This show! It was the measure of each week day and is now the nostalgic measure of lifetimes. It’s sadly missed. The era of Johnny Carson was a better time in many ways, certainly a simpler time. Every old show I find brings me right back.

I saw that program in 1969 when Tiny Tim and Miss Vickie got married! I’ve watched The Tonight Show since 1966. I was broken hearted when Johnny went off the air. All of these years later, no one has measured up to him.

In two decades on air by 1982, Johnny went from hosting 5 nights a week down to 3 nights a week by 1982. He increased his vacation time to 15 weeks a year. He gained ownership of the show. And was paid in today's money a whopping $25 million a year salary. What a 20 years that was for him at NBC!
@meijer782 жыл бұрын
I think he was doing 4 nights a week until 1987. I remember it would be a Best of Carson episode on Monday, Jay Leno would guest host on Tuesday, then Carson would do Wednesday through Friday until he retired in 1992.

@@meijer78 No Adrian, I have read that it was Jay Leno as a guest host on Mondays, as from 1971 onward Carson never hosted on Mondays (unless really needed), Best of Carson on a Tuesday, and so Wednesday through Friday was his regular shows.

Mr. Carson was working FOUR nights (60 minutes versus 90) per week with fifteen weeks off. He gained ownership of his tapes and the time slot following "The Tonight Show." In 1987, he would return to working three nights per week.

The show is eight months younger than me. We had a family room in our basement, next to my bedroom (the wall of which was just two sheets of paneling held up by metal poles, this meant that there was a hole about 3/4 inch or more in between the 2 panels). By the time I was 5 or 6 years old I was peeking through the hole almost every night while my watched the show. I developed an understanding and appreciation of adult humor probably sooner than was appropriate.

That bad had some of the best musicians in the coutry...Clark Terry comes to mind. Wall street estimated the Tonight show made more profit than NBCs entire prime time lineup. At it's peek the audience was 17000000 people for a TV show that started at 11:30 PM. At the time the population of New York state was about the same. I doubt the TV execs were displeased with Carson as the host.
