Have you ever tried a stiff brush? We use them at work all the time for cleaning and preventative conservation and they work really well and get heaps of material off, cleans all the details and is soft enough not to scratch. They're literally just a hog-hair paintbrush cut low till it gets stiff enough. You do need to be careful with rust/corroded areas because even if it isnt active rust they'll break it up. They can also scratch softer woods if you press too hard.

This is a great suggestion and I will definitely be trying this.

Hey NIck! I was just in the last few days inspired to look into ancient coins as gifts for my adult children. I very quickly came to the decision that they should get encrusted coins to clean for themselves and of course then needed to find out how they should go about that. Imagine my surprise when a familiar face from down the Corridor popped up with the best coin cleaning videos I have found - and then the next day posts the perfect video to help me understand the tools we'll need (because of course I now want to have a go myself too). How did I not know you were doing this? Y'all need to cross-promote more. :-)

Regarding the use of wax for preserving the coin: why not heat the coin and apply the wax? It will penetrate deep into the coin's pores and provide even better protection. Nice videos!

Thx for the info. I have watched yours videos more then once. When will you do another restoration video? I bought 16 uncleaned coins for 17 euro today I hope I get some nice ones.

Maybe a silly question but, how are the inserts sharpened again after becoming dull? I imagine a regular pencil sharpener wouldnt be appropriate

I use a sharp exacto blade

Brilliant thank you! I like to polish low value, current issue US medals. They have that awful anti-corrosion layer that give them a fake antique look. If you use normal polishing compounds you can easily remove that layer and get a beautiful, reflective shine. What worries me is future corrosion, but I'm going to give that Renaissance wax a try.

Does restoring ancient coins make them worth more money? Especially if done correctly, and if the coin is otherwise un recognizable?

Are you familiar with ancient coins like he's talking about? They are completely encrusted with dirt so that if you don't clean them they are just round blobs. Their only value prior to cleaning is as coins that can be cleaned.
@caracallaavg2 ай бұрын
Doesn't apply to ancients, especially the base metal ones
