In real life, Rollo was not a sibling of Ragnar. There is some debate whether Ragnar existed or whether his legend was the product of combining stories of several Viking heroes of the 900’s. Rollo was indisputably a real person, born in the 900’s but not during Ragnar’s time. Rollo as a character was so fascinating and successful, the creators of the Vikings series must have found him irresistible, thus choosing to incorporate Rollo into their story and tying him to his future rule of Normandy.
@EvelynEdwards7 ай бұрын
Yep!
@jturtle5318Ай бұрын
The people identified as Ragnar's children were born in the late 8th century, so he was born long before Rollo's day, when the Viking era began with the raid on Lundisfarne. The TV series was fun but historically a mess, including inventing Lagertha out of thin air because they wanted a shield maiden.
@jturtle5318Ай бұрын
Ragnar's father is reputedly Sigurd "Ring" Randvarsson, the Hring (Duke) of Russia, as genuine a person as Ivar "The Boneless", who may have suffered a similar nickname misinterpretation to Æthelred "The Unready".

Search You Tube for the story of Harold Hardrada. Now there's a fascinating life! Ranging from attack on the coastline of Denmark aged 15, to his Ulfhednar warriors (Wolf embodiment in battle type beserkers) that followed him throughout his life, his travels through Russia to Constantinople, the Holy Land, protection of a Queen in the Middle East, Roman activity in Eastern Europe where he fought as a mercenary for Rome, eventual return to fight a Norseman King and eventual activities in England where he finally died. Harald Hardrada was the quintessential Viking warrior. One of the most formidable in Viking history.

Was William the Conqueror his direct descendant?
@michaeldeierhoi40967 ай бұрын
This is excerpt from article I found in seconds explaining the connection between the two. "William (c. AD 1027-1087) was the son of Robert I of Normandy and great-great-great-grandson of the Viking chieftain Rollo who, by way of an attack on France in AD 911, and subsequent peace negotiations, became Duke of Northern France".

@@michaeldeierhoi4096 At the time of William it was already more than 3 centuries since the Normans were no longer "Normans" but French through mergers between populations, unions through family marriages, speak French, have French surnames, and William the Conqueror is a suzerain of the king of France. William's army for the conquest of England was made up of Franco-Norman barons and especially French knights. Only the English speak of Normans, when in fact they are French from Normandy
