Traveling on a bike as opposed to a car is like the difference between watching a movie and actually being in the movie.

I spent 10 weeks riding those roads . worked day jobs north of sandpoint . . It was 1982 before senior year . Over 10,000 miles in the tour , ending at Jersey shore . No cc, no cell. Maps on tank bag .

Coincidentally I played guitar in a metal band in Toronto in the 90's called CAULDRON. We were absolutely terrible, but I still fulfilled my main mission, which was to meet girls. Still married to "the one", 33 years later.

Damn, Tristan. This video hit on a personal level on three fronts. First, during World War II, all of the able-bodied men went off to war, leaving the Forest Service short-handed when it came to lookouts and firefighters. While still in high school in Chicago, my dad went to Montana and spent a summer on top of Sex Peak (yes, it really is named that) south of Trout Creek, MT as a replacement lookout/firefighter. The lookout was more a log cabin type structure, and he said it was a two-day horseback ride to get up there, so he was pretty much on his own. In 1993, I drove from our home in Chicago to Alaska, and I was able to drive to the top of Sex Peak in about an hour on a Forest Service road. The cabin had been replaced by another structure that could be rented out just like the one you stopped at. The second part of your video that hit home was the visit to Libby. My mom worked as a secretary for Zonolite, the company that produced the vermiculite and processed it in Chicago. On one of their vacations before I was born, they actually took a trip to Libby to see the mine. Decades later, doctors found asbestos in my mom's lungs and she died of mesothelioma. Lastly, just by coincidence, my mom worked as an administrative assistant at Evergreen Park High School in the 1970s, which was the same high school that Ted Kaczynski attended in the 1950s. Cue the "Twilight Zone" theme...

Love that this time and terrain is making you “grin ear-to-ear!” It has been a really fun change of pace and makes me want to visit the northwest even more! Such a sad tale from the mining town! Totally agree that it is truly evil that they knew of the dangers and sent workers in without regard for their safety and health. I hope that there was some justice served. Excited for Canada in next week’s video!

Back in 85 when I rode a scooter a pickup truck literally just passed me, then turned right in a fast food place. I had to lay it down, using my legs to kick the side of the truck so I wouldn’t go under it. He dragged my scooter under the truck through the parking lot with out realizing he even did it. Glad I was wearing my helmet.

The town and valley of Yaak has became well known to a lot of people due to the writings of Rick Bass, a prolific author (both fiction and non-fiction) and environmental activist. He and his family have lived there in a cabin for the last 40 years or so, and he has written several books about his life there, including one of my favorite books, The Book of Yaak. It was fun to see you visit that area, especially since I've read so much about it in Bass's writings.

I love traveling "light" on my motorcycle, just rambling here and there with no real destination. I usually stay overnight with friends, relatives, motels, and sometimes good Samaritan strangers I meet along the way. But being on a bike and flying low over curving mountain highways is what is the most fun about it. The smells of the forest pines in the air, the scenery is eye candy, and the sound of bike pipes is music to my ears.
