Thank you so much for the video! I watched it 2 times. I watched it for the first time a month ago and I didn't fully understand, but after I practiced and understood more about chord progressions in the past month I watched it again, now everything makes perfect sense! And it's exactly what I needed at this stage of learning. Thank you~~

Yes!!! That’s how it goes. Good work :)
@GourlieRecords3 жыл бұрын
Great tips! I usually never sit down with the intent to learn another song, but something I like doing to practice playing in a certain key is messing with chord progressions and see if I stumble across a familiar tune. Then I try to construct the various parts. Great way to not only practice the chords in a key but also a great way to uncover some unique progressions and deconstruct transitions to B sections, which a lot of producers seem to ignore when duplicating the same 8 bar loops.

Thank you for amazing series, when I heard that vi IV I progression ( Am F C ) you played, I immediately heard Sam Smith - Stay with me, then I googled that song progression and turned out to be right progression and right key. Such an amazing feeling :D

Really looking forward to your rhythm video! On the suggestion for the final video (though I hope you continue dropping little theory videos here and there!), I'd love to hear your thoughts on how to manage building out the different layers (as in melody, harmony, bass etc.) and how much the latter layers should be driven by what's already laid down. I tend to stick with harmony first which gives me a nice guide for some strong notes to use in the melody, but I think I'm possibly constraining myself a bit too much by doing so. Anyway, long rambly comment aside, keep up the great work. Thoroughly enjoying the series!

That’s a good suggestion!! Traditionally it’d be called ‘orchestration’ but I’ll need to find a better term for it in this modern context

The Functional Ear Training app is really good, learned to hear major intervals in like 2 days after years of failing. It will play a note and then the resolution to the root and somehow it really helps it stick.

wow this was increidble taetro, and for the ear training resource THANK YOU! So I know we’ve discussed major keys throughout the series, but i’m assuming the principles of what we’re talking about in general, applies to minor keys (whwwhww) as well? but ofc with it’s own set of patterns, common progressions, different set of roman numerals, etc, but the ideas r the same?
@lukatavernier2712 жыл бұрын
The trick of referring to well known melodies (e.g. Star Wars, Jaws, ...) really IS working. Do you have some of those melodies for the other intervals ? I feel like I'm lost without such a reference point...

How are you able to jump from one chord to another without progressing up all the chords in the scale? How can you learn where a chord at the end of the scale is when you are at the start?

heh.. the first minor second interval (c-c#) you played gave me jaws vibes, the second minor interval (f-f#) gave me more of new world symphony vibes due to the keys actually being closer to those two specific works, but eh, music nerd here, not really sure why i'm watching these videos, other than finding them entertaining and finding you super relaxing and enjoyable to watch
@shelbycatalano46862 жыл бұрын
This was so great, thank you! I'll hear songs and go "That's the exact same tune/notes as X song!" but I hadn't transferred that into chord progressions or the fundamentals about scales. It's definitely a muscle to flex as mine is largely unpolished but I'm optimistic with my already okay ear it'll get honed.

Another fantastic video on theory :D, love the vibes and the series. Really looking forward the rhythm video! I have a suggestion maybe Im asking this poorly, but it would be cool that last video could be about layering music ideas (I know many melodies happening at the same time) the call and response and all that with other instruments and stuff in the track.

Another great video that puts music theory more clearly out there ! The song I like to reference to for the octave interval is Funkytown - that bass line going C-C then up to the fifth G-G, and walks down to the 1st by octaves, very fun and everyone knows it (shrek 2 song haha)

Wow. You are awesome for taking the time to both create these videos and openly share your take on music theory with us. Thank you! As an Auditory / Kinesthetic learner, may I make one gentle request? It would help my kind a great deal if you ever felt so inclined as to lower the decibel levels on your instrumental track (that is, “duck” it below your vocal track). As it right now, both levels compete (in my personal experience) and makes it harder to assimilate what you are teaching. Since my audio loving brain wants to focus the pretty music while fighting itself because it also wishes to learn the lesson being imparted by your words. Lowering the soundtrack volume would tremendously help us in focusing on your lesson even more. Hoping you receive this with the immense level gratitude intended in it! Thanks again for creating these videos. We truly appreciate you!!!
