the capital ships... except Lancers, Stay the hell away from Lancers. Easy wins usually and early game play research that can reduce the orbital footprint of the EMPIRE.

Between the power cores, power cables, tibana gas cells, and concussion missile ammo racks this thing has very little crew space. Probably closer to modern navies or even submarines.

Fun point, the design would work from aesthetics, turret layout instantly also in Star Citizens and everyone who is not a Star Wars geek would never recognize it. ^^

Were rebel fleets too interdependent? Each ship had a specific role and they worked well with each other, but knock a few of those specific ships away and the fleet crumbles. Was the empire better at fleet operations because their ships could handle a variety of roles? Each star destroyer had a host of ground troops and star fighters, along side their turbo lasers, even the smaller victory class seemingly could handle several roles in a fleet operation. Their frigates were modular and the only really dedicated ship were the gravity well ships like the interdictor....thoughts?

I feel like for its size, the damage output is really high. It makes an ISD seem undergunned by comparison. A massive mile long battleship should be so heavily armed that everything just melts before it. Are there any naval vessels that have a similar role to the DP20 historically? It needs capital ship sized guns, or the ability to take on a battleship. I feel like there’s a massive limitation in the size of the reactors on the DP20 given that the reactors of the ISD are hundreds of meters across
